  • A 60.16-pound Manhattan Cup record striper leads us off this week with a quick wrap-up of this legendary catch and release striper tournament out of Liberty Landing Marina in Jersey City. Clearly, it's hard to believe that it's already June 13th and just one week out from the first official day of summer and the final day of spring sea bass. As jumbo bass begin to slide east (4:25) the first cobia report is in as those bunker schools are bringing tight other predators. Sand eels are prevalent now as well (6:57) which could jumpstart the yellowfin season, but certainly offers some fine jigging options in these waning days of black sea bass with a closer look on Open Boat. A deeper dive (13:25) into this week's digital edition of The Fisherman as we get all tangled up in blues, while looking ahead at upcoming tuna tournaments at the Jersey Shore. Drum on the move (16:10) and beachfront options for the summer surf with a look at the weekend weather forecast for fluking with dad. A sweetwater update (19:10) with the Pocono Outdoors Guy, a Father's Day remembrance of sorts (21:50), a Dream Boat Fishing Challenge update (23:00) and the return of South Jersey sheepshead (24:15) heading into the summer of '24.

Is it me or the spring striper fishing from shore in the northeast ended quick and was weak?

It seems to have ended here in Wildwood south jersey. I only managed a couple of schoolies.

Bunker boats massacred the bunker this spring.

I thought Northern KIngfish were the same as Whiting. What's the difference?

What WE refer to locally as WHITING are also known as SILVER HAKE. What we commonly call LING are also known as RED HAKE or SQUIRREL HAKE. This is the NORTHERN KINGFISH www.thefisherman.com/article/inshore-specie-profile-the-northern-kingfish/

Rarely has there ever been a pre-spawn bass measuring 47” that is over 50lbs and never has there been one 60lbs. I wasn’t in said contest but it seems necessary to point out it’s actually impossible for that fish to be 60lbs 🤷🏼‍♂️

Personally, I don't think this fish dropped her eggs, but the length X girth X girth / 800 formula tabbed this fish in a catch and release tournament at 60.16 pounds. To the best of my knowledge, the fish wasn't hung on a scale for a weight. -JH

@@thefishermanmagazine I applaud the anglers for not hanging that fish from a scale- I think we can all agree there’s no need to harm the fish in that way. But using a calculation method (Wood’s equation) developed for tarpon seems like a poor way to determine an accurate weight on a striped bass in a contest. Again I have no skin in the game but having witnessed multiple 60lb fish landed on commercial vessels I have never seen one short of 52” and that one had two big (~18”) Tog in its stomach when it was gutted.
Again I applaud the anglers for good handling practices and I hope I don’t come across as being rude with my statements, as my only hope is to create a productive dialogue on the subject.

Every over-slot striped bass shown in this week's report WAS released Walter. For the Manhattan Cup tournament, anglers get a quick length and girth measurement before release to determine a tournament weight (length X girth X girth / 800). Again, over-slot stripers were released. -JH
