Yoko Kanno is one of the best Japanese composers out there, every animation project she takes part in improves impressively. Macross Plus, Ghost in the Shell, Terror in Resonance (which seems a big inspiration for Kevin Penkin), Arjuna, Escaflowne the movie, ... I can't name enough soundtracks composed by her that made those series well known. She also works with so many talented singers. She did work on another jazz soundtrack, Kids on the Slope.

Cowboy bebop was a surprise hit for an anime at the time of it's release. Most anime of the time drew their source material from manga (serial comics). Cowboy bebop the anime was created before the manga came out. Usually companies tend to do an anime adaptation of a manga to draw attention to the manga to boost sales. That's why many never make it past a season or 2. They are produced to draw the watcher to finish the story by buying the books. Anywho just some neat information for you.

Ms. Kanno is considered one of the big name composers in the anime sphere, especially when she was very active in 90s and 00s. Something I want to tell you about the anime creator, Shinichirō Watanabe, is the music always comes first. After that he builds the show around the music. So cowboy bebob is built around Jazz/Blues in a Space Western feel. His other shows are the same like Samurai Champloo is built around hip-hop. One of my favorite shows that he worked on is called "Kids on the Slope". That show is incredible just because of how much work the animators did to have people playing the music to be as accurate as they could. Small correction on a small comment you made, but the buzzing from the double bass comes from the way the player plays his pizzicato. There aren't frets for the string to rub against so the player is pulling the strings at an angle rather than parallel to the fingerboard, so that they are actually vibrating against the wood of the fingerboard. It's a technique really only possible on a double bass (and cello to an extent) which is super cool in jazz/swing music

IMO one of the main reasons Cowboy Bebop is one bonafide anime classic is the absolute BANGING soundtrack made by Yoko Kanno. There's just no weak track in it and they all match the theme and feel of every episode so nicely and seamlessly that you can't resist being pulled into this whole universe for the entire ride. It's from an observer standpoint for the most part. You get this same effect with Japanese country music - there are stylistic pulls, and a lot of interesting stuff happens there, but only in the fringes of these communities do you get experimentation along the same lines as back in the US, and very often they don't really get why things are done the way they are. For the most part, they just do their own thing and pull together their own meaning. Same thing with Japanese tabletop games and especially Japanese cyberpunk, the former morphing into Sword World, Dragon Quest, and that breed of fantasy that has next to nothing to do with old Tolkien, and the latter having little to do with the anti-japanese xenophobic protectionism that inspired cyberpunk as a genre in the first place (hence why all the evil forces are Japanese CEOs and their domestic enablers).
The reason why they're interesting is because they're one of few places in the world that has been wealthy for enough time to have their own arts industry flourish for decades, while also not having its entire creative process be Western. It's a different take, sort of like how The Witcher can be interesting for what it doesn't do similar to the rest of fantasy gaming. Most other places in the world have been too poor to support artists.

It follows Kaoru Nishimi, an introverted high school student and classically-trained pianist, who discovers an abiding love for Jazz through his friendship with his classmate Sentarō Kawabuchi, a devil-may-care delinquent and talented drummer. Set in the summer of 1966, it's a collaboration by the same creative team behind Cowboy Bebop - Shinichirō Watanabe directing, and Yoko Kanno composing. Get on it.

Seatbelts is a Japanese band led by composer and instrumentalist Yoko Kanno. Cowboy bebop is an anime from the 90's. I own all the albums for this series, there's 7 albums (cowboy bebop, vitamineless, no disk, blue, future blues, ask dna and cowgirl ed). They take music from all over the world and puts it in songs. There's middle east, french, japan, america.... all sung in their own language. Also all kinds of types of music. There's even a sweet metal track. This band is why i love jazz. Their song Adieu off of the 4th cowboy bebop album Blues means the world to me. There's two songs that share the same medley which space lion and good night Julia (that song i've heard probably 100,000 times). This music is closer to me then stuff on your main channel. THERE ARE SO MANY SONGS I KNOW YOU'D LOVE! Space Lion is a master piece. waltz to zizi is super chil. Fantaisie Sign is a french upbeat edm type song. Cats On Mars is a wacky japanese songs. The Egg and You is kinda charle brown vibes. WHAT PLANET IS THIS is a mover and a shaker. Odd ones is just jammin jazz. I could literally write pages about all of this.... i was here

So fun fact: Cowboy Bebop was practically made for its music, as opposed to the music being made for it, which makes it close to unique among all forms of media for which music is composed. It has more in common with music videos than most media in that regard.
In most media, the music is one of the last things production is done on, and it's made to fit everything else. Cowboy Bebop took nearly the opposite approach: production on the music was started while the characters and plot were still in the conceptual phase of development, before there was any idea of what the final show would be like. Other than the very broad genres of "jazz and soul" Yoko Kanno was pretty much given free rein to produce a whole bunch of music with minimal guidelines.
Production of the music finished before anything else, and several scenes were produced in such a way as to fit select pieces of already written music (e.g., pacing and tempo of dialogue and/or animation). Famously, there was one particular track which either the producer or director (can't remember which) liked and wanted to use so much that an entire episode was rewritten just to fit that piece better.
There's a good reason Cowboy Bebop is pretty much universally considered to have the best soundtrack in anime history, and one of the best in global television history period.
Oh, and in case you didn't know, Yoko Kanno is such a big deal in Japan that she was selected to compose the main theme for the enthronement celebration of Japan's current emperor in 2019.

Yoko Kanno is a legend in the Anime community for her great soudtracks, Cowboy bebop is considered to be one of the best animes of all time and it's opening is considered one of the best openings in all of anime, you can see why :D Kanno also worked on the soundtrack of the anime series Ghost in the Shell: Stand Alone Complex, you may have heard of the Ghost in the Shell franchise, it was one of the inspirations for the Matrix and it had a live action movie adaptation with Scarlet Johansson a few years back but that was just one addition to a franchise that has been going on since 1990 (and not a very good addition in my opinion but whatever). I hope the less savory members of the anime community don't dampen your enjoyment of these awesome songs... but if they do Hey you still have the gaming community XD May I shamelessly plug in the soundtrack to one of my favorite games ever Hollow Knight? It's a little indie game made by three people, the composer's name is Christopher Larkin, I recommend the tracks called Hornet, Mantis Lords (it's a insect themed game) or Sealed Vessel, I think any of these is a good representation of Larkin's abilities but I honestly love the whole soundtrack.

You really looked like you were just LOVING this lol. This is one of the most recognizable songs in all of anime and beyond, straight up ICONIC and awesome song

The Seatbelts are fantastic! Great to see your thoughts on them. Led and composed by Yoko Kanno, and the alto sax soloist in this is Masato Honda.
I'd absolutely recommend The Real Folk Blues or Rush for other Seatbelts songs to look at

Other people have said it, but The Real Folk Blues from Cowboy Bebop is something you HAVE to listen to, even if you don't make a video. TANK! is the opening theme, The Real Folk Blues is the ending theme. I literally started watching this show because I liked the themes -- I accidentally came across it when it was going off on Cartoon Network and The Real Folk Blues just absolutely grabbed my brain, so I decided to watch the next episode, and then TANK! blew my ears off, and I was hooked (probably helped I was a senior marching and jazz band trumpet nerd in high school at the time). Thank you for the video! We were all waiting for your reaction to that damned sax at the end, and it is *so wonderful* to watch someone else's joy at hearing something for the first time.

I thoroughly enjoy your facial expressions listening and jamming to the music. The way your eyes dart from one point to another, its as if you're jumping from instrument to instrument. Love this reaction video.
