- In 1932, Helen Keller wrote, "I am tempted to think that the perplexed businessman might discover a possible solution [to] his troubles if he would just spend a few days in his wife's kitchen. Let us see what would happen if he did."

"Mr Jones made 10 cakes"
*shows 9 cakes*
Ugh I was like ''maybe this is a little mistake of animation'' then '' but there is 9 left'' shows 8 cakes 😂
Ugh That was bothering my OCD the whole time while I was watching the video.
Maybe he dropped one...
He burned the first one
One for his side chick lol
This video has very little to do with feminism. It is about the cons of capitalism being played out in an easily understandable small scale setting.
Yeah but if she had switched genders in the story, you would written an even longer piece about womens duties of raising kids, house work, etc
P Martin if, but they didn’t.
And no, it wouldn’t be about that. This is a point Hellen Keller made about capitalism. It wasn’t very much about feminism at all.
Magari, the “invisible hand” isn’t perfect. Sorry Adam Smith. Sometimes too much of a product is made and consumers have zero demand, but when there are big corporations, they can use advertising to make you buy something you neither truly want nor need.
But cakes can last a month in the icebox and even if he made extra he could sell them to the neighborhood or give them to the poor to help out. This makes zero sense.
Magari Adam Smith is the inventor of capitalism, he argued that the “invisible hand” (supply and demand) would make sure that everyone could get what they needed preventing corporation control over commodities. But there are other factors besides supply and demand.
Actually, this is a pretty good metaphor about how consumerism pressures people to consume things they do not need, or in many cases even want, just because we can produce it.
The fact that it was an essay written (well, dictated) by blind and deaf from birth Helen Keller is actually incredible.
oh now I get it, thanks for pointing it out! I always forget to read the video description. I though this was a bit condescending to men like the 50s videos were to women. This videos is going to get a lot of dislikes from men that like me didn't read the video description. I think the joke will go over many people's heads....and even if it doesn't it still won't be funny for them. Just like some women don't find Dave Chappels jokes about women funny.
hiashame: That is a shame because this is not male bashing at all. It is a very shrewd economic analysis.
*not born blind and deaf* but good non the less
alde: well, yes, although the two are closely related. And Helen Keller was a Socialist, of some kind.
Interesting essay for 1930s set to a cartoon.
Vicky Mc lol XD
Seems more like a transport problem. In 1932, lots of Ukrainians would have loved any access to those cakes .
Vicky Mc looks like cuphead and bendy and mickey mouse cartoon
Jessie Thomas so any rubberhose animation is automatically "bendy cuphead!"?
graphic organizer I mean, the games were very popular, it’s just something to relate them to. There’s no problem with finding a “blank-esc” style unless it is completely different from said style. Personally I do see it relating to cuphead since the entirety of the game is that style, but with bendy it’s only small bits and pieces. That’s just my personal thoughts on it.
Hope that helps a bit!
As a feminist I need to point out the obvious. This is a cartoon illustrating the flaws of capitalism writting by Helen Keller in the 1930s. It comes across as sexist, because it was written in the 1930s. This video is not about feminism, at least at the time the idea of "getting men into the kitchen" was in fact a feminist ideal of showing men that "womens work" should be respected and learned from. Just look at the classic I love Lucy episode where her and her husband switch roles. It's riddled with sexism by today's standards but was highly feminist by theirs. Anyway learn more about Helen Keller before calling this economic piece "sexist".
i have an unrelated question but, ive seen alot of videos where feminists put men below themselves and go as far as to say that all men are rapists. Have you ever met another feminist who says or believes in that?
ps. im not assuming anything about you
DJ.HoneyRat I know this wasn’t directed towards me but I am also a feminist and yes, we run into those people from time to time.
I hate when everyone thinks all feminists are 3rd wave feminists. Some people are not calling them self a feminist anymore as well just because of the stupid people...! :/
The line “who run the world? Girls.” Still annoys me. Technically we run the world because we give birth but it makes it sound like girls are above guys. I don’t think girls are below guys though; I think they are on even ground.
I wish masculinity wasn’t such a prison for guys and femininity wasn’t such a standard for girls.
thank for you your answer. this really helped me understand the subject, i did not know alot because im still young. You made a lot easier to under stand and i thank you for that.
It shows that they way people think about production must change not the system in which we sell it. Capitalism works, simple as rhat,
I love I Love Lucy lmao that's a good show
To all who were triggered know that this was an excerpt from a book Helen Keller wrote so times were different and so was feminism
Unlike (practically all) others, I believe the points made here are well argued. Many of us men in the corporate world really need to up our game.
R Garlin: yeah, I was abrasive at first because of the title but the points make sense. I think they’re going for rage watch views, which isn’t very conductive if you’re trying to share an idea.
RetroSupport93: Says the coward hiding behind a made-up name...
RetroSupporter93: Ha ha! Sorry to say, but that IS my real name 😄 - you can blame my mom.
(not many "Bubba"s in NYC, like I guess you're used to)🤔
Well, the old-fashioned ones do; some Asian-Americans do, and so do some deep-Southerners - maybe not regularly, but Biblical names are popular. I know several Solomons, Isaiahs, Aarons, Abrahams,....I even know one girl called Hephziba! 🤪
R Garlin I don’t really agree
Damn, this new Cuphead Run n Gun stage trailer is lit!
I legit thought this was something about cuphead, that's why I clicked it lol
Same lmfao
VEGA 😂😂😂Same
Bongo Bongo stop
Its a 1930s kind animation not cuphead
You make 10 cakes. Sell 9 cakes and make a profit. Duh.
Episode Interactive he's got neighbors or he could give them to the poor. I do that all the time when I make to much food.
ParadiseofDarkness... Did you actually read what Episode said?
Basically... It's a metaphore for the market.
wow so many people it went right over their head what the point of it was.
@@Alexa-be4sk so, only the manufacturers are to blame? and what about the consumers who support it with money? It's funny that in another service sector: onlyfans, prostitution - only the consumer is to blame.
@@iznogoud8780 tbh my guy this was 2 years ago and I don't even remember watching this video lmao
lmao i thought he was going to sell the cakes
like damn if you can make 10 cakes in a day all on your own, open a bakery!
at 0:28 i realized shes vacuuming the tile haha
“Our grandmothers did all the hard work”
Meanwhile our grandfathers: dying in the most brutal ways on the frontlines in Europe.
ummm
True
Our grandparents did hard work* I fixed it.
They did 99.999999999999999999999999999999999999% of the hard work.
9. There are nine cakes on that table. I had to rewind 4 times to count 9 cakes.
My grandmother was actually a hardworking business woman back in the Philippines. Both her and her husband held successful jobs and became decently wealthy for the likes of the Philippines. I'm happy to say i'm proud of that :)
@Jacky Linn uh no she started her own business
@Jacky Linn uh you used the word leech? Also yes
@Jacky Linn my great grandparents weren’t wealths, my grandparents did it themselves
10 Cakes??? Don't you mean *9*
My father is both offices, a householder and a bussinesman
Jesus Christ guys, stop choosing to be offended. This has literally nothing to do with feminism, it's an essay written in the 1930's about capitalism. Walk it back 40 paces will you?
Learning new words! Love your vidss
Damn, people in the 1930s sure looked funny
I can agree with this one, it reaches across all groups (and isn't politicized) , keep up the good work Atlantic.
this didn't perplex me, this was thought inspiring and even more relevant to today's society than ever.
I think you might need more than a title card to show that this video is based on an essay written eighty six years ago by someone who is largely forgotten today (certainly-I’d wager-by most people on UA-cam) and which explains the outdated solutions to the outdated problems. Still it was a great effort and hugely entertaining not to say quaint. Next time try something out the gilded age since we seem to be swinging past Ms. Keller’s time period and right into the age of the robber barons. Maybe an essay by a famous muckraker like Upton Sinclair or Ida M Tarbell to encourage the muckraker of tomorrow. I’m sure you can find something in your archives.
iLike2watch lmao, Hellen Keller isn't "largely forgotten".
iLike2watch this is a late comment but I’m triggered that you said Hellen Keller is largely forgotten HOW DARE MY GOOD SIR
I'mTrash O_U it's time for her to be, have you read "The Black Stork"? We should put the focus on women with disabilities who empower and value all individuals, not just those they deem valuable.
Somehow, this feels extremely patronizing to everyone.
Well like is it not supposed to be
Like it was in the 50s
Aunty Agony 😁😂😂
Jack I know right, Jack
That's the point.
It is a writing style popular at the time... but yes, I agree- by today's standards, it feels condescending.
1932!! I’d say 1972 actually I was married to this man until 1982 when I got divorced and started my own business then I was once again working 20 hours a day..I was allowed 4-5 hours of sleep. But at least I was the boss of me not him!
How much money did you get from him? Probably 70% of his asset ?
plot twist it isn’t about feminism, but capitalism lmfao
We must organize our world and how we do things 😥 it's hurting everyone and everything.
1:58 "nine left" I count eight.
gen101394, i just realized that too 😂
Consuming less and investing the money in experiences with friends is the best and most relieving thing i ever did.
Consuming won't fill that hole people. No matter how deep or what kind of hole it is.
Cakes can go bad.
Most 'widgets' can infact be stockpiled and sold at a later date.
JABS991
Okay, but what about the factories? Since there are already so many widgets in stock pile, and certain machinery are specialized... so throw out the machinery? Shut the factory down? Well, most likely, they will continue making these widgets until the factory shuts down.
Storage space and fees aren’t cheap either..
Cakes can go bad. Just like how some widgets (i.e. phones) can get outdated.
What happens when stuff "goes bad" or gets outdated? Of course, it's still a waste of resources to make it when the "family" or targeted market gets "full/tired of it" or no longer has any demand for it. It's a nice analogy when you see the right parallels, but you still have a good point. I just felt like adding my two cents here lol
Come on just eat the *9 cakes.* I _may have_ made too many but its only *9 whole cakes.*
I'm all for feminism, but there a saying I heard a long time ago that strikes true to me. "The man may be the head of the family, but the wife is the neck. She supports the head and can turn it however she fancies. If the neck breaks though, the head is in trouble."
Independence In Mind I respect and acknowledge your opinion. ✊
Teragram38 Crows it not about feminism it about capitalism
kill star I know it's not. There's just so many comments about feminism here, I figured I could my two cents in. The only thing I know about capitalism is supply and demand.
Teragram38 Crows well ok then thanks for clearing it up there just so many comments that have not watch the video screaming sexiest
Teragram38 Crows but the neck is being controlled by sensory muscles that is found in the brain which is located to the head.
No hate.
Just Science.
Wow this is great.
II’m very into that early black and white cartoon style. Nailed the 1950s and 1940s PSA perfectly! And in my opinion the lesson was taught in a Great way!
I hope you could the grate work!
Very interesting show of that time. I'm very happy things are different today in most countries
Oh wow this is actually pretty ahead of its time
Wtf. I live alone and don’t spend any time really cleaning because I don’t make a mess in the first place. People buy so much stuff.
Helen Keller out here with the Tea
i love that this video was animated and drawn in the rubber hose art style
Why didn't he just sell the cakes to his neighbors? 😅
She should spend a day at his job and show how she would handle industrial economic.
woooosh
It funny, I just got back from reading the entire article. I like how this video picks and chooses from the few good topics in the article and leaves out the interconnecting bits that make the entire thing sound like drivel.
Very cool how an essay about the economy in the 1930's can still apply to today's economics.
Pretty nice quality
Impressive how a Woman who is blind and deaf wrote this.
I think they could have been a little more explicit in the title, because unless you look at the description or are familiar with the essay, it’s difficult to know what the video is about for almost half of it.
This is why there are so many disagreements in the comments, people are confused.
The free markets don't demand you to take more than you need, besides surpluses are good for a rainy day.
What kind of sick man would make 10 cakes in 1 day?
No rly
And now what women should think?
Put your man in the kitchen and let him bake food for an whole army?
tbh i wouldnt even make 1 i would just break apart a poptart and feed it to my family
Denis Andronic ya
Denis Andronic I wish my dad made 10 cakes in a day...
A baker would...
10 cakes was to show that we produce things more than we need and that's exactly what's goin on in our society. We dun nid 5 iphones and constantly switching between them when a new one comes out. This just shows the market produce more than we need n becuz of it we r pressure to buy it just like the family eating 3 cakes instead of 1.
I've never read that essay. But I've heard of it
my grandmother worked in the germany millitary as a general..
Supply and demand is kind of like a wavelength, the less supply, the more demand, but as the supply to meet the demand gets higher, demand gets lower, meaning that supply gets lower, meaning that demand gets higher...
wot
Exactly what I said
me too.
Wow very good.
Why are we having gender wars in 2018? Instead of men versus women we should have business operators versus home operators or better yet people can just stick to what they’re good at. If a woman is good at business strategy then she can run a business.
If a man can manage a household they have the right to do so.
Actually it is about capitalism. It is just a metaphor
This is really clean to be made in 1932...
Edit:it was the book that was made in 1932. I'm so stupid
Why didn’t he just sell them? He is a SALESMAN
Brayan Nunez ever heard of an allegory before
This needs to be given in business economics
1:58 They had 9 Cakes.
They have 8 left.
HE CAN BAKE!!! - wow
Wow this explains economics 101 in highschool better than the teachers
The guy could have sold the extra 9 cakes to his neighbors. It’s like opening to a different market nearby.
Mr Jones could've sold the 8 cakes left
Thanks for a good laugh🙏
If she pays half the rent, he should wash half the utensils... after all that's the equality they were asking for. But don't leave the job of provision to a man but still want to be helped in the kitchen yet you work and earn too.
It is more like government managing country/states as they have to up keep both end of economics IU industry and consumers rather than corporate scenario where the only motive is profit till anyone find out the impact of over production or production menthods and thus regulaised or scrutinised.
I also love the rubber hose animation
My brain hurts from listening to this...
Just make plastic plates and covers for the cakes and sell them to a bakery.
A blind and deaf girl wtote this props Helen
you make 10 cakes one time...
LOVED IT......
Dear married women, It is clear that your husband has flaws, but if he was a ‘saint’ he would not marry you in the first place
Spongebob when him and Patrick had the clam baby
Lmao I live for this anti-capitalist little gem, thank you HK. You’re sorely missed.
Nick C not by individuals with severe disabilities, read the black stork! We should put the focus on women with disabilities who empower and value all individuals, not just those they deem valuable. This comment is not at all against you, I didn't learn about her dark side until I was taking classes specifically to be a special education teacher. I'm pointing out how public schools put most of the focus on her when talking about disabilities even though she's extremely problematic and we have better role models to look up to with disabilities
Hellen was wrong about businesses producing outside of demand, maybe in the thirties but not now. Firms try hard to adjust production for demand and if the demand is not as high as supply they will adjust to attempt to meet it until equalibrium is met and if they don't the firm will fail.
This was a great essay on capitalism
Why am I laughing watching this!!😂😂lol
1:40 Lmaoooo I think the animation is kinda cute
I knew this would anger me
I'm sure this mentality will work in real life.
What could possibly go wrong?
Ι didn't get the point of the video...anyone can explain?
I hate how all these people are saying, “this is feminism” “this has every little to do with feminism” it’s not, it’s capitalism 😐
Well... cakes don’t spoil that quickly. You can eat one each day.
Or 2.
1:23 As if he would do that in the 30s, psh. Hed probably just call his wife stupid and tell her to shut up and make him dinner.
LOL hilarious on all fronts!
The industrial age promised less work and it only gave us more. What’s that mean for AI?
I can see how this thesis in the shape of this metaphor would make sense when it was created. mid great depression. but today you also ha e to realize the true span of globalization and near century of stability consumerism has had. If this metaphor was updated the husband would sell the cakes adjusting the price so he may be rid of as many as possible. those extras cakes as well are not necessarily a bad thing as storage and later consumption of goods should their ever be an inability to make new cakes. and if you counter that last point of that saying aomething along the lines of it will be outdated. I know of people who have gotten this far with nothing but a admittably outdated iPod.
Quality and actual market demand over mass production for the sake of mass production. Big companies? Take your notes.
Nice
My OCD senses are tingly
Nice music
The men use the labor saving machines to get more work done at their workplaces, increasing the economic value that they produce. The amount of work in a household is the same, with labor saving devices reducing the amount that humans have to do.
There are always one fewer cakes on the table than the number she says
Another flaw in Joan's plan is necessity and waist control. If Joans had spent the time preparing a ham or a roast, instead of ten cakes , he would have had enough food to feed his family for 2 weeks or a week depending on the size of the family. By making more cakes then needed, he not only wasted precious time but also resources. The eggs, milk, and flouer(used instead for bread) he waisted could have fed his children breakfast for weeks. He also made the terrible mistake of over indulging his market (the children ) with his product (the cakes) leaving a surplus that would cost alot of money by going to waist. The thing you learn when you're a wife and mother in training 😉💖
This isn’t what I expected, in this case that’s good,
My boyfriend asks me "what man makes 10 cakes?"
the animation tho
I mean my dad would cook when my mom couldn't..
btw people this video has nothing to do with feminism, here is a quote to make sure that is clear 4:05
she doesn't know much about economics?
she probably does the house spending and has to plan for grocery's and clothing purchases? like??
at least ... its shoiwn she has common sense..
and the cartoon makes a valid point about making the industry pay for wasting resources on things no one needs
montork that’s what they did men went to work to afford for their families. That’s why in this day in time woman can get jobs and afford for themselves. Nobody forced the man to marry her.
You can actually learn a lot when it comes to managing a household, TBH. Knowing the amount you can spend, produce goods that will benefit said household, dealing with waste, bills, other members of the household, etc. A lot of people these days have difficulty doing so, at least those who didn't put theory to practice like myself. Both my parents instilled this kind of knowledge from an early age, mainly because I'm responsible for an autistic relative when mom and dad die
Its something that gets taken for granted, but its necessary info for survival in this world . . .
DO I HEAR FALLOUT MUSIC!
This just make women look worst than they're acting right now
