Dear Eric: A fellow aquarist recently asked me if I have access to a microscope. I don't. It might be interesting to compare samples of water from failed and successful, live food cultures. Dear Kartikeyan: Since I acquired this, female Betta splendens, from my local, pet, store, I’ve closed most of my uploads showing her receive her, weekly treat of live blackworms. She has become my, most beloved pet. Sadly, I don’t believe she will live much longer. She appears to be deteriorating, with age. She was full-grown when I bought her, a few years ago. Dear Discus Keeper: I’ve looked into culturing white worms (Enchytraeus albidus) and vinegar eels (Turbatrix aceti). It seems to me that a white worm culture would be a stinking mess and a lot of trouble. A vinegar eel culture may not smell bad and could be ideal for white cloud fry (Tanichthys albonubes). But, many aquarists start white clouds on pulverized, flake food. I thought I’d try that, if I can catch the fry before the adults devour them. Thank you for the suggestion. Sincerely, Brinegar

I'm in florida and am trying to figure out what exactly to feed my angel fish. I left sand substrate in one bucket and round substrate in one bucket outside and the water is super green. Could I do something with the water to grow something ? Or just throw it awake? I'm wanting to learn about this . I think your videos need to get out there!! ❤
Dear Viewer: Infusoria (microbes, which turn water green) are too small, for angelfish fry to consume. I suggest getting Daphnia magna and culturing them, in green water. I do it inside, as I prefer to avoid culturing mosquitoes. I culture green water, outside, where it is easy for me to empty a culture (or strain it) if mosquitos invade same. The spores, of the microbes, which compose green water are in the air, everywhere. If you put decholorinated water in a vessel with enough nutrient and light, these spores will eventually land in the water. All you need to do is put some compost or dead grass in a bucket of used aquarium water, outside. Within a month, the water should turn green, with infusoria. You could leave the bucket of water outside for only a week and then bring it inside and keep a light on it, 24/7. That should culture green water, without having to worry about mosquitos. Daphnia eat infusoria, so it is best to add them, to a body of green water. They will reproduce, rapidly, if there is a lot of infusoria. You can keep daphnia alive on spirulina powder (in solution) and add a few grains of yeast (for best results) perhaps once a month.
Dear Viewer: The 10-gallon tank had a hang-on-the-back filter, which kept the water from growing stagnant. The idea was to culture phytoplankton to feed Daphnia magna. But, sedentary algae and cyanobacteria grew and the water never turned green with phytoplankton. I find it easier to culture green water, during warm months, outside. But, I recently purchased some spirulina powder, which I hope to feed daphnia when green water isn't available, along with brewer's yeast. @@ejbrinegar so you want the green water setup tank let the algae go the first time for a few weeks clean the tank treat it with bacteria to break down the algae you just wiped off everything add a high quality fish food like first bites you want to build up the decaying organic matter and you want to keep temp around 75 and do that adding a fair amount of organic material add a couple real plants by week two once you have a bunch of micro worms in the substrate stir the substrate really good run a small sponge filter and keep doing that once a week and you will have Green water for the whole winter

Dear Chad Titan: Yes, I've had difficulty getting nutrients to the phytoplankton because other types of algae exhaust the supply. Using Endler's livebearers to consume such algae is a great idea.
