I saw Rita Moreno perform Norma Desmond in Sunset Boulevard in London in the 1990s. I don't doubt she struggled with the role but I obviously saw her on a good night, she was amazing. One song sticks in my mind even now: As If We Never Said Goodbye. She sang her heart out, and when she was done every cast member on stage turned towards her and applauded. You could see by the look on her face that she couldn't have tried any harder.
I would kill to see a video of this. I read the reviews when she did it, and they were glowing...Close/Buckley level raves. That, and she's a hell of an actress. Give her a good part, and watch her run.
It seems that too many fans of "Sunset" on UA-cam expect perfectly glossy singing a la the schlock of Andrew Lloyd Webber. One might bear in mind, however, that the American- unlike the British- musicals never traditionally expected perfect singing. It's the persona and the drama and the comedy that really mattered. I imagine that Moreno was perfect for the role.

I saw her second performance and thought she was BRILLIANT! She didn't overdo it at all. And she's adorable.
