Love Klatt's framing of the changes in college football conferences and the playoff being so beneficial for Penn State. Could've just as easily said, "Now you don't have to be able to beat Michigan or Ohio State to make the playoff!"
Exactly. You could tell Joel didn’t want to step on any toes in this one and avoided the elephants in the room (Franklin’s inability to beat real contenders)

One of the more irritating things that has been spoken about in regards to the conference alignment is a lot of the media, cowherd in particular, saying man it’s going to be so good to watch Michigan go against USC. Or Texas Georgia. What’s crazy is we could’ve always had these matchups, but the conferences were too cowardly to force them to play other power five teams, there shouldn’t be allowed a cupcake game anywhere in the schedule so I will continue to say that worst case scenario should be the 64 and 64 model that Chip Kelly had recommended
That was when Michigan lost their 12 year head coach, Lloyd Carr and had Rich Rodriguez as head coach Once Jim Harbaugh showed up, Penn State not only lost, they started losing big to Michigan. So yes, the head coach matters.
How did Penn State do from 2014 -2016 against Michigan? That's right, they got blown out in every game. Michigan leads big in the series since Penn State joined the Big Ten too. Under Franklin, Penn State is a second or third tier program and that's the truth. 88-39 is nothing special, merely respectable.
@@teekay_1Genius, Franklin blew the cheating scumbag Harbough out in Happy Valley twice, and like the other gentleman who started this conversation said, Franklin won 4 out of 5 against the cheaters, fact!!!!!!
Franklin has been making excuses lately but has always been genuine in caring for his players. He stays in touch with them well after they leave Penn St. He just needs to be more accountable and better big game coach.
The damage being done by paying college students to play may well up destroying the sport. In the past, you'd forgive the kid for making a mistake because he was young, he's doing his best and he's an amateur. Now you realize he's a minor league player perhaps making more than you and me, and thus no longer immune from criticism. Same for the coach. It's no longer about molding young men into productive adults. That's secondary to winning. So before our eyes College Sports becomes professional sports and *everybody* has to be judged on wins/loses of teams and coaches if they can't win the championship coaches get dumped in favor of someone who can. It's not what I want, but the players insisted, TV money is paying the bills and so suddenly nobody can claim to be doing it for the love of the game.

Unsurprisingly the hate on PSU is insane in the comments. It’s a very tall order given Ohio state has a legit 40 million dollar payroll. However, if Franklin can do it, it’ll propel PSU into natty conversations barring injuries. Franklin needs to make the playoff this year, no doubt. If he does he meets job expectations. He can do it with another 10-2 season with a loss to OSU. Lastly, people all cite his record vs ranked opponents. 1- the ranked opponents he plays are almost always elite Michigan and Ohio state teams. And 2- show me the record vs ranked programs of YOUR school. If it isn’t OSU, Michigan (in last three years), Georgia, Alabama, LSU, OU, or Clemson since 2015 the others aren’t better or barely clear him…thus leaving Penn State around the 8-12 range of best programs over the past 8 seasons.
