That was a great idea, and works especially well for me as a disabled wood worker. Reaching up high for clamps has always been difficult. Using the upside down rack will be awesome!
Hi Mark, I never thought about that, but Yes, I think that is especially convenient. I found it also a lot easier to get my clamps. The weight is low to the ground, so you do not have to lift it that high.
Brilliant job! I liked the plywood dovetail. One sugeston could be to dye a bit the top of the plywood just to get a little more contrast...Thanks a lot for sharing
*wow* - you've got all the _quality tools_ in your shop. And that black MDF just looks *cool* . But please keep in mind, whether black or natural: MDF is MDF -> remains a carcinogenic stuff. So consider using a respirator mask, especially when sawing. New subscriber.
good thinking i thought of this a long time ago there is a saying thinking outside of the box well done hope everyone else takes this in and absorb the knowledge that you give on this channel.......also if you have a small workshop look up at the ceiling another wasted space that can be used
If you position your Upside-Down clamp stand under your "normal" clamp rack so that one clamp goes upside-down the next "normal" and so on, you save a lot more space. Besides that, great idea again!
Bravo. Très bel atelier, vous m'avez convaincu pour le système incra. Malheureusement le magasin n'en a plus de stock pour l'instant mais je ne perd pas espoir. Continuez avec vos belles réalisations.
I love your idea of a demountable plate for the Incra fence. I have one on my router table - by copying your idea I could move it to the table saw when (occasionally) necessary - very cool and a big saving! Also, I never thought you could use that Banggood dado measuring thingee with the Incra fence - genius... now I will buy one!
Excellent idea and i really like the precision in your work. When I finally get around to making a mobile clamp rack I plan to do something similar using two rails, offsetting them so one clamp can hang down, whilst the next one sits on its head. Hopefully I will get twice as many clamps on it!
Love your work. For cheap plywood, try the Incra box/finger joint templates not perfect but not as bad as the dovetail. I don't know why this is better perhaps it is something to do with the knots and voids in cheap plywood. Cheers from Australia.
Hi, I think you are right. The next time I will use finger joints. I think it gives less stress on the cheap plywood then a dovetail because of the angle. The half-blind dovetail is an improvement over the full dovetail because that really did not work. (when you use an extra board at the front and back it will work, but I want to keep it simple)
Very nice work! I really enjoy the precision and professional results you achieve. Now I need to find some black MDF here in Australia as I have not seen it before 👍😎🇦🇺
There is a supplier in Melbourne. I think the MDF is Valcromat from Portugal. Aust distributor is Himmel. Www.himmel.com.au They’ll send you a sample on request. It looks pretty good.
@@warwickhowland5816 Warwick, I know Valcromat, and that will work perfectly. But I use almost the same but without a brand and it cost half then Valcromat cost. We pay around 70-80 euro for a sheet of this Full colored MDF.
Well done Dennis! As always, excellent work! Couple things: Can you do a video with ways to do dovetail joints and mortise and tenon joints? Do you have a link or suggestion to a fence like the one you use on your router? Perhaps something similar you can recommend from Bangood?
There is no fence like the Incra on banggood. There is something, but I have to change my workbench for it, so that is not an option. Dovetails, I do with my INCRA fence, perhaps I can make a topic on that, but I do not do it with hand tools. Same counts for tenon joints. I use a Festool domino's as an alternative.
Another great video, Dennis! Hope you are safe here in The Netherlands and not afffected by covid19. Agora apenas um teste para ver se respondes em português! Obrigado!
Another advantage of this type of rack is that a portable workbench can be stored more closely to the wall while still allowing the clamps to remain in the rack. In this case, the profile of one side of the bench should fit against the profile of the rack, to make the most efficient use of space (i.e., to allow the workbench to be stored as close to the wall as possible).
Nicely done Dennis. I wonder if you couldn't also 'dovetail' your clamps and hang half of them with the head on the top and alternating ones standing in your new rack with their heads down at the bottom? It seems that would allow you to fit twice as many clamps in the same wall space.
Thanks, Den, My red clamps are from Bessey. The Bessey KRE models. Expansive, but very good. I simply love them. The Axminster trade is OK, but not that good as the Bessey clamps.
I notice when you were making the dividers for the clamps, you had the off it piece between the blade and your stop block, with no holddown. On many miter saws, that piece would kick. Is the Festool precise enough to prevent that? Great video as always. As I shrink towards retirement (😏), I am always looking for ways to distill my shops into smaller spaces.
Hi Victor, I think when the blade is stable, and the miter saw good aligned with the left and right side this will not happen. And you have to wait till the blade has stop spinning before to move it back again. But of course it is always safer to clamp it in place.
You hit the nail on the head Dennis. Clamps are very wall hungry. That’s a great idea. What part of the world are you from Dennis...if you don’t mind me asking. You sound Dutch. Am I close? Cheers.
Plain old common sense to flip the clamps upside down, but like a lot of things, an obvious solution that we’re trained not to see. Wondering if you considered a new rack that alternates the clamps with the first right side up, the next upside down, and so on to maximize the space between the bars. Might not work out to double the number of clamps in the same space, but maybe close. Just thinking ahead for when it’s time it further expand the clamp collection.
Hi Walter, Yes, I am thinking of something in that direction. But I do not want the next upside down, but that is also not necessary. You will see it, when it is ready :-) The lower gravity point is very nice. Much more natural than the heavier part of the clamp at the top. Thanks for your comment.
Hi Pat, I get a lot of questions about the black MDF. In the Netherlands this is fairly easy to obtain in the hardware stores. Here they call it fully colored MDF. Valchromat is also a fully colored MDF that is available everywhere. I think this is also very suitable, but it is much more expensive. However, this is a bit more robust, stiff and denser than the MDF I use. What I use is not Valchormat, but it looks a lot like that. What I use is cheaper and costs around 80 euros here in the Netherlands for a 240 x 120 cm sheet. I see several manufacturers worldwide who make fully colored mdf. The problem is that there is no brand name here in NL for this MDF. So I find it difficult to indicate which MDF is comparable with this worldwide. I believe in the USA this could be the same: www.forescolorusa.com
you didnt like the finished look of your cabinet take ans cut some 1/16 inch oak or walnut and trim it out. Inca makes it simple. I look forward to your posts, My problem with Banggood is having in stock items you really like... You are to good a salesman... Thank you
This is woodworking porn! Incredible workshop, tools and equipment. That workshop is close to perfection. What is the black material You are using to make the rack?
The mounting system for your Incra fence on the router table looks different to ones available in UK. Where did you get it? Also why do you use the dovetail track clamp instead of a T track version maybe with the T track machined into the bench like your dovetail?
Hi Michael, I use the dovetail track clamps because they are very versatile. I use them on more things where a T-track is not an option. But I have to say that from a design point of view, I think a T-track version would be better looking. (also a bit more expansive)
About the mounting of my Incra fence. You are right. My LS positioner is from a table saw fence. I later bought the Wonderfence, and here the LS positioner plate is different. If you have one, and you want to do this. You have to remove the thick underplate. That is good possible. If you want more info about it. Mail me at hookedonwood@hotmail.com Then I can explain it with some pictures.
Hooked on Wood You could cut the T tracks into the black MDF and use modified lightweight Irwin clamps ( there is video on a very clever and simple way to modify these for track) which are very cheap and quick to use or the Axminster guide rail clamps. I thought the dovetail clamps were quite expensive..
I have been considering picking a cordless Makita nailer and saw one at ua-cam.com/video/wZCRmI7unvo/v-deo.html Reviews that I have looked at were very critical of the tool's performance and wondered if you have any strong thoughts on the topic. Thanks for the quality content!
@@HookedonWood It would seem the main concern is the tool's ability to drive into hardwoods. Many of the reviews I have looked at talk about how nails are left proud of the surface even when using 1-1"4 nails. There were also some significant concerns around the overall balance of the tool. I would love to pick up a nailer and I am already using the Makita line; It seems my options though are this unit or wait for the next generation.
