Replace Water Inlet Valve Kenmore or Whirlpool Washer

  • Whirlpool or Kenmore washing machine water intake valve replacement. Fix washer that fills slowly.
    A water inlet valve can fail in a few ways. The water inlet valve can get stuck open and cause the washer to fill when the washer is turned off. The solenoid can fail and the valve won't open or the valve can mechanically fail and partially open or not open at all.

    Been living with no hot water for a while. Checked my hoses tonight just out of curiosity. Giant swell in the cold water supply right at the connection to the machine. Went down a rabbit hole and found your two vids on this. Ordered replacement hoses and a new inlet valve. Looks like a pretty simple job. These machines are pretty bulletproof so fixing them makes a lot of sense. I'm all in less than $25 for both hoses and the valve.. Thanks!

      You are welcome. You likely noticed that I have the companion dryer and there are some repair videos for that as well. A couple of years ago, my friend bought a new washer and dryer. As they were hauling out the old ones, the guys commented that the new washer and dryer will not last as long as the old ones. I will continue to fix these until I can no longer get parts. I will try to buy laundromat grade ones if I have to replace them.

Thanks so much for this video which you took the time to explain and went slowly unlike many other videos wheere they go so fast you have to rewind many times.

    Great video - clear and concise. Used it to replace the inlet valve on my circa 1986 Kenmore Series 70 heavy duty washer. As others have mentioned, the valve is mounted different than yours: it's mounted horizontally on top of a metal casing that the hoses lead out of but that was the only difference. Very helpful - thank you!

    Nice, it has been many years since I have needed to replace this valve. I enjoyed your tutorial.
    My set has had the the cold side burned out for a very long time and I swapped cold hose to the hot solenoid and used it with only cold water.
    Well now both solenoids have gone "open" so I am now waiting on a replacement. This Kenmore 110 is from the mid eighties. Still gets the clothes clean.

    I want to thank you so much for the clear instruction this video provided me regarding the replacement of the water inlet valve of my Kenmore washer. It is exactly like the one in your video, with the exception of the valve placement. The failure was the cold water, just as demonstrated in your video. My valve is mounted horizontally on top of a metal casing that the hoses lead out of, but the replacement is basically the same. Thank you so much for your assistance!!!!! I couldn't have done it without your help!!!!!

      You are welcome. My washer & dryer set are still working too. I refurbished the dryer a few years ago (videos about that on the channel). I just read that many major appliances are lasting around 7 years before being replaced. These were made to last and IMHO are worth repairing, especially if you can do the work yourself.

    Thank you for explaining the putty knife to open the console! All the other videos I watched said only to pop off the end caps and mine would NOT come off! Putty knife slid under the console to pop the clamps was the answer on my model (Kenmore 11016862500).

    Hi this is great video but I have a "slight" problem. On mine, there are two separate wires/connectors (white connectors in your video). I marked everything to try to make sure I hooked it up correctly. Before hook-up, I was getting water from both sides (minimal flow). Now I'm getting NO water unless the dial is set to "spin" and now the water also overflows. Could I have hooked it up wrong?

    • @Know-How-Now
      @Know-How-Now  4 роки тому +1

      Hi Dawn, sorry I didn't get back to you sooner, somehow I missed your comment. Somewhere on your machine there is likely a wiring diagram (unless the glue dried up and it fell off). Maybe on the back cover outside or inside or maybe behind the control panel. You will find the color codes for the wiring on the diagram. It does sound like you mixed up the wiring. You could also search by model number on your machine for the diagram.

      I don't recall what I paid for mine, for sure if it was super expensive I would remember. Find the model number on your washer. Go to one of the online parts sellers. Get the part number. Buy it there or often you can get the part on eBay for a very reasonable price.

      If you don't have a parts diagram (it will have a part number for your valve) that may have come with the owners manual, look for the model number on the washer. The Kenmore in the video has a metal plate under the lid. The first 3 digits of the model number may be printed on the tag and the rest of the number stamped on the tag. The washer in the video is a 110.81878110, the last 3 digits are the color. After you have the make and model number, you can try doing an internet search with make and model number.
      While you are ordering parts, you might want to check to see if the agitator is turning correctly.... though maybe you can't do that. There are "dogs" that are inside of the agitator. They have plastic teeth that wear smooth, then the agitator doesn't spin. The dogs cost around $5 for a set and are easy to replace. I have a video that shows how to do it. I have a video that shows how the agitator should turn and how to replace the "dogs". ua-cam.com/video/mvdKR4FR7jE/v-deo.html
      There are several companies that sell appliance parts. If it's a Kenmore, Whirlpool made the washer for Sears. Sears will sell you the part, though they can be a little expensive. When you get a part number for the valve for your washer, you can shop for the best price if you wish. I have found many parts on eBay at a reasonable price.

      You are welcome! Hang on to that washer, many of new ones don't work as well and have a much shorter life span. They also have a tariff (tax ultimately paid by the consumer), last time I checked the prices have increased on ave $88 for a new machine. Whirlpool just reported increased earnings. My cousin, just ditched his new washer (clothing was not getting clean) and bought an old style used one.

      @@Know-How-Now a friend recently replaced his old aging Whirlpool washer and dryer and told me that the new Samsung dryer was OK but the washer was a piece of crap... he said,, the clothes just don't get clean. He said he thinks that Samsung is more interested in saving water and electricity than getting the clothes clean... I have to admit, I was kind of surprised. I recently remodeled my entire kitchen and purchased a Samsung dishwasher. After using it for the first time, hours after it was "finished" the dishes and glasses were still wet. Can you believe it??? The dishwasher does not have a heating element to dry the dishes. Better "yearly cost" ratings I guess. It turns out that I must use "Jet Dry Finish Rinse Aid". Believe it or not it works and now the dishes are dry and I can even sense some heat once the washer is finished. I think we consumers should be allowed to buy appliances based on what WE want, but auto manufacturers don't make cars like We want, they make them to pass Governmental requirements. Oh well, I will do whatever it takes within reason to keep my old washer going :) OH, and one more thing.... thank you for not falling into the common thought of...."my video has to have energetic thumping music to keep it interesting"... You and your kind and thoughtful approach is what makes it so great!!!!

    Hi...I first noticed on the COLD setting, hardly any water was coming out and it was also making a loud "stuttering" noise. I then tried WARM and HOT and only hot water was coming out but today, on the HOT setting nothing was coming out and more loud stuttering and so now, just the WARM setting is giving me any water but there is some noise too, so it's doing all kinds of strange things. Do you think it's most probably a bad inlet valve? I don't have a multimeter. If the valve is OK but just not getting power, which part or parts would need replacing? Thanks!

    • @Know-How-Now
      @Know-How-Now  5 років тому

      Because it is "sort of working", It is highly likely it is getting power. Without a mulitmeter, you can't be 100% sure. You will have to decide if you want to buy a valve and replace it to verify it is the problem. Check on the return policy for the part before you buy it.

    • @skh1825
      @skh1825 5 років тому

      Thanks again for your help! It was a bad inlet valve. I feel silly now because I thought amazon sent me the wrong valve. The old valve had a metal bracket but the new valve did not have a bracket (that was attached anyway). There was a small bracket in the box but no instructions whatsoever. I called the local parts house thinking I did not have the right valve but the parts guy said it was the correct valve and he showed me how to install the bracket onto the valve and the washer is working great now!
