This is a regular struggle. Wow, You’re really good at explaining things. I generally follow 3 major parameters to decide if I want to edit in black n white 1) Is it a high contrast image? 2) What’s the mood I want to create? 3) Are the colours in the photo main subject? If the colours in the photo aren’t that interesting or playing a crucial role in making the photograph visually appealing, I lose them and go for monochromatic look.
Sometimes I like to go shooting with the camera already set to b&w, so that I can focus on thinking about the picture before editing (it changes the whole mindset for the shooting)
Hey dude, I just wanted to take a minute and thank you for making these UA-cam videos. I truly enjoy watching every single one of them because first of all, you are in my opinion, a great photographer; but also because they relax, entertain, motivate and educate me in a way that other videos on the platform haven't been able to do.hmmcan'twait to see how your channel grows. :)
Good points! I also tend to use black and white for photos that have textures, patterns, or an interplay between light and shadow. It just seems more pleasing to my eye :)
I still struggle with B&W. I love your B&W and other people's B&W but I hate my photos, even using B&W film. I don't know what it is. The subject and the background blend, subjects don't pop out. In color, I can notice every detail in the photo because color highlights every single object. I see colors and I can't imagine the world in B&W haha.
@@juguetesjaponeses5020 You can still highlight a subject in black and white. If the subject is wearing white, try to make the background black and vice versa. Or get your subject in the light and the background in the shadows. You can also separate the subject by using a low aperture. A more general tip is to find a background that has almost no clutter. It really helps a photo if there are no other distractions.
Quick tip to black and white photos: go to where light and shadow intersect. That normally is a good scene to shoot. And in post, try to increase the contrast of your photo, it may improve how your subject pops
Thank you Faizal, I'm exploring black & white more and more these days and this is very helpful. I really like the point about suggestion vs statement.
Timely! This is where I am right now in my photography: knowing why I choose BW or color. Thanks for putting it into words. Your examples looked good. Thank you.
Well put: my struggle usually is when I both like the composition and the colours of the image, each bringing it's own contribution to the image and each one detracting somehow from "strengthening" the final result in one direction or the other.
Hi ! ....I used to do this.... Shoot in colour RAW....Process the colour to mono, taking ages, not always successful... after a few years of doing this I decided to compliment my LUMIX GX8 with a GX9 this is permanently set to the MONO M L mode; it produces superb mono studies as high quality JPEGS... all they require might be a crop then a sharpen...this is done on my iPad Pro.....My GX8 is still set to Colour RAW... so the best of both worlds....I am so pleased that I discovered your channel ...
The photos from 9:32 onwards are absolutely stunning. Great video. I hate the feeling that I have to use B/W to make something good out of a bad picture. This video inspires me to do more intentional B/W. Thanks!
I primerily shoot in B&W for street photography. Personally I belive it tells a better story, I can get better compasition by taking away all of the colors that can be overwhelming when taking the photo. In post I'll then use film settings (XT4) to see if I prefer the original image or colored. I also belive the difference in shade and lighting in a color dominant frame can enchance the black and white image in a way that portrays a better story.
i prefer color and use it whenever possible. i usually just use black and white whenever i have a really nice image but that was shot really under or overexposed and requires a lot of editing
I found this video useful. Thanks for sharing. I generally prefer to make my images B&W unless I like the colors and want to keep them. Do you shoot B&W intentionally by setting the camera to monochrome mode?
I always don’t get it when some photographers give their audience/students advice and tutorials based on their personal choices. Like b&w isn’t the right choice for digital cameras or like when one of their followers shares their photos with them, they start criticizing because “if i were you, i would do this and that”.
Can you make a POV video of you using the x100v but only taking pics using the digital zoom modes??? I know you used the TCL but I would like to see the quality in these digital zooms and the usability of them! Maybe even attached to the TCL??
That's a very interesting approach. At first I was against BW photos, but when I want to emphasize a point there's just no better way, so I grew to appreciate black and white.
Hey I am a 12year old photographer is Brookline Massachusetts ,you inspire me so much. Thank you. I was wondering if I could photograph with you one day.
I don't think this video explained what ISO does to photos 100%. It just explained how noise works in correlation with ISO, but it goes deeper than that.
I loved your explanations and now I defenitely have a better understanding why people might choose sometimes B&W. For myself, I really only use colour photography, because often when I see B&W images I just find them pretentious and can't help but thinking "nobody would even look at that image if it were in colour". So I really don't use b&w: it feels to me as if this was an easy fix for a bad image while pretending to be an "artist". These two factors let me prefer colour: it's more natural and demands more effort to get a good result.
I will have to try using more black and white in photos, it sounds silly but I really hadn’t considered that it could make such a difference. Also that photo at 9:33 is so stunning! It made me think of MC Escher.
When u shoot colour you see how it should look like in colour. If u shoot b/w you are thinking how it's going to look. Not editing afterwards. Actually u never were taking that picture, u just feel it's looking better as b/w than colour.
How about editing the different color channels in b&w images? That could be part 2 of this video. I personally made a LUT for realistic luminance conversion from color to b&w. It's based on what human eye sees and was used back in the day to convert color tv signals to b&w. It's a great starting point rather than letting LR decide.
@@TungstenOvergaard I thinks its even harder to shoot BnW than color. I shoot film so I purusley choose to shoot BnW often. TMAX 100 with my Summicron 50mm... thats pure pr0n
I have to disagree with that statement Antonio. B&W photos have the ability to convey things in ways color photos sometimes can’t. For example, whenever I want to emphasize emotion in my portrait work, I almost always shoot it in B&W. Great video as always Faizal. You have a way to explain things without sounding like you are lecturing people. Keep up the great work. Greetings from the west coast. ✌🏽

yes! this can be so fun. I do this with Acros film simulation in my X100V

Love your style of photos
Excellent treatment of what must be a tricky subject for many street photographers. Bravo.
Very interesting video. Thanks for all the tips and so well explained. I think i can defently make an some changes at my workflow with these tips!

Faizal, thanks for your content. Yours pictures are great and Videos too. Stylish , some sort of aesthetic.
A very helpful video to deepen my understanding of color using in photography. Great one.👍🏼
The background looks great!
Hey maybe make a video on how to efficiently use your analog pack preset since I just bought it, or the essential? Just a suggestion love your work
Just discovered your channel. Good stuff. Are you based out of Chicago?
Do you zoom, prime or both ? I prefer b&w for images with shadows

In my opinion if the colors give a great perception of the photo I choose the color version!
yo can u do an unedited vs edited street photography video with the x100v

You should watch what Alan Schaller did say about shooting b/w. And about editing
I love this discussion. Did you move to ny?
On a personal level, if i have an image that i can't choose between black and white or colour then I have failed to make a good image in either.
Brilliant!👍🏻
And the red numbers
workspace tour soon?
Is not a problem when a photo looks good in color and BW - you got to create both: 2 good pictures for the price of one!
I finally learned what ISO is today, thank you, that makes so much more sense now.
I don't think this video explained what ISO does to photos 100%. It just explained how noise works in correlation with ISO, but it goes deeper than that.
Nice video and explanation. I usually make the election unconsciously but now I could think more on that

@@FaizalWestcott Yeah that would be cool.

Color. Black and White, today, is just for hiding bad photos. “Is this photo well exposed and/or interesting? No. Then let’s use black and white”
Are you serious?
