First of all, what's the thoughts about condensing 1000p & 1440p into common charts to deliver maximum information (32 different gaming tests) while also cutting down on the amount of (sometimes pointless) talking? Also, we front-ended and expanded power, temperature & frequency testing since that's becoming more important in today's environment. Do you agree? Finally, the 9600X is NOT here but that isn't intentional. Our sample had memory controller issues and we're waiting on a replacement.

It's a lot to look at and a little less easy to mentally focus on what I'm seeing in the time it's on screen for 1080p and 1440p results together... but there wasn't a huge amount to see here on this particular chip so it really works to say... not much to see here! Even with all this data! For this chip it really fits. EDIT: The more I get used to it, the more I do like you can get a lot of context in one chart, it's still a lot though! Could go for/against. It both has benefits and is a lot to read at once. Also for this CPU power/frequency is the more interesting thing than the individual gaming results (all kinda meh compared to competitors), so I totally can see putting it first, again. Interesting your 9600X had problems, Gamers Nexus' 9600X also had memory issues! For the person talking about prices, those were launch prices, he was making a point about how they're positioning these at launch, but yeah for veering into buying advice, current prices are good to mention. Wasn't shown on screen, but when talking he did compare the value against current options and said it isn't much of a compelling "upgrade" at all. EDIT: Okay, I see the tiny orange text. Checking prices and having them be accurate by the time your video goes live days later is hard or impossible, in their defense. Their actual commentary on what's good value seems on point IMO. In terms of what they said about it, regardless of the graphics/price figures shown.

Microsoft Flight Simulator and Cities Skylines 2 .They seem like very CPU dependent games to me. there were no such difficult games in your test at all.
5700X3D is best move when upgrading on AM4 to save money. The performance is almost identical to 5800X3D, just slightly lower, but at 200$ instead of 350€.
Yeah, that's the one I just got. No reason to get a 5800x3D at this point in my opinion when the 5700 is right there. Unless you want upmost performance. But atp you might as well get AM5
If those are the prices where you live, sure. Where I live the 5700X3D s between 240€ and 260€ while the 5800X3D is between 290€ to 310€ so, both are good choose.
5700X3D is by far the best bang for your buck with gaming when looking at frames per dollar. We have them in the US for $200-$210, while the 5800X3D is usually about 5% faster than the 5700X3D @1080P, they still selling for $340 in the US. The real star in most titles the 5600X3D (with a few exceptions), in titles that don't care about more than 6 cores, it often beats the 5700X3D and usually ties it or is 1-2% below, I've seen the 5600X3D selling for around $150 if you live near a Micro Center and they actually had any in stock. $150 for on average 90% the performance of a 7800X3D while being able to stay on AM4 is just nuts. We built my neighbors kid a B550/5600X3D/16GB DDR4 3600/1TB Gen4/6700XT all new but with a reused case, PSU and fans and RAM for just under $590 and it's amazing for 1080P gaming.
5800x3D completely saved me from having to upgrade my entire computer just to keep up with a high end build. That 3D cache is making a world of difference.
I currently have a 3700x, its still a great chip! But good to know that I don't have to break the bank to upgrade, the 5800x3d will be my next processor, probably in a year or so, got a rtx 3060. And I only play on my 60hz tv so, mostly at 1080p, so for now I'm good! lol.

I used to use a RX 580 4gb, but just before that I was running an I7 950 with a GTX 460 since 2010 till 2019, I did mostly photo editing so I didn't need a lot of gpu and cpu power all that time. Then I wanted to get a bit into gaming and upgraded to the RX 580 4gb, then I decided to upgrade it all in 2021. Then got a RTX 3060 in 2022. I mostly use it on my tv and I've seen high refresh rate monitors but 60hz is fine for me lol. So given I use my 4k tv at 1080p at 60hz, I'm sitting on a lot of power. I don't have high requirements lol. Tbh, remember when NFS: The Run was released and it was locked to 30fps? Everyone was losing their sh*t, I was fine with 30fps lol, I'm an outlier. heh. Get me a handheld that can do 30-60fps and I'm fine lol. Great system you got btw!
Of course better efficiency is not as exciting as higher performance. However, it is something I do appreciate when living in Europe with shit energy prices
Everyone seems disappointed in the Ryzen 9000 right now, but I agree with you. This approach is exactly what's needed. High efficiency per watt, lowering long term energy costs and usage while also delivering a slight increase or on par performance. I see this as a win for everyone who skipped out on the Ryzen 7000 launch/ upgrade cycle. I will wait to see what the R9 9950x/ 9900x results will be, but I foresee a similar scenario shaping up. I am all for it. I was going to wait for Intel Arrow Lake in the hopes they correct their efficiency/ power issues but with all the issues they've been having I will just go for the Ryzen 9000 series.
i is not directly a question of being or not exciting but rather where you as an user sits. If you are for example gaming at 4k resolution like me, the efficiency is kind of redundant since all the current cpus being it amd or intel will drop consumption considerably once they get to a stage where they are waiting for the gpu. So while if you are at 1080 going from 120 to 65 or so looks good , if you are at 4k, where a 7700 was not pulling 120 but probably between 80 and 90, the efficiency gain is considerably more limited, as there is diminishing returns and minimal operational consumption (that is around 25) so a 4k user will go from lets say 85 to around 60 watts what over a year means less 20 euros, or a monthly saving of less than 2 euros each 30 days.
@@kwamelovell9448 Yep, the industry hss been steered to the wrong direction for too long now. It is not just the energy savings you will save money on the cooling solution as well as the motherboard as high quality vrm boards are significantly more expensive usually.

Got a 7700 for efficiency, but also to adopt the new socket from the beginning. I'm very happy with my decision, hopefully they launch three or four more generations down the line - the 9700X, so far, is not worth upgrading to.
I think the 7700X is a good blend of all-core performance 8c/16t and gaming so it has a good amount of staying power. On the other hand, the 9000-series isn't being launched as a potential upgrade path for 7000-series users. Its there as an efficiency play for people who might care about power & temperatures while also offering a bit more performance than the 7000-series.
7950x3d Was my go to, had it since launch and it’s been a brilliant cpu for gaming and multi threaded workloads. I’ll be keeping my eye on the release of the 9950x3d. Also notes on your final thoughts, I don’t think CPUs need to be faster, in a lot of ways they are more than fast enough. We need efficiency and optimization. AMD can see that and I’m all for it.
At this point only idiots fail to realize that these chips are heavily limited powerwise out of the box. That's how it should be for the average buyer who does not want to go into BIOS to change settings.
This format is really good to follow, information in the graphs is clear and by continiously talking over it makes for a clearer message instead of introducing each slide with “and here we see…”. And if I want to see more, I can pause the video. Also very interesting to see the 5800x3D is still matching the next gen-non x3D parts.
This was a great video, thanks for highlighting the power efficiency and what someone from an older system like a 3700x might be considering for an upgrade, not just looking at benchmarks and making snap opinions like everyone else. Everyone seems to forget that the 9700x performing like a 7700x but only using 2/3 the power is quite good. Just wait for the 9900x which has 2x the TDP, then zen 5 will stretch its legs.
@@HardwareCanucks purchased mine for $320 launch year with a motherboard deal at microcenter. I don't even know if I should even upgrade my cpu versus my GPU at this point. Running at 4k is resource heavy but the 5800x3d and 6900xt combo is still chugging along.
@@SoriPop your mistaken. it uses the same power as the 7700x, the 65 tdp means nothing. it still pulls the 140 watts etc. these are nothing but refreshes.. it does not drop 90 watts he is full of crap. he is referring to tdp.. there is no advantage to the 7800x3d, the 7800x3d stomps it into the ground, he is reading scripts.. benchmarks tell a different story then what he is saying..

As someone who appreciates power efficiency, AMD did the right move here. Sure it doesn't move the needle for most gamers, but it is still a win for the consumer. Lower price, higher efficiency.
It's clear that AMD went the efficiency route this generation. It leaves a lot of headroom for overclocking. a poorly configured PBO can increase multithreaded performance by around 20% in some test
Lower prices and better efficiency. It's alright honestly, AMD knew obviously no one would be wowed, but it isn't all that bad. Now a decent mid range air cooler can deal with these chips easily. I'm getting myself a 5800x3D or 5700x3D anyways though, no hassle with platform changing for now. Thanks Mike, for the great video, short, sweet and very well done. Zen 5 strategy is for the datacenter and mobile. Unfortunately, it leaves the desktop in a strange place, however the 9800x3D will still wipe the floor in terms of gaming performance. By the numbers we see, you can expect up to 10% higher from the 7800x3D.
00:44: Ryzen 7 9700X offers a compelling upgrade option for Ryzen 3000 users. 02:15: 9700X shows impressive power efficiency, outperforming previous generation CPUs. 04:24: Zen 5 architecture focuses on efficiency rather than significant performance gains. 06:01: Gaming performance of 9700X is competitive but not groundbreaking against older models. 09:32: AMD's marketing emphasizes efficiency, leading to incremental improvements in performance.
Once these come down in price, as they surely will, their low cooling requirements will make them a reliable pick. The majority of users outside of high end enthusiasts won't really need anything faster than the 9700x considering GPU bottlenecks. Or just opt for the 7800x3d once those come down in price post 9800x3d launch. Looking forward to seeing the PBO results.
No regrets buying a 5800x3d in December. I didn’t even consider the AM5 platform. My GPU runs games well, doesn’t run hot and is not power hungry. Plays all my AAA games well with a 4070ti Super at 4k on my LG C1.
So I have the 5800X and thought to replace with 5800X3D, but I am liking the idea of jumping to DDR5 Ram and very hopefully, cooler CPU temps so maybe I am the target audience here since I am not so much of a "gotta be fastest" kinda person. But I wanna see the 9800X3D first.
Don’t, interest rates are not worth it. I paid 236k for a house in 2019 with a 1.8% interest rate. Todays rates it would be nearly 500k and 6-7% interest
Same here! It's STILL a great chip, I upgraded to it and an RTX 3060 from an I7 950 with a Gtx 460 from back in 2010 bout 3 years ago and I have no recent plans to upgrade. I play games on my 4k tv at 60hz at 1080p, I'm fine! lol. I think we're good for a while. P.S. You could always go tiny home! A good 50-70k and being mobile with a solar setup? If you don't mind minimizing and don't have a bunch of kids, it might be something to look into. ^_^

I wonder why only some reviewers are comparing PBO with stock for this chip. The IPC improvements from Zen 5 are there, but the mainstream narrative seems to ignore this.
The 5800X3D stole the show here, in some games its winning over the 7000 series by up to 40 fps while beating the 9700X by a few fps in a few games. Just holding its own would have been great but, the results shown here are nothing short of a amazing. AM4 had more new CPUs introduced this year than AM5 up until the 9000X flops and there is nothing here for 7000 series owners to upgrade to. So much for AM4 being a dead platform and AM5 future upgrades. AM4, long live the GOAT of all PC tech.
What isnt fair by most critics is that the 9000 series is able to match the 7000 series are much lower power input, which for me is a huge win. It means that your room wont get as hot as before
I think AMD is in good direction of making 9000 more efficient instead of being power hungry to increase performance. I believe the PBO shall unleash good overall gain or better comparing to older chip since it has a good starting point. The rumor said that next 3D chip would support overclock, it may have something to do with this efficiency. With 4nm FinFET, the chip shall have better performance per watt ratio which resulting less heat as well. Looking forward the testing with PBO enable and overclock.
So it's cheaper and you can run it with a stock cooler, which makes it cheaper still, and it uses less electricity, which makes it cheaper, and use a smaller case and a smaller power supply etc etc
That's the way I see it. IMO, that's a good thing and real progress....because seriously, who cares about more gaming framerates on an RTX 4090. With a more attainable GPU like a 4070 Super or even 4080 Super the gap between EVERY CPU would diminish drastically.
If this power efficiency path continues to be followed successfully, in 20 years the 4000-series Nvidia & 9000-series Ryzen will be looked back at as the ones that paved the way for futuristic compact PCs, mark my words here 👌🏻
I feel another ~$30USD drop in price is needed from the Ryzen 9000 cpu lineup on the 9600x and 9700x to make them a more compelling option as 7000 series is decent value atm. Saying that the energy savings and lower cooling requirements is a good move imo while still offer a small performance increase. Im holding personally out for the 9000X3D CPUs to upgrade my rig 💪👍
Dude the 5800x3D is surreal. I’m on an aging i7 7700K and actually considering that one as my ram is high end and would only need a new mobo. Thoughts on the 5800x3D for 3-5 years of gaming? 1440p and 4K.
CPUs won't be a limitation for framerates in general. Neither will high end GPUs to be honest. Performance these days seems to be tied to optimizations (or lack thereof) in games themselves.
X3D chips are terrible in multithreading, they are for gaming only and basic stuff. the other CPUs are different. Comparing apple to oranges it's pointless. If you buy Intel for gaming you are doing something wrong. Only enthusiast or workload should buy Intel. The average user can't feel the performance difference between 5700x and the 9700x. The real comparison is between 9700x vs 14700k and 9600x vs 14600k. If you throw the X3D in the mix then they are 20% better in gaming but 40% slower in multitasking
In the next video please check all kinds of inbetweens, not only 88W versus 142W and unlocked. Because that is something nobody else reviewing those chips seems to be doing. I'd like to see the performance at 100W, 110W, 120W...
So, this gen is laptop or small profile champion. And with that thermalhead room, i can really see AMD pushing the new architecture harder. And later bios might unlock power limits and let us push it higher this gen.
As someone with a 3800x rn I'm definitely thinking about upgrading, but the real problem is my gpu. I have a 5700 xt currently and have since 2020 but I don't want to upgrade both if im keeping the same cpu platform, and my gpu needs an upgrade sometime soon. Maybe I wait for 2025? Just not confident in buying on am4 if I'm going to want to upgrade for both productivity and gaming in the near future.
You should add a Rimworld TPS test to check for single core performance in simulation games Something like a map where you spawn a certain amount of enemy and see the max TPS
Its good to see energy efficient processors. I think this new generation of cpus are already too fast for most of users. I'm an architect and I work on heavy renders and multitasking. My 3900xt still rocks!
When you do tests with Pbo, please include also 1 moderate Ppt configuration,. Somewhere in middle between 88watts and the unrestrained 170-ish watts... Maybe 120 watt PPT.
Honestly, I feel like there's a lot to like in the 9700X. Mostly for the folks that like to make SFF builds. The 9700X may be on par (more or less) with the 7700X, but given the fact that it take SIGNIFICANTLY less power and is SIGNIFICANTLY cooler to run while basically maintaining the performance of the 7700X, makes this PERFECT for SFF computing! Its a step in AMD direction of their Ryzen lineup. Zen 1 brought a complete redesign and brought more than 4/6 cores to the masses. Zen 2 brought the chiplet design which was a boon to AMD's bottom line to focus on Data center and workstation markets, which SIGNIFICANTLY boosted money for further R&D. Zen 3 brought a refinement of the Zen 2 architecture by unifying the CCX's into a single CCD, as well as bringing one of the best innovations in modern CPUs: 3D-Vcache. Zen 4 brought performance scaling with respect to increased speed (previous generations didn't get more performance when increasing Ghz where Zen 4 did). Now Zen 5 is bringing efficiency into the picture. Zen 5 3D-Vcache chips are going to be MONSTROUS for gaming performance as well as gaming efficiency. Zen 6 is going to be (from what a hear) a very significant change from previous architectures. Very much looking forward to that!
I’m really impressed still with my 3800 X. Of course, it has shown at Sage but it’s still keeping up. I got it paired with the 6750 XT and all title so far or above 60 FPS 1440 P. Of course, with some FSR help.
im going from AM4 to AM5 this gen, so im lookig forward to what else ZEN 5 dishes out, in Denmark where i live power is insanely expencive unless its pretty windy outside, pro/cons with wind power ;)
Which is a second step towards SFF PCs becoming a norm. In few years ATX as a go-to form-factor for mass consumers will start fading into obscurity, the shift has already begun with the release of Nvidia 4000-series.
It's about time they started focusing more on efficiency. I actually don't mind the focus on efficiency over performance. I do have to sit next to my computer, and it'll be nice to not have it feel like a furnace. Even if you have a beefy cooler, that heat still has to exhaust somewhere.
I have been completely impressed with the new chips, hell even the 9600x is 80% of the performance all around compared to the 7800x3d at HALF the TDP, and that is straight out the box, that is huge. If your only concern is gaming FPS, sure these are sort of a let down but for the average consumer these chips are a win, as well as a win for the SFF builders as 65w TDP is much easier to deal with.
For us paying over £0.20 per kwh say we use it on average working and for gaming the CPU alone will save you £30+ a year in contrast to the previous gen. That is just with 8 hours of use per day at 300 days a year. Let alone easier to cool so in the summer it helps. Also, I am upgrading from a 3700X Ryzen 7.
My NCase M2 just arrived for my sfs build - Going to be going 800 series chipset motherboard + 7800x3d - just gonna rock that - but want the newer platform motherboard.
You'd think that, but the heat coming off the IHS isn't ideal. It can easily push 90C on a good 360 AIO with PBO. AMD failed to improve the die to IHS heat transfer.
I am running a 3950x for DaVinci and video/photo editing as well as gaming. I was considering upgrading to the 9000 series, but where does this leave me?
Yes it is finally time to upgrade to Ryzen 5700x3D from Ryzen 2600X, or I might wait a bit till the second hand price of that CPU is around 100$ from Aliexpress, this is the most logical upgrade, no need to change board or RAM
Amd should've only launch these new cpu for europe only , electricity there is expensive but in north america we need 105watt versions for more performance , amd please release 9800x for us , Maybe its fir those who are still on zen2 should go for zen5 9700x , it will offer massive upgrade , those on zen4 should not buy zen5 , golden rule always skip 1 generation and wait for zen6.
Will use the 9700X or 9900X for my office PC to replace my 3800X. Don't need X3D for not gaming, so I'm sure it's a good choice with a good price tag and an even lower power draw.

There is no efficiency play. NONE! Everyone who follows the space knows about the 7700 (non x). The 9700x brought neigh nothing for most people. For those that did get something out of it are not watching these videos.
It's not lower price either, the 7700 even comes with a CPU cooler and is much cheaper and only 7% slower. These reviewers just bought AMDs marketing BS without questioning it at all. Zen 5 is a total overpriced flop.

Would choose a 5800x3d instead a 5700x3d is a bottom bin 5800x3d with amp up voltage at a lower frequency.

I used to use a RX 580 4gb, but just before that I was running an I7 950 with a GTX 460 since 2010 till 2019, I did mostly photo editing so I didn't need a lot of gpu and cpu power all that time. Then I wanted to get a bit into gaming and upgraded to the RX 580 4gb, then I decided to upgrade it all in 2021. Then got a RTX 3060 in 2022.
I mostly use it on my tv and I've seen high refresh rate monitors but 60hz is fine for me lol. So given I use my 4k tv at 1080p at 60hz, I'm sitting on a lot of power. I don't have high requirements lol.
Tbh, remember when NFS: The Run was released and it was locked to 30fps? Everyone was losing their sh*t, I was fine with 30fps lol, I'm an outlier. heh. Get me a handheld that can do 30-60fps and I'm fine lol.

Everyone seems disappointed in the Ryzen 9000 right now, but I agree with you. This approach is exactly what's needed. High efficiency per watt, lowering long term energy costs and usage while also delivering a slight increase or on par performance. I see this as a win for everyone who skipped out on the Ryzen 7000 launch/ upgrade cycle. I will wait to see what the R9 9950x/ 9900x results will be, but I foresee a similar scenario shaping up. I am all for it. I was going to wait for Intel Arrow Lake in the hopes they correct their efficiency/ power issues but with all the issues they've been having I will just go for the Ryzen 9000 series.
It is under rated for sure. If I was Amd, I probably would've given the 9000 series 20% more power, but PBO seems to do about that
i is not directly a question of being or not exciting but rather where you as an user sits. If you are for example gaming at 4k resolution like me, the efficiency is kind of redundant since all the current cpus being it amd or intel will drop consumption considerably once they get to a stage where they are waiting for the gpu. So while if you are at 1080 going from 120 to 65 or so looks good , if you are at 4k, where a 7700 was not pulling 120 but probably between 80 and 90, the efficiency gain is considerably more limited, as there is diminishing returns and minimal operational consumption (that is around 25) so a 4k user will go from lets say 85 to around 60 watts what over a year means less 20 euros, or a monthly saving of less than 2 euros each 30 days.
well if AMD pushed those to higher power they would be like 10-20% better than the older ones for the same wattage

The 9700X is not the upgrade you're looking for. At least for $360. There are better options for cheaper.
Got a 7700 for efficiency, but also to adopt the new socket from the beginning. I'm very happy with my decision, hopefully they launch three or four more generations down the line - the 9700X, so far, is not worth upgrading to.
Thats usually the norm, you don't really upgrade your PC parts until you feel its worth it. 👍🏻

I think the 7700X is a good blend of all-core performance 8c/16t and gaming so it has a good amount of staying power. On the other hand, the 9000-series isn't being launched as a potential upgrade path for 7000-series users. Its there as an efficiency play for people who might care about power & temperatures while also offering a bit more performance than the 7000-series.

7950x3d Was my go to, had it since launch and it’s been a brilliant cpu for gaming and multi threaded workloads. I’ll be keeping my eye on the release of the 9950x3d.
Also notes on your final thoughts, I don’t think CPUs need to be faster, in a lot of ways they are more than fast enough. We need efficiency and optimization. AMD can see that and I’m all for it.

This was a great video, thanks for highlighting the power efficiency and what someone from an older system like a 3700x might be considering for an upgrade, not just looking at benchmarks and making snap opinions like everyone else. Everyone seems to forget that the 9700x performing like a 7700x but only using 2/3 the power is quite good. Just wait for the 9900x which has 2x the TDP, then zen 5 will stretch its legs.
So it looks like my 5800x3D is still the best CPU in that price bracket. Hopefully the 9000 series 3D chips show more potential.

As someone who appreciates power efficiency, AMD did the right move here. Sure it doesn't move the needle for most gamers, but it is still a win for the consumer. Lower price, higher efficiency.

It's clear that AMD went the efficiency route this generation. It leaves a lot of headroom for overclocking. a poorly configured PBO can increase multithreaded performance by around 20% in some test
Lower prices and better efficiency. It's alright honestly, AMD knew obviously no one would be wowed, but it isn't all that bad. Now a decent mid range air cooler can deal with these chips easily.
I'm getting myself a 5800x3D or 5700x3D anyways though, no hassle with platform changing for now.

Zen 5 strategy is for the datacenter and mobile. Unfortunately, it leaves the desktop in a strange place, however the 9800x3D will still wipe the floor in terms of gaming performance. By the numbers we see, you can expect up to 10% higher from the 7800x3D.
00:44: Ryzen 7 9700X offers a compelling upgrade option for Ryzen 3000 users.
02:15: 9700X shows impressive power efficiency, outperforming previous generation CPUs.
04:24: Zen 5 architecture focuses on efficiency rather than significant performance gains.
06:01: Gaming performance of 9700X is competitive but not groundbreaking against older models.

Once these come down in price, as they surely will, their low cooling requirements will make them a reliable pick. The majority of users outside of high end enthusiasts won't really need anything faster than the 9700x considering GPU bottlenecks. Or just opt for the 7800x3d once those come down in price post 9800x3d launch. Looking forward to seeing the PBO results.

No regrets buying a 5800x3d in December. I didn’t even consider the AM5 platform. My GPU runs games well, doesn’t run hot and is not power hungry. Plays all my AAA games well with a 4070ti Super at 4k on my LG C1.

So I have the 5800X and thought to replace with 5800X3D, but I am liking the idea of jumping to DDR5 Ram and very hopefully, cooler CPU temps so maybe I am the target audience here since I am not so much of a "gotta be fastest" kinda person. But I wanna see the 9800X3D first.

Same here! It's STILL a great chip, I upgraded to it and an RTX 3060 from an I7 950 with a Gtx 460 from back in 2010 bout 3 years ago and I have no recent plans to upgrade. I play games on my 4k tv at 60hz at 1080p, I'm fine! lol. I think we're good for a while.
P.S. You could always go tiny home! A good 50-70k and being mobile with a solar setup? If you don't mind minimizing and don't have a bunch of kids, it might be something to look into. ^_^

I wonder why only some reviewers are comparing PBO with stock for this chip. The IPC improvements from Zen 5 are there, but the mainstream narrative seems to ignore this.
The 5800X3D stole the show here, in some games its winning over the 7000 series by up to 40 fps while beating the 9700X by a few fps in a few games. Just holding its own would have been great but, the results shown here are nothing short of a amazing. AM4 had more new CPUs introduced this year than AM5 up until the 9000X flops and there is nothing here for 7000 series owners to upgrade to. So much for AM4 being a dead platform and AM5 future upgrades. AM4, long live the GOAT of all PC tech.

I think AMD is in good direction of making 9000 more efficient instead of being power hungry to increase performance. I believe the PBO shall unleash good overall gain or better comparing to older chip since it has a good starting point. The rumor said that next 3D chip would support overclock, it may have something to do with this efficiency. With 4nm FinFET, the chip shall have better performance per watt ratio which resulting less heat as well. Looking forward the testing with PBO enable and overclock.
So it's cheaper and you can run it with a stock cooler, which makes it cheaper still, and it uses less electricity, which makes it cheaper, and use a smaller case and a smaller power supply etc etc
That's the way I see it. IMO, that's a good thing and real progress....because seriously, who cares about more gaming framerates on an RTX 4090. With a more attainable GPU like a 4070 Super or even 4080 Super the gap between EVERY CPU would diminish drastically.
If this power efficiency path continues to be followed successfully, in 20 years the 4000-series Nvidia & 9000-series Ryzen will be looked back at as the ones that paved the way for futuristic compact PCs, mark my words here 👌🏻
What was the power consumption of 9700x during cinebench r23? 21,000 in pbo? If pbo enabled then what is the power consumption and temp?
I feel another ~$30USD drop in price is needed from the Ryzen 9000 cpu lineup on the 9600x and 9700x to make them a more compelling option as 7000 series is decent value atm. Saying that the energy savings and lower cooling requirements is a good move imo while still offer a small performance increase.

Dude the 5800x3D is surreal. I’m on an aging i7 7700K and actually considering that one as my ram is high end and would only need a new mobo. Thoughts on the 5800x3D for 3-5 years of gaming? 1440p and 4K.
CPUs won't be a limitation for framerates in general. Neither will high end GPUs to be honest. Performance these days seems to be tied to optimizations (or lack thereof) in games themselves.

The framerates between the 9700x and 7800x3d in your benchmarks are pretty similar. Why is there such a big difference on other channels?
X3D chips are terrible in multithreading, they are for gaming only and basic stuff. the other CPUs are different. Comparing apple to oranges it's pointless. If you buy Intel for gaming you are doing something wrong. Only enthusiast or workload should buy Intel. The average user can't feel the performance difference between 5700x and the 9700x.
The real comparison is between 9700x vs 14700k and 9600x vs 14600k. If you throw the X3D in the mix then they are 20% better in gaming but 40% slower in multitasking
In the next video please check all kinds of inbetweens, not only 88W versus 142W and unlocked. Because that is something nobody else reviewing those chips seems to be doing. I'd like to see the performance at 100W, 110W, 120W...
While PPT can easily be set on Intel chips the same can't be said about AMD CPUs

So, this gen is laptop or small profile champion. And with that thermalhead room, i can really see AMD pushing the new architecture harder. And later bios might unlock power limits and let us push it higher this gen.
As someone with a 3800x rn I'm definitely thinking about upgrading, but the real problem is my gpu. I have a 5700 xt currently and have since 2020 but I don't want to upgrade both if im keeping the same cpu platform, and my gpu needs an upgrade sometime soon. Maybe I wait for 2025? Just not confident in buying on am4 if I'm going to want to upgrade for both productivity and gaming in the near future.

Its good to see energy efficient processors. I think this new generation of cpus are already too fast for most of users. I'm an architect and I work on heavy renders and multitasking. My 3900xt still rocks!
When you do tests with Pbo, please include also 1 moderate Ppt configuration,. Somewhere in middle between 88watts and the unrestrained 170-ish watts... Maybe 120 watt PPT.

Honestly, I feel like there's a lot to like in the 9700X. Mostly for the folks that like to make SFF builds. The 9700X may be on par (more or less) with the 7700X, but given the fact that it take SIGNIFICANTLY less power and is SIGNIFICANTLY cooler to run while basically maintaining the performance of the 7700X, makes this PERFECT for SFF computing! Its a step in AMD direction of their Ryzen lineup. Zen 1 brought a complete redesign and brought more than 4/6 cores to the masses. Zen 2 brought the chiplet design which was a boon to AMD's bottom line to focus on Data center and workstation markets, which SIGNIFICANTLY boosted money for further R&D. Zen 3 brought a refinement of the Zen 2 architecture by unifying the CCX's into a single CCD, as well as bringing one of the best innovations in modern CPUs: 3D-Vcache. Zen 4 brought performance scaling with respect to increased speed (previous generations didn't get more performance when increasing Ghz where Zen 4 did). Now Zen 5 is bringing efficiency into the picture.
Zen 5 3D-Vcache chips are going to be MONSTROUS for gaming performance as well as gaming efficiency. Zen 6 is going to be (from what a hear) a very significant change from previous architectures. Very much looking forward to that!
I’m really impressed still with my 3800 X. Of course, it has shown at Sage but it’s still keeping up. I got it paired with the 6750 XT and all title so far or above 60 FPS 1440 P. Of course, with some FSR help.

It's about time they started focusing more on efficiency. I actually don't mind the focus on efficiency over performance. I do have to sit next to my computer, and it'll be nice to not have it feel like a furnace. Even if you have a beefy cooler, that heat still has to exhaust somewhere.

Correct because in the gaming, its munching on some excess heat being distributed by the GPU.
I have been completely impressed with the new chips, hell even the 9600x is 80% of the performance all around compared to the 7800x3d at HALF the TDP, and that is straight out the box, that is huge. If your only concern is gaming FPS, sure these are sort of a let down but for the average consumer these chips are a win, as well as a win for the SFF builders as 65w TDP is much easier to deal with.
For us paying over £0.20 per kwh say we use it on average working and for gaming the CPU alone will save you £30+ a year in contrast to the previous gen. That is just with 8 hours of use per day at 300 days a year. Let alone easier to cool so in the summer it helps. Also, I am upgrading from a 3700X Ryzen 7.
Have a separate production pc (5800x) & gaming PC (7700k) - when my 7700k system eventually gives up (overclocked), ill definitely go for a ryzen X3D

You'd think that, but the heat coming off the IHS isn't ideal. It can easily push 90C on a good 360 AIO with PBO. AMD failed to improve the die to IHS heat transfer.

It's not lower price either, the 7700 even comes with a CPU cooler and is much cheaper and only 7% slower. These reviewers just bought AMDs marketing BS without questioning it at all. Zen 5 is a total overpriced flop.
