      Also... Eren being so obsessed with Mikasa in the end shows HOW he could know what Ymir was feeling... the obsession and love Ymir had with Fritz, that made her stick around for 2000 years. It's the same he feels toward Mikasa, that's how he could tell what she was feeling... he knows it. And why Ymir would side with him over Zeke in the first place.

    I never had a problem with Eren's emotional breakdown in of itself.
    It's the fact he did so AFTER admitting to killing 80% of all humanity, billions of people. It sounds like "I killed billions, but waaaahhh, I don't want Mikasa to find another man!"
    In the anime, they swapped the order. They made Eren cry first, and then used it to make Eren admit to trampling billions, and arguing that he for that reason should not be allowed to live. That made a lot more sense.

    Eren's dialogue after Armin punches him is just a reminder that these kids are STILL 19 YEARS OLD. At their core, they're children for god's sake!! They've been burdened with these larger-than-life powers, responsibilities, these tragic fates, these horrific existences. But they're still kids, they're still teenagers, and you shouldn't forget about that. Why? Because that is all part of their tragedy. They should've had a normal childhood, a normal teenagehood, they should've had time to worry about their crushes and their childish wants. Instead, Eren had to see the most fucked up thing imaginable for any single person and become a slave to it for the following years until his death. The big scary skeletal murder monster makes you forget about that. This scene reminds you about that. It IS cringe because Eren IS cringe, EREN. IS. A. TEEN. And that's what's so sad and tragic about all of this, and about that scene.

      I had very mixed feelings when the manga ended with how the story took its turn. but it wasnt until i read a youtube comment that pointed out that Eren wasnt even trying to save the world, he just wanted to give his friends peace for as long as they could live. Eren never wanted to be heroic in the first place, and i became more understanding with the ending, the story has always been about survival, from beginning to end. What Eren did is still unjustifiable cause he mustve stomped on people that has nothing to do with Paradisian suffering. It just goes to show that the story never tried to be overly deep or heroic, it was just about survival

  • @subhamdas943

    The dislike the manga ending, but I think the anime ending is a genuine improvement:
    1. One issue of the fake death of Jean and connie remains but the fact that they decided to release this all as ine large episode greatly helps it as it does give you the whiplash of emotions.
    2. The change in the armin and eren scene was great and saved the ending here for me. Wven if its a mistranslation, "Thankyou Eren for being a mass murderer for our sakes" is a tereible line no matter how you look at it. Instead I love the new dialogue and the part about Armin taking equal responsibility for all of it and how they will both meet each other in hell is just lovely.

    • @darrel7493
      @darrel7493 6 місяців тому +6

      Yeah, I think that line was always misinterpreted. It was meant to be Armin while being polite, trying to point out how ridiculous Eren's position was. It was sarcastic and a little bitter.But that complexity can just not be shown in a manga panel. Anime tranlated things to be what the author almost meant the scene too come across as.

    • @d.k.hapsari6030
      @d.k.hapsari6030 6 місяців тому +1

      1. I don't remember there was a scene where Jean and Connie faked their death? Where? Even i didn't see it in the manga. They changed to Titan, but they don't die because their neck didn't cut. They turned back as human after the curse lifted.
      2. i am agree with you but not about the line. Like @darrel7493 said, those line was like polite sarcasm from Armin to Eren. I think its just how Isayama delivered it in misunderstanding way. maybe it was due to different culture or missed in translation. Maybe, in Japan, those type of lines were really seen as harsh. But, since we are not Japanese, it was difficult to digest. That's why me personally don't have issue with the lines. But i agree with you that the change in anime, made the dialogues were more comprehensive and easy to understand. Also the emotions shared by the two and the half responsibility took by Armin, showed how he still cared for Eren and not abandoned him at all, like you said, It's lovely. Kudos to Kaji Yuuki and Inoue Marina who well delivered dialogues in real emotional voices.
      It is just, i found the scene where they hugged suddenly after looked at each other, really funny. I like the way they did it in manga tho. But, it is just my personal opinions.

      @@kingkiller5325 it's just bad writing tbh. there are better ways to end it.
      there could've been a confrontation between Eren and Armin with clashing ideologies (when armin was deepthroated by the okapi)
      We could've had more dialogue from Levi and Hange about how the pressure of being the commander made her forget that the Titans are beautiful (to her)
      -Reiner's redemption arc isn't finished
      -Annie and Pieck had nothing.
      -Historia's pregnancy is a red herring (in a story where every little details mattered)
      -Kruger's advice was for nothing
      -Themes of the "sins of the father" were never realized
      -Most characters are butchered, their motivations, actions and words make no sense.
      -Lost girls don't add anything to the story
      -The ending's lessons are terrible: don't defend yourself and your loved ones if someone wants to kill you; no matter how hard you work and try, in the end destiny resolves everything; treat your children like garbage and dgas about their future; feelings of one single person are more important than lives of millions of people; never move on from someone you are obsessed with and so on
      tl;dr - But of course you won't read this because truth hurts.

      There are a few valid reasons you should be unsatisfied with the ending like the fact the MC died and it’s kind of ok cause he completed all his goals but it’s just like Annie said think about yourself as well, and it’s stupid as well that he could have taken their powers they never would’ve caught up completed the rumbling then erased all their memories of the rumbling and erase titan powers with the founder keeping himself and all his friends alive and exploring the open free world, I mean that ending would be goated. And one line I didn’t like was Eren agreeing that he was a slave to freedom cause that’s an oxymoron you can’t be a slave to freedom or you would be the most free and Eren was the least free, the line just isn’t good.

It completely changed my view of the ending. After checking out the ending in the manga form it felt cluncky, abrubt, too few lines to really grasp what the characters meant but in the anime they expanded that whole Armin/Eren scene so much it finally clicked for me.

Reminds me a lot of that moment in the Bible where Jesus talks to God Father before being crucified and asks if there isn’t any other way. He IS God, he KNOWS that it’s his destinty, and yet he doesn’t want to die to fulfill it, because he is human as well and it goes against his very nature. Nothing pathetic in that. Eren's breakdown was a brilliant writing twist. He is a kid, he is by no means an adult, and all this horror they went through since Shiganshina fell it makes you forget how young these people really are. When faced with his own demise and that he will die and not be around, that is horrifying, scary and depressing. It's a cry for help. Holding onto not wanting things to change, holding onto not wanting people to move on because you love them. Is it selfish? Absolutely. That's how humans are.

I don't know what were the original way it was written but it could be a a subtle way of the author to tell us that eren is indeed slave to freedom like he said in the adaptation, by using the same words Ymir was told before being chased in the woods : You are free.

For example, the reveal of Eren killing 80 percent of humanity being moved to the end, Armin reacting to it like any normal person would hearing that and the extra added lines. I didn't like how he was so passive about it in the manga. But other than that, the ending is amazing it was just the conversation that killed it for me.

  • @tomi832

    I don't really understand why people call Eren's crying scene pathetic...
    What I see is a teenager that was destined to wipe out most of humanity and see and feel every step of that, that knows that he's gonna die...but wishes to be with his friends and most of all - the woman he loves.
    He never admitted it, but finally when he faced the fact that he's going to die in front of his friends, and that he doesn't wanna die - he confronts the reality that he will never be with Mikasa.
    He's childish for saying that he doesn't want her to get over him for a decade, but it makes sense of such a person that faces such things with his immaturity, to say that!
    I swear half the people that criticize this scene, would've absolutely said the same thing if they were in Eren's shoes.
    It's immature, but it's humane.
    I personally see the cabin scene as his memory gift to Mikasa, where they pretended to run away.
    In the paths you don't have time, so this could very well be for months that they "played" this.
    For both Mikasa, and Eren.

      @@RevolverOcelot94 I think it was to stop the outside world from being capable of attacking paradise/Eren's friends so that Eren's friends could live long lives and be seen as heroes. In being seen as heroes, peace can be achieved for a time.

    • @GBDupree
      @GBDupree 6 місяців тому +5

      @@RevolverOcelot94basically yeah. I imagine he tried doing things without the Rumbling, and Paradis was destroyed (Marley was already capable of fighting titans). Even starting the Rumbling as a show of force but not attacking would also just cause Marley to want to attack first and they might win. So immediately using the Rumbling to attack without much time to prepare was the best way to ensure its effectiveness, which in turn guarantees Paradis survives at all.
      But in truth, Eren didn't really want to start the Rumbling. Though a part of him did. Basically he sees the outside world in general as his enemies, but not everyone in specific. And faced with his future actions born out of the need for revenge, he grows softer towards the innocents. So when he says that he kills 80% of the world, that was the LEAST he could manage, he would have done less if possible.
      Without the rumbling, Paradis and his friends suffer and die, with the Rumbling everyone else dies, through his final gambit to sever his ties to his friends and sacrifice himself so that they can stop the rumbling he can save his friends and also spare at least 20% of the world.
      In this case his friends are likely guaranteed safety as being the saviors of the world, and hopefully having people outside Paradis would create a world that MUST learn to coexist, rather than only one nation living alone and never learning to let go of their hatred for others. This shows with Levi giving kids candy that the world is coming together to rebuild. So it does end up being a best possible outcome given the criteria Eren was aiming for.
      Though, whose to say that there was a better way if Eren was willing to sacrifice his friends (though he technically already did, given his reaction to Shasha's death, almost like that was one sacrifice that he couldn't avoid without further sacrifices).
      But I think the ending is supposed to show 2000 years passing, of which at least a 1000 of peace before the futuristic war starts. So he was successful at holding off war for a very long time, which is pretty good considering he was only aiming for his friends lifetime.
      But this is all my interpretation, but I think it tracks with what the story implies.

    • @d.k.hapsari6030
      @d.k.hapsari6030 6 місяців тому +2

      @RevolverOcelot94 No, this idea was already said by Pixis, but Eren disagreed by it. He said that those ideas were like bedtime stories, to good to be true. common enemy to unite people was Marley propaganda, using Paradis as enemy.
      What Eren did was creating heroes / saviors who saved the world and people will owed them (SC) which turned people to sided with the heroes, and they will listened to what heroes wanted as a "reward" to save the world. This were a concept that already did by Marley with Tybur and King Fritz, "created" Helios the Hero. Also in Uprising Arc manga, Armin already explained this concepts as Erwin's plan (the scene was when Hange and Levi tortured Sannes and co, while Eren cs talked about how they were not good people again. This scene was not in the anime). So, basically, rumbling is inspired by King Fritz and Erwin's plan but with worldwide scale.

    Honestly, anime ending helped make more sense to all the open questions in it. Essentially Eren seeked for freedom, but it was impossible as he was fated to die no matter what. He was slipping out of that cage of 'freedom' by killing everyone. Ymir just wanted to even the scales... her curse essentially came from hatred on her beloved that betrayed her time and time again without any escape as a slave consort with her three daughters. She needed a release that she wasn't allowed with her own hands: Lover killing another. Even when Ymir's curse is not there, it truly shows that the cycle wasn't just aroun Ymir's curse, but in whole of humanity. Hatred, love and grudges are inherently linked in humans that cannot be erased. Another rile up, biased narrative, could turmoil another tragedy.

    I think Eren only laughed because of what Sasha said. I interpret Eren saying "I tested it" as in "I tried to change the circumstances so the rumbling wasn't necessary, but I didn't succeed". The rumbling after all WAS his wish. He says multiple times that he wanted to do it, that he wanted to level everything. He said it to Ramzi and he said it again to Armin. Add to this what Eren was thinking when he walked through Marley in the first special "I imagine we never found a way to safe Paradis", which can only mean that he was trying to find ways to safe Paradis without the Rumbling. As he didn't find any, the Rumbling was the only way to reach his goal. And he knew that. I guess what I wanted to say is: In the end what Eren saw when he touched Historia was the result of his choices and not the result of some invisible force preventing him from choosing a different path. He was free. His freedom led to the Rumbling. His extraordinaire wish for freedom (being a "slave" to freedom) only made his choices easier.

If you would have the same choice ten times and the parameters are the same every time I'm sure you would make the same choice ten times. The same is true for Eren, the only thing that could have prevented him from doing the Rumbling would be a change in circumstances. The question if this is "freedom" in this case is a brutally philosophical one. If one were to say "no" then no human ever had, has or will have freedom of choice, because the result will always be determined by the circumstances.

    I understand it like this. Eren knows that wars will never end (as shown in the epilogue). Therefore to save his people he wants to kill the titan powers, because otherwise his people will always be targeted by the rest of the world. Armin understands him and tries to reason with him that he doesn't need the rumbling. But Eren says "why would they believe us" (shown when the Eldians DO lose their power but are still threatened by the Marleyans) and Armin says they just have to convince them / talk it out. That argument isn't enough for Eren and so he sends out the rumbling to reset the world. Thing is though that the ending makes them both kinda right. Armin still has to travel around doing foreign politics to convince people that Eldians are good. With the world destroyed no country can retaliate and wipe out the now powerless Eldians and so Eren is right. Whether the rumbling was needed or not we don't know. If titans existed in the modern day and all lived on an island. Would the governments decide to send nuclear weapons and wipe them out? It would definitely be suggested.
    Also Eren IS controlled by Ymir he sees the future but can't avoid it. So did HE really send titans to kill his mom or did Ymir force him to? Just because he knows it's going to happen doesn't mean he can stop it the timeline is already set in stone.

    The part of the ending that still rocks me (after reading the manga and watching the anime finale last night) is the continuity of war and the cycle of violence. Even though Armin and friends had some peace in their lifetimes, it actually made my stomach drop and I felt hopeless knowing that the cycle of pain and killing just continued, forgetting the horrible past they came from - it fits PERFECTLY with the themes of the show that it explored, but it makes me feel sick almost, like our characters suffered so much for almost no reason (even though there were A LOT of reasons and a broken kid with too much power) - I still think it was an amazing adaption, one of the greatest stories ever told

    How could Eren direct Dina to his mother when he can only send memories to former Attacking Titan carriers? Or was he really in the past and could use the Founding abilities there?

    I was really glad we got to have a moment of OG Eren with Armin when he broke down about how he felt about Mikasa. I enjoyed AoT S4, but one thing it missed was OG Eren. After he touched hands with Historia and saw his future, he wasn't the same anymore and it kind of felt like we had a new character in the body of an old one for the majority of S4. But the overall play of S4 was done really well!

    After reading the manga ending I was honestly so emotional I was scared to watch it animated and just go into an existential crisis over how intensely it hit me. Can’t believe we’ve been able to see such a monumental story come to an end in the manga and the anime, one of the favourite pieces of writing, no matter the medium or genre. I remember people being upset with the original manga ending but I loved that there wasn’t an easy way to tie up the
    conflict. I also liked the scene with Eren showing his original personality is still in there, and how much he did love Mikasa the whole time… it really feels like a young man struggling so deeply and realistically with losing the person he loves. I found the anime ending gorgeous too and such a beautiful way to tie everything together. It was poignant and I appreciate that there are no easy answers in the story and the cycle of war is realistic. You summed it better than I could’ve!

And talking about the scene where Mikasa is visiting the grave along with a man, I truly believe it's Armin and in anime they even portrayed a woman along with her child behind them standing as if waiting for the man who's with mikasa which suggests it's Annie with her adopted child which further solidifies everything..

      Sasha laughing when eren says he wants his friends to live long healthy lives.
      Eren using the founding titans powers to remove the ability to become titans why? We know paradise island will form a army and eren thinks paradise island > the world, so why not give them a slight edge? He also has the founders powers so it's not like he can't remove all the cons of having titan powers like a short lifespan.

    In ending credits scene, after it showed the destruction of the future paradis island, it showed the a man standing in front of the tree eren is buried under. Do you think that tree is deliberately meant to look similar to the tree ymir fell into??

    • @TheMarc1k1
      @TheMarc1k1 6 місяців тому +5

      It is a direct parallel yes, the tree the boy is about to enter at the end is the one Eren was buried beside, the entire ending of the show really is trying to talk about the inevitable and cyclical nature of violence and history but with also some hope from people like Armin who want to at least try and make things better.
      I feel like some of that got through as yes, the world destroyed itself again, but this child entering the tree isn't being hunted like the last, simply exploring what was left behind, so somewhere along the line some change was affected no matter how small and could mean the next person to bring that power into the world won't be haunted by such a horrible past.

    In the anime, the biggest change was the revelation of Eren's true motivation and goal on why he did all the things he did using the power of the Founding Titan and the Attack Titan, influencing the past to make sure the right timeline's events should happen that leads to The Rumbling... but as the anime revealed, Eren can't change some events that will happen even though he tried many times to alter them... in the end, unlike in the manga Eren's goal was just following the path that was set for him by Ymir, but in the anime Eren's true intention was revealed as "he was just an idiot who wants to level everything", and so repairing the broken contradictory of Eren's character aka "Eren's Character Assassination by Isayama" that most fans of the series were clamoring to change...

  • @TheSleyar
    @TheSleyar 6 місяців тому +2

    also want to point out that the anime makes erens power in the paths a lot clearer. Eren explains he experiences past present and future all at the same time and sees the various futures through memories. he uses the memories to test the future restults and with that is able to choose which path to take in the real world by sending those memories, hence why he tells armin that he can't undo the bloodshed anymore. the future got set and eren even admits hes a slave to freedom because the outcome he started the rumbling for is freedom for eldia and his friends.
    imo hope this finally puts to bed the obsessive idea that eren was in "stuck" some time loop 🙄

Is it fair for her husband that mikasa wears her scalf all the time which her ex lover gave her. Is it fair for her husband that mikasa goes to her first lovers grave all the time. He was still there and he still had feelings and wants but he hid it behind this facade of someone who doesn’t care. Eren has always cared, his biggest issue is the fact he’s basically a slave to fate. I finally remembered who this character was when he has his breakdown and I think said breakdown was really necessary. People needed to be reminded that this person is simply a person making choices and whether or not those choices are right, that doesn’t stop him from being a person with wants. Barely any people would be 100% okay with killing off a majority of people.

      Yeah that's one thing that really bothered me in the ending. The final interaction between Mikasa and Eren was way too rushed, that scene was the finale of the entire action sequence and it just needed more breathing room. Her kissing his severed head was tragic, but imagine if they had a little dialogue before the sword fell. Mikasa refraining from killing him even after all the things he did, despite knowing what needs to be done. Eren then reminds her what needs to be done, maybe saying sorry or professing his love, leading up to the kiss and then a little goodbye between the two as Mikasa pulls the strength in her to strike down her one true love and Eren being in bliss for finally acheiving the ultimate freedom and being freed from the insane world he was a part of since birth. Something like that would have brought a lot more gravity to that scene, their final interaction and Mikasa's mourning in the scenes thereafter that much heavier.
