      @@gundamfan7541 I will stick take the Last Jedi any day of the week over The Rise of Skywalker. That to me might be my least favorite film in the entire franchise. As the last thing I wanted TROS to be was nothing but a massive retcon of TLJ. But they did exactly that. The only element from TLJ that they decided to keep in was that Rey and Kylo have a strong connection to each other. Other then that they were like. Ohh fans dislike Rose well lets have her be in the film for like 1min and have her not do anything be completely pointless to the plot and not give her any sort of development or arc. Compared to IDK writing her to be a better character that fans might come around to liking. But why do that as that takes energy and writing skills. Instead lets just treat her like she was never a major side character. People had a problem with Holdo doing what she did well lets explain that as being a move that has a 1 and a million chance of working. Fans were upset that their fan theories for who Rey's parents are and who Snoke is. Will lets correct both of them by having Rey be a Palpatine and for Snoke to just be a puppet he was controlling.
      And then all of the other shit that was just bad. The final battle with all the ships was flat as hell. The battle between Rey and Palpatine sucked with him just shooting force lightning and her blocking it. The fake out death of Chewbaka was just terrible and had zero setup was just ohh he was on another ship that we never saw or knew about. The Force heeling that Rey magically learned despite it being something we had never seen until Baby Yoda so how the fuck did she even learn it as nobody could teach her it. The Knight of Ren being such a massive let down they do nothing in the film until they corner Kylo and then are so easily taken care of by him alone. Them thinking that putting a planet killing weapon on a hundred ships would actually a cool and good idea compared to it really just being stupid. Seems like they were just like what would be more scarier then the Death Star or Star Killer base how about 100 ships that have the power of the Death Star. C3P0 sacrifice being undone as quickly as they could. And then possible the worst thing was at the very end where the old women want's to know Rey's last name and she decides ohh I'm a Skywalker now. Despite the entire film being about that is doesn't matter who your family is. Yet instead of owning who her family was and saying she's a Palpatine and trying to change the image of that family. She decides she will become a Skywalker and not only a Skywalker but the last living one.

      @@wisewolftony Rise of Skywalker actually contradicts in many ways the force awakens too, like with Hux. I'm hesitant to spoil but well... Anyone who has seen the film might agree that it's a baffling what happens considering his character in the first film which was explicitly a space nazi (well... more explicit then the franchise usually is about that ofc). Frankly. I agree with people saying Rise of Skywalker was this way because they kinda hoped to please *everyone*, aaaaaand ended up pleasing no one. Typical case of franchises going in a controversial ways but then studios are all like "well fans are unhappy, let's do what the loudest ask!" (note I used the loudest, not the majority. Cauze let's face it, regardless of how you feel about any of theses films, a lot of the loudest people are not always the smartest.... Namely some of them are quite bigots.)
      If you wanna, it's a similar situation then Suicide Squad. It's sad, really. But something you have to expect from major productions. Oh, sure, creators can always manage to do something with franchise and big productions, we've seen this with Villeneuve and Blade Runner 2049, James Gunn with the two Guardians of the Galaxy or all Del Torro's films with Hollywood (except for Mimic, which, thanks to the Weinstein brothers, was a big production mess) (again, regardless of how you feel about theses movies, you can't deny they are very personal for their creator.) And you know, even TFA and TLJ have personal thematics that you can see in their director's filmography. JJ Abrams likes to show people stuck in the past, which can be both shown as something comforting that makes them dream or something negative that holds them back or bring out dangerous ideologies. And while much more comedic then last jedi, Knives Out is a nice satire of the different faces rich people can take (and how, when the chips are down, pole will be egotistical when they feel they're about to lose their privileges.) Ofc there's probably more aspects you could bring out, but you get the point.
      However.... let's face it. It's still big corporations behind wanting to be rentable, and that entrails all sorts of decisions. Heck, wanna know why Disney are, despite what medias and marketing say, so incredibly shy and lazy when integrating gay characters in their film (and this despite other productions having much, MUCH more interesting lgbt themes and characters, including children's shows?) Because censorship. I mean you can't just loose the Chinese and Russian market, you know? So let's just sneak it in so it can be easily removed and pretend we did something (while on the other hand refusing to show a Tibetan in our Marvel film cauze, again, Chinese market!)
      Again, I can't stress enough, good creators can always make what the studio wants *and* create good art, just that you can never really separate a work from the condition it was created it, because it will inevitably affects the result. And this is not also an attacks to all the creators working within the system.

I wish they had worked in Canto Bight better than they had because it carries strong parallels to Luke's sentiment of "It has to end", though instead it's about the endless wars and correct, where Luke has to realize that the Jedi have to start anew, bereft of the problems the old Jedi order had.

    Everyone either despises it, or thinks it’s a decent film. And people always get into flame wars over whether it’s truly good or not, instead of just going into a decent and civil conversation about one’s opinions.

      Rise of Skywalker basically had to go into overdrive to correct the trilogy because TLJ gave it little to work off of. Again, Rise of Skywalker is bad because of the Last of Jedi. If you like Last Jedi then good for you but you cannot dent that it completely derailed this trilogy.

I didn't like them back then (still not a fan, but less hard on them than I used to be), but even I started to get annoyed with how often they would come up out of nowhere and how quickly the criticisms often seemed to escalate to "You're an idiot and/or not a real Star Wars fan if you liked them". It's died down a lot now, but I expect the constant random attacks on The Last Jedi to die down eventually, too.

    Speaking as someone with a military background, Poe was kind of justified in thinking Holdo was going to get them all killed. Her command style throughout the film is really toxic, especially considering there's no reason for her not to be keeping people in the loop about the plan to save their asses in a high stress situation. It comes across like she's just doing it to teach Poe a lesson, which is kind of petty and extremely inappropriate when they could all be dead within a very poorly defined amount of time.
    Poe might be a hot head, but even with the demotion he still seems to be in charge of their starfighter wing (what's left of it, anyway), so he's still senior leadership and has a right to know what's going on. Beyond that, an important part of leadership in a military environment is earning the confidence of the people under you, and flat out refusing to take the few minutes to explain yourself is counterproductive to that.
    What maybe could have saved this idea was giving Holdo a reason to want to keep her plan need-to-know until the last minute, like instead of the lore-breaking hyperspace tracker and that garbage Canto Bight side quest they could have had the B-plot be about Poe, Finn, and Rose looking for a spy transmitting their location to the FO. That would have given all three of them more screentime, probably given the Resistance more character, and avoided Rose's groan-worthy speech about how all evil rich people are arms dealers (brought to you by a multi-billion dollar and undeniably amoral entertainment company bigger than any defense contractor).

    • @josephmarzano4642
      @josephmarzano4642 4 роки тому +9

      @DejaVoodooDoll I'll attempt to go point by point with this:
      Even if she didn't have a plan to begin with, that's not an excuse for not telling anyone about it once she had thought of it.
      I'm not sure what you mean by deserters and mind-readers, but I've never heard of any Force user being able to read random people's minds from a few hundred kilometers.
      Poe was only "kept in the loop" if by that you mean he wasn't relieved of command and thrown in the brig. Also, "revolt" is the wrong word, soldiers mutiny, civilians revolt.
      I don't even particularly like Poe, the only "excuse" I'm offering for him is that his actions were justified given the informed he had available at the time.
      Hyperspace tracking was not established before TLJ, unless you're counting them retroactively saying in the visual dictionary for TLJ that one of the other files Jyn Erso sifted through in Rogue One was the Empire's secret hyperspace tracking research.
      I'm not asking for everyone to be uber competent at their job, just that someone exhibiting such gross incompetence not be treated as if she were in the right.

      The point is that she didn't make everyone aware of the plan to save their asses, as evidenced by Poe not being alone either, something that probably would have reassured anyone who'd want to desert because of the seemingly hopeless situation they were in. And it seems to me that telling everyone about the plan when Poe questioned her about it would have shut him down pretty quick since that was his only talking point.
      I agree his plan was completely absurd, the entire B-plot is, but it is the kind of thing a guy like Poe who's unwilling to sit on his hands waiting to die would do if it was the only option he could see.
      The only handicap I'm grading Poe on is that he's not the commanding officer, in the end it's not his job to reassure everyone and keep order. Holdo lost control of the situation, that's on her. Poe being a reckless idiot doesn't automatically make her right.
      I also don't appreciate the underhanded way of calling me a sexist, there was enough of that coming out of Lucasfilms after the movie came out.

    • @paulbutkovich6103
      @paulbutkovich6103 4 роки тому +7

      @DejaVoodooDoll You also have to note that in the language of cinema having a new character come in and condescend to our established hero is textbook for setting up a villain or at least an antagonist. If they wanted to establish Holdo as having no plan at the beginning then that is what they need to do. Look at The Two Towers when Theoden is blustering about how well they will do and brushing off Aragorn and co. Eventually he takes them aside and explains his motives.
      Holdo is set up as being in the wrong and then "subverted" by having her be in the right. But the subversion doesn't work because of the great leaps in logic required to re-contextualize her actions. Even if we assume Krayt was her plan what she does does not make much sense.

I could easily swap character, item, and term names and we’d have basically any other franchise in the story. Also the stuff with Finn and Rose was bullshit! @@paulbutkovich6103 If I were the designer who designed those bombers and staged that battle, I would've made two major changes:
      1.I would have made the Resistance forces approach the dreadnought from "above" - that is, jumping in so that their line of attack was leading them to the top of the dreadnought, still targeting the same eventual detonation target.
      2.I would have redesigned the StarFortresses so that the cockpit could transit from its in-film location to parallel with the bomb storage column (kind of like how the space shuttle used to sit atop its boosters). Have it sit parallel with the bombs so that it could land and so it could pilot to the target and have it go into T-mode for bomb deployment, with the artificial gravity in the craft changing toward where the bomb chute of the craft was. The artificial gravity could help accelerate the payload to its target, as Linkara mentioned, and you could have a really cool gravity transition scene.
      Once you do that, you end up a more three dimensional battle with a linear attack instead of a perpendicular one.
      I don't take huge issue with how it was portrayed, for what it's worth - but those two things could have added some interesting wrinkles.

      3 years late but I get ya. I used to like TLJ but not anymore mostly from a film making and narrative structure perspective, that and what they did to Finn. And I'm coming this as someone who still to this day, even among the many many MANY problems to what is the Dragon Ball GT of Star Wars, still enjoy TFA.
      If I did have any gripes with Linkara's review is that there are some criticisms of the movie that he either glances over, or honestly didn't think about (Finn especially given what happened to John Boyega behind the scenes) but I don't hold that against him if he actually is aware of why people are miffed about the ST missing out on having a black lead as a jedi being pushed aside to be a side character. I don't hate Rey, I just hate how they put more focus on a white woman instead of having her and john both being the leading characters in this trilogy.
      and agreed, TFA comic is leagues better, though I'd still take the TLJ comic over the movie.

      @DejaVoodooDoll Subverting expectations just to subvert expectations is not good writing. You need to actually have something to say, a new direction and goal when you change the course of your story. Does it subvert expectations when Kylo kills Snoke. Absolutely and I would be down with this. But then Kylo continues to do the same Dark Side things he would have done if Snoke had lived. Canto Bight is lazy worldbuilding, as if merely introducing the idea of war profiteering is somehow deep, no matter how little sense it makes (where did the First Order get the money, why would they buy arms instead of making them, where was the Republic in all this, why would you use slaves when you have droids?). Canto Bight could have had impact, changed the shape of the saga, but instead it is relegated to a C plot and never brought up again. Some subversions work, like Rey's parents being nobodies, but for every one that does there are two that don't. This script needed more drafts to make the whole more cohesive with itself and what came before.

    • @paulbutkovich6103
      @paulbutkovich6103 4 роки тому +1

      @DejaVoodooDoll 1. Yes Sith fanboy did what Sith do. That is why it is not a subversion worth mentioning. It would have been if Kylo had actually tried to break out and find a third way.
      2. It comes up in Canto Bight. It stops the moment they leave Canto Bight. No one ever mentions it again. It has never been mentioned in any other movie. It is in truth an interesting idea that I wish they explored in more detail (or any detail, actually). Maybe meet some of these arms-dealers instead of just Rose straw-manning them. It could help explain how the First Order got so big despite the Republic being at least in nominal control. But the movie does not have the time so they half-ass it. This weakens the movie overall because it reveals the whole Canto Bight subplot to be a plot cul-de-sac, invented to keep Rose and Finn busy and hit our quota of new locations. Most of your explanations are things you are reading into the movies, not things the movies said themselves. That's not a bad thing, mind. But I feel that you are writing whole sections of the movie for Rian Johnson to explain odd creative choices he made.
      3. We saw slavery before, on Tatooine. A backwater planet which the Republic explicitly ignores. The Old Republic explicitly outlawed slavery. Did the New Republic not? Or did they reintroduce it? Canto Bight is far from a backwater. Also why would you have enslaved children doing work that is far better done by adults or droids? These people can surely afford being efficient. The real answer is that the writer wanted us to hate these people but didn't want to take the time to talk to them. How to make sure that the audience knows they're evil? Give them child slaves in order to make them monstrous, despite how little sense that makes. We've seen villains using droids before so why not here and now?
      4. Canto Bight's plan was dumb, sure, but it only went wrong because the writer decided it had to. By having that black BB unit spot BB8. They literally got into the room with the thing, despite how little sense that made. It should have failed when they landed a non-First Order craft in the hangar bay of the Supremacy. Also ask this, what does the whole "risky plans can fail" thing add to the movie? Because to me it tells me "don't put people into corners where they think they need risky plans", a lesson Holdo learned too late.
      Holdo and DJ being mirrors of each other is odd to me because they never meet and they never interact with any of the same characters. Their dialogue and framing does not line up either. If this was Johnson's intention it was executed poorly. I think, however, that it is merely something you read into the film, but am open to having it explained in more detail.

    While not a total redo of ANH, TFA was extremely similar. As was this with TESB. The ST seemed stuck in some bizarre need to both retread the past, while trying to distance itself from it as much as possible, causing yet another layer of dissonance to the whole thing that adds to people being put off by it.
    As to the points bought up, while you could come up with some way those bombers worked, they remain an ungodly abomination of idiotic design that no one could ever legit think would have worked enough to actually build, let alone buy and use them. Way too slow, far too squishy, a cross section that makes barns look hard to hit, having to be lined up directly over the target for a good length of time to drop the payload. The whole.. everything... about them was idioticly designed. What the hell happened to the Y Wings?
    Completely agree with the Leia scene. The idea is great, the way it was shown was ridiculous. Like many issues with this movie, the idea could work, but the way the movie does it just ruins it. Like the cut Poe joke, I like the idea and it is great, but capping it with a 'Your mom" joke pushed it too far.

    The problem with the bomber scene is that Poe just recently called their target a fleet killer. Which of course implies to a lot of people that this thing could destroy their main ships before everyone is able to return. Making his action essential for survival and his demotion very confusing. Holdo adds to that, making her seem even more unreasonable. That line should have been cut and replaced with someone saying they can take a beating long enough for everyone to get onboard. You may assume that's unnecessary, but a lot of people saw the situation in that way and I don't believe that they are stupid for doing so.

It had interesting ideas that, to me, weren't explored adequately because of the need to split time between multiple subplots and the obligatory "AT-ATs need to show up so we can put them in the trailer" scene. I agree that the hate train has gotten as exhausting as the film, if not moreso.

  • @InfernoDragon1

    My thoughts on The Last Jedi is that it was a deeply flawed movie that felt like it should have been the third film in the trilogy rather then the second. That being said I thought it was okay, the Yoda scene was great some of the stuff involving Luke and Rey was good, the Canto Byte stuff could have been trimmed down a little and still got the message across. However, my biggest problem with TLJ was Holdo. Her entire role could have been replaced by Admiral Ackbar and not only would it have felt more earned and justified coming from Ackbar but also the sacrifice near the end would have been more poignant, tragic, and impactful with Ackbar at the helm rather than someone we just met and don’t really have any emotional attachment to going into the movie.

    • @ShanaReviews
      @ShanaReviews 2 роки тому

      I think that might have been the point though with why Holdo was made for the movie.
      I see where you're coming from, but hear me out.
      We were told during the film that they were being tracked through hyperspeed, this may suggest there could have been a traitor onboard giving The First Order intel on how to find them.
      Holdo was meant to be a red haring for the audience, she's new so we the audience don't know her or her history, and it makes her that more suspicious, which is why we spend more time with Po, we're meant to feel as if we should side with him because we only see his point of view
      had Ackbar been the one in place of Holdo it wouldn't have been as suspenseful because we the audience know both Ackbar and Po are on the same side and this subplot with Po would have probably made the audience unintentionally be turned against Po because of how he would treat Ackbar because we would see him as being whinny and insubordinate
      This was the movie trying to make the audience guess and think "who do we trust" IS Po right? or Is he wrong?
      Plus I don't think Ackbar was on the table anyway since his actor had passed away prior to the film which is why I think they killed him off in this one since it was confirmed he was in the same room as Leia when they got hit

    I get what you're saying about the bombers with regard to gravity still existing in space or the the possibility of a bomb propulsion system. But to paraphrase Spock the design of the bomber indicates 2 dimensional thinking. Why do they have to be over the deck of the dreadnought to launch the bombs. Why does the direction of the bomb release have to be perpendicular to the direction of the bomber's flight. Cut the engine, turn the bomber so that bomb-bay door face the target, release the bombs which now carry the momentum of the bomber plus the launch thrust, turn the engine back on and escape. Failing all that put the bomb-bay doors at the front of the ship. And if you must be over you target make your bomber faster. It's like they were designed to be destroyed so we could have that plot point. The new x-wings are amazing compared to the old ones but when it comes to bombers they took all the disadvantages of a y-wing and dialed them to 11.

The dreadnought (specifically referred to as "a fleet killer") by contrast has cannons designed to punch through planetary shields (represented as red energy blasts) and would have destroyed the Raddus had Poe not destroyed it first. Poe saved the fleet and the movie's script is too stupid to acknowledge its own implications. @@Warenai Even if they could withdraw, the imperials could track them, meaning they would have to deal with the dreadnought anyway. Leia just got cold feet and tried to abort the mission too late. Poe did nothing wrong.

      Also doesnt help that the bombing fleet had 0 Y-wings, which is itself another can of worms, and like 4 of them were taken out by a ridiculous chain reaction by a crashing TIE fighter.

      I can't say any of this wrong or invalid, but I can reason that the resistance probably didn't get the funding or resources to built an force to counter The First Order that had built up for at least 2 Decades. The Restoration of the republic would take just as long and military rearmament wasn't a priority. I can't say that it's best reasoning but it what makes sense to me

    • @Wiiranger87
      @Wiiranger87 4 роки тому

      @@Rendo86 no that is the reason. The Sequel Era has it so the New Republic and Empire made a truce, has the remnants placed in a remote side of the galaxy and the New Republic started rebuilding and demilitarizing. Leia thought its really dumb and theres no way the remnants of the Empire will not cause a problem in the future. time goes by, the Empire becomes The First Order, Leia was basically creating her own army labelled as the Resistance but is not as well funded as the Rebellion because The New Republic didnt think the First Order was a threat This also ruined Leia's reputation as people think she is a warmonger (also news broke she is related to Vader). would have been helpful to flesh out that 30 year gap in the movies but nope.

    I didn't hate The Last Jedi. I didn't love it either. So I constantly get crap from both sides. Make no mistake, people who love the movie can be as equally annoying and dismissive of others' opinions as those who hate it. I've never seen a movie provoke this kind of response. Makes you think. If people could take all this passion about the film and harness it for the power of good we would have world peace by now

      Henry Stanley It’s not that they can’t have their own opinions. The problem is that a lot of the haters will disrespect anyone who disagree’s with them or go as far as to harass the creators & actors on social media.
      It’s basically the mentality of “if I can’t enjoy this STAR WARS movie, then nobody can so I’ll ruin it for everyone else.”

  • @CassDaMan1138

    23:04 Okay Linkara, while you bring up a very good point on her not having formulated a plan yet as she needed more information and also them needing to teach him a lesson. However, I think you are understating Poe's Destruction of the dreadnought, while yes the Supremacy is a lot larger and they are currently on the run from the fleet, the Dreadnaught needed to be destroyed or else they would all be dead now instead of at least limping away outside of their cannon range. That Fulmanatrix's cannons reach far and would hit like a truck compared to the turbo lasers on the Supremacy.
    Honestly I feel this is a failing of the script. If they wanted Poe to be held responsible for a disaster caused by him being a cocky hot head high off of his victory against Starkiller base, they could have taken out the dreadnought with minimum casualties, but Poe in a moment of glory seeking and false sense of invincibility could have saw an opening to take Hux's ship and deal an even bigger blow to the First Order with Leia voicing her opinion against it as the dreadnought was the immediate threat to the fleet's safety and THIS action got the bombers killed as maybe more First Order reinforcements arrive and they barely escape into Hyperspace.

    • @AT4W
      @AT4W  4 роки тому

      If he had just left when he was ordered to, there wouldn't be a need to destroy the Dreadnaught. He caused the issue of the fleet being in danger by having them stick around too long.

    • @CassDaMan1138
      @CassDaMan1138 4 роки тому +1

      @@AT4W IDK man...I feel like your missing the tactical point. I mean I get your point, Poe in this case is being a moron that gets people killed. They still are in a screwed situation regardless. However with the Dreadnaught still in play, the fleet that tracked them now has a fleet killing Dreadnaught that could shelling them with it's auto cannons. Also I feel like they were going to track them regardless if they left earlier or not because the technology picks up ships using hyperspace and calculates their trajectory. So in my mind had they left when Leia recalled them it still would have amounted to. "Yay we got away, Good Job distracting them Poe- *Hour maybe later* Ships exiting Hyperspace, Resurgent and Mandator Class! They tracked us?!" It had nothing to do with them jumping away before they could track them, because if that was the case they could have jumped away on fumes as soon as the First Order appeared and sent the Canto Bight shuttle to secure more fuel while they hid.
      But you know... I was watching your other parts of the videos on the subject and you bring up a great point with Poe's story in this, maybe him being "Right", Big air quotes there BTW, for taking out the Dreadnaught is just the film tricking the audience into thinking Poe is in the right when he's not. Like I feel he has a point in taking out the Dreadnaught, but they still end up in a screwed situation just less so. Your supposed to think his ballsy plan will work despite all the odds against it because that's the film subverting the expectation of a Star Wars film. Luke and Han masquerading as Stormtroopers to rescue the Princess on the Deathstar is a ballsy plan that shouldn't work, but it does because it's Star Wars, hell not even going to even touch Luke's crazy plan to rescue Han Solo from Jabba the Hutt.

    The thing about the Resistance bomber isn't just the bombs. Its that they over all make no damned sense. The lore books state that they are literally dropping the bombs and letting magnets pull them down, which should have drawn them to the hull. A hull which is so damned weak, the spalling shrapnel from a shot down TIE takes out THREE OF THEM. And then you realize they are so slow and large, that anti capital ship guns can be fired at them... and that they have no shields... or that its two anti star fighter guns only can point backwards... Seriously, it makes you wonder if Disney mandated no Y or B Wings just so they could milk the nostalgia for Rise... And no its not a spoiler, you can see them in the trailer...

    I want to first off comment that while I personally dislike The Last Jedi in several regards I'll also try my damndest to have respect for people who do like it, so long as people respect my right to dislike it. Further I have nothing but respect for Linkara and his opinions of things even if I personally don't agree with him and this will not change. I believe I'll enjoy this review and I hope to better understand his opinions about The Last Jedi...I also agree with Lewis that it's nice to have new Star Wars movies to make jokes about.
    Also as a final note I'm actually one of those people who generally likes the Prequel trilogy. I don't deny they have their faults but I generally think they're at least decent. In fact Revenge of the Sith is my personal favorite Star Wars movie, followed by Return of the Jedi, and Empire.
