- Ben Affleck's "Air" is an enormously entertaining look behind the scenes of a pop-culture phenomenon: the making of the Air Jordan. He and Matt Damon lead a terrific cast that includes Jason Bateman, Chris Tucker, Chris Messina and Viola Davis. Written by Alex Convery. In theaters Wednesday, April 5.

Already thought I wanted to see this -- am hardly a basketball expert or Nike saga follower, but the talent involved and trailer intrigued me -- and this review sealed the deal. Thanks, Christy and Alonso.
Awesome, let us know what you think!
Yep, Ben knows how to make a story engaging!!
Gotta give props to Michael Jordan saying only Viola Davis can play his mom.
It's a great call!
She's like the Michael Jordan of acting so it makes sense.
This is also the first film from Artist Equity, the company Damon and Affleck created to give more balanced compensation to the people involved in filmmaking.
Yep, such a great idea.
My wife and I saw "Air" yesterday (Fri Apr7) and absolutely loved it. I know you guys mentioned the overabundance of "needle drops" but we adored the effect of the period music throughout the film. Thanks for all you guys do to keep expert movie reviews alive and well on the internet.
Thank you for watching, Dale! Glad you guys loved it.
Saw it today. Loved it!!! Mat Damon is great in it and his performance is the heart and soul of the movie. I really think he is one of the best actors working today. He gets strong support from Ben Affleck as Phil Knight and Viola Davis and Jason Bateman also really good. Great script will probably end up being one of the best films I will see this year and the soundtrack is great!!!
The needle drops and pop culture references are the point! The movie (I think anyway) is how these things have meaning, what is meaning to us. ie, the "function" and "form" that come together to make meaning... I could go on, but I dont want to bore anyone
Thanks for your insights.
Saw this movie today, had a great time! The script is very sharp, crisp, and funny. Pace of movie is snappy - doesn't ever feel boring at all even though we all know the ending. The entire cast is great! Stand out for me is Matt Damon and Chris Messina.
They're both so great in this. Thanks for your thoughts, Jane!
Don't be self conscious. You rock that word Christie. You brought back "tactile" to the English language. Lol.
You two missed the point. The products, music, etc. ties directly to the pop culture themes of the story. This is ultimately about superstar who gets linked directly a product.
This might be the birthplace of "My Brand".
That's an interesting point, thanks for watching.
I loved this movie so much! It reminds me of CODA. Both films are very traditional feel-good movies and there is nothing new about them, but presented with amazingly high quality.
Good point!
It's nothing like CODA. Weird take.
@@williammccormick984 It's exactly like CODA, no differences whatsoever.
Christy and Alonso are back! So excited to see what you guys have to say about upcoming movies. I was mixed on this one.
Thanks Grant! What did/didn't you like about Air?
Just watched Air on Prime. This was fun. I was glad there was a minimum of sports scenes, and the last scene was funny.
SO fun. Glad you caught up with it.
I thought this movie was really good. I don’t think the 80s music references are a problem for people who didn’t grow up in the 80s. It just sounded like “80s music” to me, so it wasn’t that distracting! One thing I appreciated was how the first few shots of the office (including of Damon) looked like they were shot on 1980s film. I did find that the last act of the movie really dragged though. That should have been trimmed. A few jokes too many. But overall it is a smart, funny film.
Glad you enjoyed!
I’m looking forward to seeing this. I really enjoyed Moneyball and like movies about processes too.
Thanks, Kate! Let us know what you think.
Moneyball was quite good. This movie does remind me of that. Good call.
Wednesday is the weekly new release day here in France, and today the new 3 Musketeers movie is the BIG BIG release filling up all the cinemas!! Looks like this one isn't even coming out in cinemas here though!😕 Yes Ben certainly knows how to pull us in and make a movie absorbing, so I'm thrilled to hear he's back to form with this one. I also really appreciate how in his interviews, Ben is very clear that the film is not about how the shoe actually got made, but rather about a totally imagined, fictionalised Hollywood entertaining version of how the shoe got made!! No doubt we'll soon get some great little documentaries on youtube about the real story!
Oh wow, what is the Three Musketeers movie?
@@BreakfastAllDay "Les Trois Mousquetaires : D'Artagnan" directed by Martin Bourboulon, starring François Civil, Vincent Cassel, Eva Green, Vicky Krieps...
I am surprised, I probably should not be with all the talent in front of and behind the camera. An adult comedy with laughs and intelligent snappy dialogue, it is a unicorn which I will accept and watch.
I need my Breakfast all day!😂
Good movie. Very entertaining. Only thing that was distracting was the use of bokeh and a lot of shots being out of focus. I also agree that they overdo it with the 80’s references. The beginning of the movie is so cliche, showing Regan, The 1984 comercial by Apple, etc etc, as you guys said, yes we know! Lol. Otherwise I agree with everything you said. Very good movie.
Thanks, Juan!
This is a movie I had absolutely no interest in at all, but this review made me interested.
That's great! Let us know.
I couldn't stop playing Night Ranger by sister Christian from the trailer.
I knew the needle drops would be brought up in this review
It's one of our favorite topics!
After watching this, I watched an old WTF recap of The Americans (currently watching season 5) and Alonso mentioned Mr Mister in both videos. I thought that was a crazy coincidence
That's funny!
Speaking of needle drops. I was 10 in 1969 and I could not sit through Apollo 10 1/2. To me it was just a list (one thing after the other) of things that were culturally relevant for the time. People younger that that age seem to find it fascinating for some reason. Similarly, the needle drops here might work for an audience not around in the '80s. Anyway....
I'm curious: In Air, does Spike Lee show up?
He does not.
I saw the movie. It was very good. Really good performances, direction, and of course Viola Davis! 8/10
Thanks, Peter!
Sold! Off to the movies!
Let us know how you like it!
Wouldn't go to the theater for this, for sure, but I would definitely stop and get sucked into it if I ran into it on streaming.
It's very good! Hope you enjoy.
😩 this is exactly the movie you WANT to see in the theaters if you enjoy it. These mid budget films that dominated the industry until 2010 are barely getting financing these days.
Michael Jordan is the human who represents the second coming of Christ.
The jumpman logo is everywhere and that sets the deal for God.
I feel like I know your reviews so well. It's like I know what you're both gonna say. Lol.😊
We hope to surprise you sometimes!
Favorite 🎥 of the year so far!!!
Glad you loved it!
Madame, it is impossible for Sister Christian to be a distraction. 🤘🤘🤘
It's a lot!
Sister Christian seems to be the go to 80’s song. Boogie Nights, Friday the 13th remake, Glee now Air. 😂
I think the movie is exceptional. But I can't figure out if it's just virtuoso or if it thinks it's better than it is. I'm going with the former
Glad you enjoyed!
its better than we think it is
You didn't say anything was "tactile" today. Lol.
I believe the Tangerine Dream piece was originally from 1984's HEARTBREAKERS
There might be multiple Tangerine Dream tracks included in the film, but at least one of them is "Love on a Real Train" from RISKY BUSINESS. Thanks for watching!
@@BreakfastAllDay Turns out there were 7 TD pieces. I knew I heard "Breathing the Night Away."
Is this a movie where you must have prior knowledge of the subject to enjoy the film? I know very little about basketball or Michael Jordan.
Not at all!
So what movie in the next 12 months do you think will be important enough for the whole What the Flick gang back together in one review???
Gosh, that would be tough. But it's a nice idea.
Will be interesting to see how well this does at the box office with a 99% score
It's extremely crowd-pleasing.
It used the music in the same excessive manner as the "Bumblebee" Transformers movie. The songs were just thrown in for scenes where people walked into a room and for a few seconds, nothing thematic about them. The first one was an annoying anachronism.
dude took a swing with that makeup comment. Good job he hit
It was a genuine compliment.
@@BreakfastAllDay yeah I know. I was mainly joking 🙂
Wow we can't even get a Michael Jordan movie set in the 90s - 80s nostlgia is just getting rude at this point!
Plenty of nostalgia to mine!
Mad Men was a super stylized show about a SUPER uninteresting topic. This looks like that
This is not uninteresting lmao
...or a period show about marketing
Google is messing with their algo, lots of small channels popping up on my feed. I burned all my NIKE gear, so not interested in any support.
Why dod you burn it?

Movies Have Become so Silly and Dumb Over The Years That Many of us Grasp at Decent to Good Movies and Call Them "Great"...Our Sense of Quality Has Diminished...Air Was a Good Movie But Also Very Overrated
