Good stuff. I'm tinkering with SPs and learning as I go. The corrosion in that area seems to be common. This is the 4th video I've seen with this problem and others have reported it as well.
Man! Bought an SP and hand the exact issue! Troubleshot it exactly the way you did and made the same repair and voila! SP started charging again! Did some minor trimming where the speaker sits due to the wire being a bit thick but you can’t notice any of the trimming. EXCELLENT video!
Local game store gave me a broken SP board to mess around with. Just the bare board and battery it would not power on. Charger would do it's normal thing with the quick red light so the board isn't completely dead. I checked all the fuses and didn't know where to go from there. Watched your video and my board has a different layout but the components are the same. Mine didn't have a ton of corrosion like yours but there wasn't continuity from F2 to D1! Patched it similarly to yours and boom! It works. I suspect that under that cartridge slot traps any and all liquids and it could be a common break point from misuse or dropping the SP in water. Now I can order a bunch of replacement parts and I'll have a working SP for cost of parts! Not bad if you plan on modding one anyway.
I am trying to solve a similar issue. I did have the same break in continuity you had, no visible corrosion anywhere I can see. I put a jumper wire in between d1 and f2. Now I get a charging light but still no power trying to turn it on. Just gonna keep going through looking for any breaks anywhere but not sure where to go from there.
@@MitchCairns Ya the power switch is working. I tested continuity in the on and off positions and am getting the same as my working sp. Somewhere I'm assuming there is either a bad component or another break where something is not getting power. I'm just slowy working my way around the board checking continuity between components where power should be coming in and seeing if anything is broken. It's a long and tedious process.
Hi, i have a problem with my gba sp, it’s a ags 101 model, the charging light is not working while charging, the gameboy still charge normal but the light is not turn on orange, it’s bothered my a lot cause I don’t know when the gameboy is done charge or not, can you help me to find a way to fix it ? Thank you.
Mitch, excellent video! I am having issues with my GBA SP Board. I am getting no charging and no power. I tried using another fully charged sp battery but still no power. I have continuity at the f1 and f2 fuses. Any thoughts or suggestions?
I think it would be best for you to hop in the discord server linked in the description-- either I or someone else can provide some pointers to help you troubleshoot. Corrosion under the cart slot is possible and it can cause this no power issue.
Hey, I got a gba sp that won't turn on and it's not the baterry cause it's been replace with a new one. What do you recommend to do, I'm a beginner in this:)
Hello! Something similar happens to me. When you turn on the console, the green led turns on and turns off immediately. When charging, the orange led lights up correctly and the battery in another console works fine, I have also checked the fuses and coils and everything is correct. Do you know what it could be? Thank you!
Good job dude. Why didn’t you use a toothbrush with IPA for after-soldering clean? I think it’s better than q-tips since it doesn’t leave cotton particles behind that may interrupt with the circuit.
Cotton is non-conductive and wouldn't be a huge deal. I may have taken a toothbrush to the board at some point off camera but this is too long ago for me to remember properly. I do have a soft bristle toothbrush I keep on my tool rack for this reason and it's a good suggestion! Thanks for stopping by

Yup it's a little moisture trap!
just came by to say that i had the exact same issue and i fixed it thanks to this video. way to go mitch! thank you so much!

Does anyone know the model of fuse F2(the one with “33” on it)?

Watched two different repair videos on this issue, still no luck with mine. This charging circuit seems to be the most finicky part of these SPs.
What kind of wire do you use? I bought some but its flimsy snd delicate, yours seemed like a single core and stiffer.

I'd check the continuity from the power switch or even try bridging the power switch to see if it comes on then.

@@nightxxowl1215 any progress? I am having a similar issue
@@joeypm1 Me too!
@@ShadowZero1980 do you have component L1 and L2 (L1 is missing for me, I think it might be my issue)

Cool! Finished watching this video, I’ll be looking for part 2 and more on gba sp systems

@@MitchCairns Anyhow such cotton remains can retain dirt particles! But yeah, great video, keep them up. Subscribed!
Did you ever do a follow up on the gba so with the lingering sound issue
Sorry no I didn't do a follow-up... the solution was just scraping the gold pads on the board that come into contact with the speaker :)
Ok othanks

Did I see water damage? The water sticker looks pink
There may have been some moisture. I did not see any signs of corrosion beside the one via I repaired.
lo provee y tampoco puedo revivir mi sp
I think you need to zoom more..
