I was riding home from work many, many moons ago when Smooth Operator came on my radio. I was immediately captured by her voice as well as the band. I couldn't place her voice, but it was very different, refreshing, seductive.
I love her. When I first started working with developmentally disabled adults and I got sent to a difficult house, playing Sade tapes helped to keep me serene and reassured. Much later, in August 2001, my sister and I went to a concert of hers in Baltimore. It was my last great memory of America before 9-11. More recently, she's been trying to help movies. A Wrinkle in Time was not good, and Widows was so-so, but Sade's songs for those movies endure on their own. She gets the strange compliment of people telling her than they were conceived to her music. She just turned 66 and I am as smitten by her as ever.
