- Did you know that the British East India Company promoted marriages between Britishers and Indians during the 1600s? This gave rise to a lesser known community in India known as the Anglo Indians. I explain their history, their rise, how they fought against the oppression by British and how they went on to get reservation in the parliament of India.

I know of an Anglo Indian friend who was working in the Gulf in a hotel in the 80s. A British lady said that in India there is so much poverty that beggars keep touching, when begging money. This friend gave a fitting reply, "We have to thank the Britishers for that". He took up for India.

My father was working in railways and we were living in railway colony. So I had a lot of opportunity to mingle with Anglo Indian community
A peaceful, well behaved community, retaining it's own culture, language, dress , religion etc. I loved the community, and indebted to them for all the help I received from them. Most of community members have migrated to Australia and other countries and I
hardly get a chance to meet them now.I really miss them . But old memories of my childhood association keeps coming every now and then.

Wonderful description of events. Thank you for sharing. I wrote book "The Last Anglo-Indians" spurred by my ancestor's story in India. My mother arrived in America soon after Indian Independence. Today, my mother is considered one of the oldest Anglo-Indians in America (in her mid 90s). Please let me know if you would like to interview her for your next video.

My grandparents were Anglo-Indian. We still have family in Chennai and Bangalore. Estimated there are 350 - 500,000 Anglos dotted across India. Most have blended into modern life with ease.

Thanks Dhruv for bringing out such a wonderful story of my Anglo-Indian Community.Since 1971 the All India Census was compiled only based under Heads of Religion but in 2011 ,a fraction of 296 Anglo-Indians were erroneously complied under the head of a non-existent-"Anglo-Indian Religion",instead of compiling this 296 with the 4 Lakhs who were enumerated under the Christian Religion in the same 2011 Census.

The Anglo Indian teachers are an exceptional class. Their mannerisms and affection towards the children is incomparable because they leave the politics of class, community, caste and religion aside. Cheers to the Anglo Indians who taught our children.
That's not true we had a quacky librarian in school ,she always used to poke our pronounciation and accent in English and she treated kids very badly and she always talked badly to parents whose English was not so good...and I am from Kolkata

Kazipet in Warangal district of Telangana is also another example of Anglo Indian community. Kazipet Railways started operations around 1908 and most of the Divers were British and married to local people. This community was very popular during 70's and 80's and Kazipet was also referred as mini England because most of the people could communicate in English. There's a Roman Catholic church and currently the old structure is renovated with new structure. Thanks for the video on this topic.

I'm an Anglo-Indian. My dad is Anglo and mom is of Portuguese-Dutch descent. You have covered everything very well except when you said there are just 296 Anglo-Indians in India. The place where I live is an Anglo-Indian settlement and there should be about 80 Anglo Indian families in my city. Apart from that, your video was very informative. Thank for doing this video.

Thanks Dhruv for bringing this niche topic to the forefront. I feel Anglo Indians have contributed to the development of both British and Indian diaspora. Yet they have not been fully accepted by either of them. Being an Anglo Indian myself, i understand the cultural pain in being a minority community. Hope your video raises awareness towards our issues.

I went to a convent school in Jhansi, where a lot of my school teachers and classmates were Anglo indians in late 90s, Reminds of me the days when their grannies would come to drop them off to school in skirts and wait till assembly chatting in English a contrast from out dadis in sarees and Bundelkhandi, most of them would have left us by now, god bless them :)

My favourite teacher was an Anglo Indian. She single handedly improved my English. I had Anglo friends. Many of whom left india after 10th. Studied in boys Christian school. Yeah they had a tough image about them.

I studied in La Martiniere College, we have our history dating back to 1800’s
In 1940’s Indians were allowed to study after British went. We have most our teachers who are Anglo Indians & till date a lot of students study who are Anglo Indian. Proud to be a Martinian ❤
