HARLEY COMPENSATOR Noise Repair

  • TERRIBLE noises coming from my primary a mile from home! Finishing an Iron Butt ride of over 1,000 miles in a single day & I think the heat caused my Compensator to have issues. Likely the Springs. Harley Ultra Ltd 2010. Pulling Clutch in/out & shifting with clutch pulled in gave weird disturbing sounds! Bought a Darkhorse Man 'O War compensator and installed. Harley changed the design of the compensator from my model year forward 3 different times due to serious wear & durability issues. Their official line is that this is a "Wear" part. I'm thinking that if I have to do a $1,000+ repair every 10,000 miles this is unquestionably a design flaw - as evidenced by their series of design improvements.

If it becomes noisey , you might consider a recluse clutch with the metal spacers to stop clutch rattle in your basket. If your still getting noise replace chain tensioner with a spring loaded Hayden . The darkhorse compensator is a good bit of kit but because it’s tight it exposes all the factory tolerances on other part’s designed for the factory compensator. Iv been down this path with my 2010 RG. All the best

The primary chain adjustment I believe is measured raising the chain upward not up & down combined. When torquing the clutch basket it has left hand threads so you need a torque wrench that can torque in both directions not all torque wrenches can do that. I would have left the auto primary chain adjustment alone until I had broken loose the compensator bolt and the clutch basket bolt cause it would taken up a lot of chain slack
Using your plastic wedge works good to keep the primary from moving I have one similar to yours.
Great video you explained things very good and not to fast.

Good product . But you’ll have more noise with it . Neutral rattle, clutch basket rattle because it will notch your clutch basket then your Auto tensioner will start to click. Here’s how I fixed those problems with the MOW unit. Hayden spring tensioner and recluse clutch with shims . Transmission rattle was still there so I changed it for the new box witch have spring loaded gear to eliminate neutral rattle . Transmission was still good ,I just changed the cartridge out when motor was out . Transmission only rattled in neutral so just annoying really. I could have left it

How did you refill the oil if you didn’t remove the derby cover

You got me! I did pull the derby cover to both fill the oil but also to do the second clutch adjustment. Good catch!

The auto chain tensioner is bad news. I had one malfunction, over tighten the primary chain, putting stress on the engine sprocket bearings and trashing the inner primary bearing. It didn`t do the trans mainshaft bearing any favors either. I traded that bike in and eliminated the auto tensioner on the new bjke. Harley can`t make an adequate comp sprocket and that`s a disgrace. I`m back to a `90 FXSTS. Evos rule.

This week I plan to pull my primary & check the auto tensioner. I suspect it may be too tight

I've always been a die hard evo person. The 2 local harley dealerships to me refer to me as the "evo kid". Although I'm far from being a kid, it is what it is. Recently I ran into a killer deal on a 2016 streetglide and the ol lady likes new shiny things so, I did the terrible thing and bought it. I road this 2016 about 400 miles. I got off the 2016 and sat on my 98 ultra. It felt like I got off a Honda and got on a harley. I was going to wait and see if I liked the new bike then make a decision on selling the 98' evo. No way in hell am I selling my evo bikes. I have 3 of thm currently and I'll buy more. I have no interest in the 99 and up bikes what so ever.

Nice video! Need to inspect my '09 UC, hot starts & hot idle sounds rough. 41k mi, didn't like hearing the 'dremel the case' to remove the rotor. You did it the right way!! How are you liking the Manowar?

You can remove the rotor without pulling the inner primary, and no you don't need to file the edge of the outter primary, people do it that way if they dont want to remove the clutch, but other than that how is that new comp doing, been kicking around the idea of getting one myself

Thanks for your feedback! I am loving the Dark Horse & have now put on about 7,000 miles. Still starts well and responds crisply. Noise is reduced especially on long HOT rides. Before when I'd ride 500+ miles on a 90-100 degree day the noise at the end of the ride was scary! Just yesterday I put on a few hundred miles in 95 degree heat with no noise or issues. Clearly the modification that comes with the kit, a oil directing insert to the outer primary, has dramatically improved things. That and replacing the plate springs with the Dark Horse inserts which are built into the unit.

My bad! Honestly, I didn't think anyone would watch the video & failed to check for comments! Anyway, slightly better torque, MUCH better starting - immediate crank vs. cough/start. Best of all, when I do an "Iron Butt" 1,000 miles in a day ride, it doesn't o reheat & start whining.
