This was a very important video, which shows that even very experienced outdoorspeople change their plans to reduce risk in dangerous conditions.
If more people did this, we would see far fewer of those stories about ill prepared adventurers who put their own lives and those of their rescuers at risk due to poor decisions.
Thanks for sharing, Darwin!
Thanks for watching & your feedback! 🤙
Yes! More trip debriefs! I like the video format where you have split screen with the map and little you down in the corner. onX looks really good...its very cool they have such a detailed interface for the computer.
Trip debriefs give viewers the rational that a seasoned backpacker uses through diverse conditions and increases my confidence when planning trips of the sort. Thanks for your hard work Darwin
Thanks for watching! Glad you enjoy em'!
I like these videos! And as a Canadian in the prairies I especially appreciate that it was actually cold for your winter trip!! Well done and thank you for sharing ❤
Definitely dig the trip analysis videos. Keep them coming!
Love these detailed debriefs. Please keep them coming!
I like geeking out on the logistics and how you solve things that don't go your way!
That was great these vids are my fav content from you in a while, feels like a friend coming over and telling me about the trip!
There are no old, bold winter sports-people. Well maybe a few very, very lucky ones. But seriously, we've seen too many videos on people who made the wrong choices.
Thanks for demonstrating the right choice--changing plans--and showing the process throughout as well as the right gear for extreme conditions during a beautiful winter adventure.
And congratulations on your second time ice-climbing! ❄
As a previous wilderness canoe trip guide and current ICU staff, I appreciate the focus here on flexibility in trip planning to focus on safety 😂 😂
great video! would love to see you discuss avalanche safety in more depth, something that I often feel is missing in winter backpacking videos.
Great video! Love the use of onx backcountry!
These are my favorite types of videos I've seen you do so far, very useful resource to see what works and what doesn't and why!
Thanks, I'm glad you found it useful! 🤙
Word
You got out there, got some good experience in, and stayed safe - sounds like a good trip! But it's interesting to hear exactly how you changed your plans and still get the details for both planned versions because often the stories about trips gloss over so many details!
Thanks for coming out, again! Less mileage and less altitude than we wanted, but you got a good gear shakedown. Will have another chance this late winter/early spring!❄️🥶🏔️
Yeah Buddy! Let's do it!
Safe back to the vehicle to fight another day! 😂
@@DarwinOnthetrail Friendly advice, don’t go to Pakistan.
I’ve been corrected that Berthoud supposed to be pronounced as Bertoud. Who knows? I’ve been to James peak a few times but a different route and never in snow. I really appreciate all the information you shared here. I think I get information overload trying to plan a trip so I tend to go to places I’ve been more than I’d really like. Met you back a few years ago at Mesa Verde NP and got a pic with you while my wife was down on a tour of the dwellings. I was injured at the time so I waited at the overlook. You were very kind and my wife was very jealous. Take care.
Glad you were both safe. Nature does not recognise bravado and egos.
great debrief! I'm glad you were ok in that tent. Definitely consider the expedition version of that tent, much better wind and cold performance.
This trip debrief is great. I'd love to see more of this type of trip discussion concerning planning and how that changes. I'm also a bike packer and would love to see you get on the bike more! :-P
Word
Thank you for your time doing the video's. Could you please do some on what not to take. 😊
Thanks for a great debrief video. I like to see the breakdown of what was going on to make you decide what to do. Real time information is crucial for these extreme conditions and plans have to be altered as needed to make safe decisions. Thank You Darwin!
Glad to hear the stove worked well for you.
I was up by James Peak with the 4Runner last summer. I know that area too well. Forty years ago I was on the continental divide in my Jeep, and the trail gave way. I ended up driving down into the valley that you had planned to hike up from the East Portal, close to the same path.
Fascinating. Yes, love these trip debriefs and showing the trail plan and deviations and why.
Really interesting to see the thought that goes into a trip like this. Love seeing how you actually plan trips like this.
When I wore a younger man's clothes . I couldn't wait till we had an ice storm or extremely cold temps Id hit the pinhoti trail by my house head up to dugger mtn. Spend a few days in the cold . That's thirty years ago. Now I'll just watch you do it 😅
I really liked it. Planning/trip debriefs might not be as useful for longer, more established routes that have thousands of videos on them already. But getting into the mindset of shorter, ad hoc trips is very useful. And motivating, to just get out there and do something.
Great video! I liked this style of video.
I enjoy watching how you plan your routes!
Love the addition of the map. Really helps complete the picture.
Just what I needed - a Darwin video!! Haven’t watched yet but already excited to put it on the TV. Fan since the early early vids. Thanks for sharing Nick 🏆
I like this format! Seeing the planning and then the execution (including changes to the plan) is helpful. Info as to how you progressed your skills to this point would be appreciated. For example, did you learn climbing at a climbing gym then outdoors? Did you already know people who taught you climbing, rope skills, etc. What resources did you use for avalanche safety knowledge? I'm interested in building some of these skills, but at the rate I'm going, I might never make it out there!
Love the trip debrief
I'd like to see some pretrip planning. I find that I end up watching hours of YT researching a trip and as I do, I get side tracked and come up with 16 more trips I want to do. onX has been helpful, but there's so much more such as travel and getting from airports to trailheads and back.
Great video 👍❄️
Ready for another video keep cranking them out. LOL
Love the repoert. Re stove. Did you have to turn the canister upside down to get the fuel to flow. Or place the cannister on a pad to insulate fro.the snow? Did the stove sink into the snow or did you have a platform for the burner to sit on?
I loved getting a peek into the planning process! More, please!
Thanks for taking us along. Hope you took some Whiskey to warm up! Love the logistics.
Nice video! Always gotta be ready to change in the winter!! In December I was in Denali National Park. Plan was 10 miles over 3 day with max elevation on 6000 feet. Ending up being 14 miles with max elevation on 3000 feet... called the week before, snow report i got was a melt with a crust. With I tryed to gain height off main trail I hit 3 feet on fluffy snow and a small from layer under that 😂😂 being solo it was too hard to gain elevation.... trip was still a total blast and trip of a lifetime!
I’ve been enjoying your trip debriefs a lot. It covers your process in trip planning and explains the gear required as well as out lining your trip objectives. This particular debrief where you had to adapt to the change of weather was fantastic, instead of getting emotional. You instead pivoted to still achieve the objectives whilst remaining safe.
Pairing the mapping and footage of your adventures was excellent.
I was worried that you might get backlash from gatekeepers to keep locations private to minimise future crowding. Especially with the reduction of finance towards park rangers and would like your thoughts on that.
Your trip debriefs adds more depth to your videos. Mixture with storytelling and documentaries. It’s really raised the bar of your content. I do like your gear videos but I think over time without adventures, gear videos just becoming too commercial. Bringing back to the key points of living vicariously to your adventures is where I primarily enjoy experience your content.
Another awesome video Darwin. Has a lot of information, and is very in depth. Grand slam of a video. Hiking videos in the Adirondacks would be sweet.
Very exciting, cool to see the planning but would love just a bit more of the journey too. Maybe just some stills.
Love this content Nick !
i think the Trekkertent Saor from Scotland would make a fantastic winter tent at quite a reasonable weight. maybe be worth a look? they are not a particularly well known tent.
Omg I did not realize the slope aspect of the app!! Thank you! Knew finally subscribing to you would pay off lol😊
Yeah, it's definitely a game changer in these types of environments
For those that are interested the passenger trains that use the Moffat tunnel are the Amtrak California Zephyr and the seasonal Winter Park Express.
I’d like to hear more about the stove and mostly how the canned gas worked. I’ve never really took the liquid fuel/stove approach. But don’t get out that much in the winter but plan too. We actually had winter in Pennsylvania so far this year.
00:17 waittttt a minute, that's not the X-T4 + 23mm f1.4
Hi Darwin. Love your videos!
I am considering a PCT thru hike or at least 3 month trek either this season or next and and looking at your ranger and space ranger backpacks. I am an experienced adventurer but looking to go more minimalist and ultralight. Do you have any advice on which model I should go for?
Thanks!
If you’re NOT a total minimalist that has a base weight of under 10lbs, I would suggest the Space Ranger.
The Space Ranger is built more for long term trail comfort, with a removable frame system & full padded hipbelt. Really designed for 90% of thru-hikers. It’s been my go to pack recently & will be for everything I have coming up in the future.
The Ranger is a 35L frameless minimalist pack that “can” add a hipbelt, but was really designed to go hipbelt less, hence the “under 10lb” base.
Hope that helps! 🤙
@@DarwinOnthetrail Thank you for the advice! Hope to see you on the trail at home in Australia one day!! 🤣
I use the Big Agnes Copper Spur UL 2 for all my summer and shoulder season trips. Great tent. Take a bit longer to set up than your single-walled backpacking tents!
Good video, I’m about to get out for some winter trips in Cali.
Are you going to make a video of the actual trip or just do the debrief- I like the debrief but also would have like to see more of the outting.
As a logistic nerd... it bothers me that north wasn't pointing up. 🤣
I believe the only words are; Dude and Sweet! 👍
Looks like a great area to explore in the snow- especially with the steps you took to check slope angles. Question about the Scarpas... since switching to wide toe box shoes, "normal" shaped footwear doesn't feel right anymore. How are the Scarpa's fit and why did you choose them over other brands.
Do you follow a specific training plan to get mountain fit for the Karakorum?
Amazing video
So you were originally to be in the Indian Peaks area near Nederland? BTW, Why did you use a tent with a MESH inner for winter?
How’s the tent standing up against stronger winds or snow loads?
Moffet tunnel comes out at winter park
Have you considered the Big Agnes Copper Spur Expedition tent?
I haven't. actually didn't know about that model. Main reason I took this one out is because I've been testing a bunch of the most popular backpacking tents to see how they handle all around. 🤙
There is also the bikepacking, or the platinum versions or the other version I couldn't even mention. Crazy how many versions of the Copper Spur there are.
Pepe Silvia?
Bellissimo video, interessante e istruttivo. Great video, interesting and informative.
Thank Ya! 🤙
As an European I would like to have the temperature in both Fahrenheit (I guess it was Fahrenheit this video?) and please also in Celsius.
We do it a little different here than you do😊
overnight low at camp: -3F to -19C/ windchill at the summit: -11F to -24C/ windchill at the camp we decided not to do: -25F to -32C
I got ya next time! 🤙
Similarly, I would like all dates to be in the Arabic calendar, and all prices stated in Ukrainian hryvnia.
@@ShortGuysBetaWorks 🥶
Indeed.
What outdoor research jacket is that
I totally forgot to ad it to that Gear List, but just updated it 😉
@ thanks Darwin!
Very upset you didn’t stop in Denver for a beer with me. Maybe next time.
Next time for sure! 🍻
@@DarwinOnthetrail anytime. I owe you more than one for all the good information.
Does On X Backcountry include Canada?
Sure does! I'm actually routing out a trip right now up there for March! 😉
@@DarwinOnthetrail Awesome! Thanks. I'm in the Kootenays of B.C. if I can assist you otherwise I'll look forward to your debrief on that trip!
I love these debrief videos, I know the reviews pay the bills but they get boring.
As someone who has lived through over 30 Montana's winters, I don't really understand the appeal of winter backpacking. Yeah, I like skiing, snow-shoeing, etc., but spending a sub-zero night in a tent is certainly not my idea as "fun". That said, I respect those, like Darwin, who apparently do, especially with regard to winter outdoor survival skills. So, thanks, Darwin, for suffering on our behalf.
Are those Altai Hok skis behind you? If so, what do you think of them?
See my previous video. I talk a little more in depth about them 😉
