I’m putting up a DX Commander classic in my yard. I have a 65’ tower I was given, but my town wants me to jump through hoops to install it. Probably cost me $2500 to get it off the ground! I ma at some point just do it. This was a phenomenal video. Very succinct and informative! Thank you. -73- W1KPS

I like your attitude. Make do with what you have. I have been very successful with resonant wire antennas and QRP power. Have worked you guys from the states hundreds of times. Operating a radio station from a small garden is certainly a challenge, I know that only too well from past experience. But I'm glad to say that over the years I have worked many hams, so it can be done with a reasonably efficient antenna system. In the end after much experimentation, I settled for a 120' Doublet with both ends bent down vertically. Works incredibly well on 80 and 40, into the States and Russia on CW under good conditions. So yes it can be done, but of course propagation conditions will play a big part.

Nice video. I don't have or want to own several 100' towers. However, one 50' rohn 45 tower would be nice. But thank the Lord for nature's living towers (trees) in my back yard for stringing any length of wire.
Many Uk properties are rectangular with the garden behind the house. Yet people stick to obsolete G5RV and dipoles instead of end-connected antennas which cover more bands without tuner and don't have feedlines hanging across the garden
Small backyard here and I live in a HOA Golf Community in Florida so no towers. I found EFHW 67' up into a Pine tree (Sloper) gives me good results. Its a high power home-brew 3x52 mix ferrite cores 49:1 auto transformer. Running only 100w. I get 40m, 20m, 17m, 15m, 12m, 10m, and 6m. Some bands I need the built in ATU. I'm looking at building something to give me 80m, 60m and 30m. I would love to try and fit in 160m but that's going to be a BIG challenge ;)
All good suggestions. My garden is small but had good performance from a 20m band HWEF with my homebrewed 49:1 unun suspended on a 12 meter telescopic windsock pole. I will definitely try cutting some wire for the 40m band. Half up the pole, half sloping down. Would that still work?
With your experience you should do a video on stealth antennas if you already haven't. I am currently running .28 end fed magnet wire and running 500 watts through it with almost no RFI problems thanks to nice balanced counterpoise wires indoors. With a balun I might eliminate any RFI altogether.

And I can't find any concrete evidence of harmful rf radiation at 40 meters even at that power level. Of course I don't run that power during all of my operating times.

I've room only 20m dipole and no trees around :( I'll try some kind of vertical (or L shape bend dipole, a horizontal V?) based on collapsible poles and just force it to long bands with a tuner. Any antenna is better than no antenna and making a descent antenna seems difficult enough with my limitations.
Quick question. I have my coax grounded at both the antenna side, and also the radio side. Would that cause a problem using the transformer for 20m and 10m or would I have to rework it so I disconnect the coax ground at the antenna when the transformer is switched in? Thanks for the video.
Hello Sir !! im using a g5rv without a tuner running 10 watts out put power no tuner 2-0ne swr ,if i use a tuner and increase the power to 100 watts and clean up the swr its not going to help signal strenth is it ?is it dangerous to do this ? thanks for videos!!
Hi, Thank you for the video. I don’t want to sound critical but I have to disagree with your strong statement where you firmly say not to use a random wire. Random wires with a 9:1 unun offer very simple and effective way for people to get on the air. I have used such a system with exceptional results since the early eighties all be it with a good ATU. I agree there are better options but you can’t ignore the value of a random wire. Paul

Noise is the problem, go portable changed the way I do HF, band is ok worked Brazil , US , VK and Africa all out of a car .

End Fed Wire at 7:14 is food for thought. I was thinking trapped half wave dipole for 40 and 20, but I can fit the EFW idea into the same length

My QTH isn’t too good - s5+ noise on 40m. For me, going mobile has been a really good solution so far.
I forgot to mention that these EFHW antennas are not QRP, but can do at least 100w SSB. Some versions are designed for higher power.

44 ft doublet as inverted v or efhw 66 ft as an inverted L both cover 40-10 and fit in my v small garden 73

You don't need to change anything. The transformer coax connection is not affected whether or. to the coax is earthed. 73 Peter

Tony that power increase will make a big difference to signals you transmit. Your receive performance will be unchanged. 73 Peter
