  • A quick video DIY guide on how to identify and replace the brake switch on a newer model 2014 Mercedes-Benz Sprinter 316CDI (as well as other MB vehicles).
The brake switch is a common component to fail, and will cause ESP error warnings on the dash, as well a preventing the use of cruise control until fixed. Ideally you should use a code reader to identify the cause of the ESP error, as it can be caused by the brake switch, ABS sensor, ECU and a few other things.
If it is the brake switch, you are in luck as it is a quick, easy and relatively inexpensive part to replace!
Make sure you remove the switch, get the part number and order the correct shape and size part as they do vary between year models.

Any time we have brake caliper lock up on sprinter van I would replace the slider pins as the plastic guide on the steel slider (one plastic guide on each side top side ) wear hence the caliber is not being pushed out square with the disc which cause it to lock up

Glad it helped. Not quite the fancy video we usually like to upload, but filming it was an afterthought when we realised that there wasn't much on YT at the time detailing this little fix.

My sprinter van has decided to stop working properly and this might be the reason why. Whenever I start the car up the yellow "P" keeps blinking for some seconds before giving a solid non-blinking P light/ Until it turns "solid" the lever is not free to move, when I'm touching it softly I can feel as if it is trying to give it free but it does not. Do you think it is because of a faulty brake switch or something else? A collegue thought it had to do with the level of automatic transmission fluids. There are no warning/error messages just a blinking P next to the lever before going in normal operation, for the rest there everything is running like clockwork.

Not sure buddy.. sounds like a pain though! Give your local Mercedes-Benz workshop a call and see what they can tell you. The brake switch is a cheap and easy thing to replace.. so you could always just try replacing it and see what happens? Might do the trick, might not. Good luck!

your master cylinder is broken, and the vacuum pump that connects that brake cylinder
