DENJIRO: Actually, bamboo is perfect for starting a fire. It’s surprisingly easy. First, I’ve split a piece of bamboo in half and made a small hole and notch in it. I’ve now fixed the piece of bamboo.

DENJIRO: Now, using a larger piece of bamboo, I’ll show you the moment the fire starts. By splitting the bamboo in two and making it into an arch shape, the shaved bamboo falls through the hole and collects at the bottom. When shavings that are hot from friction accumulate, the temperature rises, and a fire starts. Furthermore, the tinder used to make the fire even bigger was bamboo as well. Bamboo fibers run vertically, so you get a lot of long scraps. As you can see, bamboo is great for starting a fire.
The key is to use a piece of bamboo that’s dry.
