Great video this answered all my questions on how to mount a screen without using emt piping. The extra 2" for bungee between frame was also a question I needed answered. Starting to build a house and doing a basement build. Great job and thanks for the help!
By far the best DIY frame build instructions. Thanks for this! Just finished my basement build following this and it came out excellent. I need to figure out my screen tension to get the ball to drop dead on impact. I used premium raw material with tarp clips and the frame is super sturdy without the bulky enclosure look.
Awesome video. I’m really glad I found this because every other video shows the channel struts or angle iron mounted on all sides. I’m going to have one side floating similar to yours and I was concerned it might not work. Super pumped. I’m going to be building mine out this evening and can’t wait.
I don’t have this set up anymore but I’d say $2k for Skytrak, $1k for tgc2019, $800 for the screen, around $1000 for the short throw projector, and a couple hundred for frame materials and bungees. So maybe $5k
I am following your lead here.... Bought the struts.... Questions... Your bottom fixed to the concrete...you refer to lag bolts.....they look like screws..... What is your aspect ratio at 8 x 14....? What projector did you use and what was its native aspect ratio? How did you attach the ball bungees to the top rail...as it was sealed off on one side, unlike the side strutts which were open? Thanks.
I used concrete screws for the bottom strut to the concrete with washers. I don’t remember the thickness but they were thicker than a normal screw. My screen is 8x14 which is a 16:9 ratio and my projector can do 16:9 or 4:3 but I keep it set to 16:9. At the top and bottom rails I placed the bungee through the hole and out the hole next to it.
Depends on if the projector is short throw or standard. Short throw you can have it closer. Standard would go further back. Mine was short throw at it was less than 10’ back from the screen and I have 9’ ceilings so less than that.
Thank you so much for taking the time to video everything and explain in such detail for us, I’m basically going to copy everything you did I ordered a carls premium 8x14 anything you would do differently? Maybe make the frame an inch or so smaller so the screen has less tension and bounce back? Thanks again
Great video!! I'm am looking to do this type of setup with the Carl's Place 7.7 x 10 premium screen. Based on your video, it sounds like I would need a frame width of 10' 6". Would you recommend buying 6 strut frames, using two 5'3" struts for the top and two for the bottoms or just buy 4 struts and use the extra scraps to get the additional 6" on the width. I'd rather do it right the first time. Thanks!
I personally would go 2” wider around, not 3”. I found that my screen is a little too tight and causes my ball to bounce back more. Yes, I also like the strut frames. I would get extra and limit how many strut seems you have. It’s more durable this way.
Awesome video- seems much easier going this route than going with the built in DIY option from Carls getting the same result. Any feedback yet on the tension adjustment? I have read using a cord every other eye hole works for most people.
I agree, back when I had this setup I did get slightly longer bungees and ran them every other grommet and that worked better but try different things to see what works best for you.
@@DieselLegiance do you have any advice on choosing a screen size? I have 13 feet of width and 10 feet of height clear. I have seen 2 schools of thought. 1. Maximize width and choose a height to get a standard ratio or 2. Maximize wall space and sacrifice possible dead space and/or dampened resolution. I will be hitting 8 feet from screen so perhaps 8 feet height (13X8.125) will still be immersive enough.
Well, that’s a tough question. It all depends on the experience you want. The larger the screen the more immersive it feels. Clarity depends on the screen ration (I shoot for 16:9) for full experience and resolution but also depends on the quality of the projector. Is the projector a short throw, is it 1080 or 4k, what’s the brightness level (brighter is better), what’s the response time meaning is the projector designed for gaming. Also, the screen material quality matters. Cheaper screens may show more distortion where a premium screen may show more clarity and have better impact resistance. You can choose a screen in a 4:3 ration but sometimes your projector loses resolution in this format. At the end of the day, if possible and space allows, get the largest screen you can fit without it looking droopy and sloppy, but make sure it’s matched to your projector output.
What is the distance from where the bungie eyelet to the frame with it installed? Trying to see if I can squeeze an extra inch or so on the height of my screen
Great video! I had a few questions regarding the frame. 1) Did you have any issues accessing the bungie cord holes on the side you mounted to your wall? 2) Are the bungie cords needed at the bottom of the screen? 3) Did you end up adding any padding/foam under the flaps of your impact screen to protect your frame? I was looking to install something similar without the bottom bracket of the strut frame since I'm on carpet. Not sure if that would create an issue with screen tension. I also want to fill my entire wall with the screen so struts will be mounted to the side walls and top but I wanted to make sure the bungies could be access when mounted directly to something. Although, now that I think about it I could put the bungie cords in place prior to mounting to the wall.
The bungees wrap through the strut openings and through the screen and hook over the ball. I did not add foam padding at top/bottom yet but do plan to asap. I put bungees at every eyelet on the screen and my screen was too tight so I removed a few from the sides and bottom. This gave me more flexibility without sacrificing screen quality for movies. I’ll be honest, if you don’t use the strut at the bottom, that’s ok, just maybe weigh it down a little or make sure the bungees at the side hole it taught in place. Just make sure you confirm the screen size ratio. Most screens are sold at outside perimeter but you have to subtract the outside flap so an 8’ tall screen has a slight smaller screen (white screen part). Also, make sure the ratio screen is matched to your projector. Hope this helps…
@@DieselLegiance Thanks for the response! I plan to have a slot/sleeve at the bottom of the screen so something weighted can be added. I might opt for a 3-sided strut build since my border will be flush with the walls in my room. That would give me plenty of access points for the bungees to connect, plus I can add additional items like an archery net or memory foam topper behind the screen.
Yes, but I’m also taller at 6’3” with longer arms so when I gave a full swing and proper follow through, sometimes I would hit the ceiling. But my basement is 9’ ceilings not 8’. I ended up moving my sim to my garage.
@@DieselLegiance Yeah I'm also gonna put the SIM in my garage as it has 10ft cielings. I don't think 8/9ft is sufficient. Glad the SIM is working out well though!
@skylerknecht6588 It’s not as nice of a setup in my garage as it was in the basement as I have to be able to use my garage but someday I’d like to build a large shed or metal garage building and move it there.
@@DieselLegiance I actually have a large shed. The probelm is installing insulation and running eletric/heat to it. Costs start to add up and having it in a garage/basement even if it is restricted doesn't seem too bad.
I can swing my driver but I have to be mindful of my follow-through because I am taller at 6‘3“. So as long as I adjust my follow-through swing I can still drive a golf ball.
It’s a work in progress lol. I had troubles getting the Skytrak to connect on a regular basis but after a couple calls to their support team it’s connected now. The screen is just a tad too tight as the ball bounces back but not enough to hurt anyone just enough to have to chase the ball down. Overall it’s going good.
Hi, Matt. Great video! I'm making a similar build in my house as well. What size screws/drill bit did you use to mount the top strut to the joist above? Thanks for sharing this!
@@DieselLegiance Yes. I saw you pull them through the side struts but if the strut is screwed directly to the joist, isn't hard to squeeze through the hole and back out if the backside of the strut is against the joist. Sorry for the questions but I didn't see that part on your video.
I’m going to give this a try and order a screen from Carls. Thanks for posting! How has the frame held up? Was it plenty strong for hitting balls not without any issues?
How in the world do you keep a basement so darn clutter free?? Lol thanks for the Video! I am doing my sim in a bedroom and just looking at how others have done it. Wish i had a space like yours. You might have the most perfect space for a golf sim. Which screen from carls did you get?
I do have a 9’ basement ceiling which helps but I am a little limited in my follow through swing but it allows me to practice a little when I can’t get to a course due to my work schedule. I went with a Carls Place Premium screen with flaps in a 8x14 size.
@@DieselLegiance So the frame is based on screen, not your ceiling height? My ceiling is like 9' 3" and my screen which was delivered today is 8.5' x 11.5'. Should I just do ceiling height for the upright section and allow bungees to do their thing?
You may need to experiment with the screen position as it may need adjusted based on your normal swing, the location of the projector, etc. I would say center the screen within the frame with the bungees and make adjustments from there. I found using all bungees at every hole on the screen made my screen too tight so I removed every other bungee and it’s much better now.
Screen is 8x14 so I made the frame about 4” larger on all four sides. You could go 2-3” larger, instead of 4”, it depends on the bungees you plan to use.
You should be fine. Worst case scenario, Fold over or double up your Bungees to make the screen more tight but don’t make the screen too tight or the ball will fly back at ya.
Yeah I was thinking that too. I’m most likely going to install a memory foam topper behind the screen also because I am fixing the screen to the wall with 12” of space behind.
