The Time The Cowboys DIDN'T Host Thanksgiving

  • In 1975 and 1977, the St. Louis Cardinals took over hosting duties for the Thanksgiving game over the Dallas Cowboys. This decision did not go so well. Here's the story behind how the Cardinals, for two years, got to play on Thanksgiving and kick the Cowboys off.
How Monday Night Football Almost Never Happened: • The Creation of Monday...
NOTE: One part had to be removed due to copyright (around the 1:20 mark). It talked about how nobody wanted to play on Thanksgiving outside of the Lions, and that Pete Rozelle was looking to push the envelope on television

an irony about the low attendance for the 1962 Thanksgiving Bronco game- that game had a 46-45 score, so the low attendance and those who did show up at least got a good show.

Very well done, nice to have an explanation here on youtube. One correction, Tex was the Cowboys team President, not the owner. Tex was a marketer, and saw value for the exposure of the Cowboys this day. A huge benefit, especially in late November is for the team to have 10 days off after playing on a Thursday ! I cannot imagine not having the Cowboys on Thanksgiving, as my family "adjusts" dinner time around the game time every year !! Faithful since 1974 !! Except of course 1975 and 1977 :(.

As a Dol-Fan that 1977 game with the Cardinals is a Thanksgiving treat as the Dolphins scored a record 55 points in one game which was surprise because after a slow start the Cardinals were rolling before the game and the Dolphins were rebuilding after several of their star players from the 1972 unbeaten season had left the team. Bob Griese who was wearing glasses throwing 6 TD's in a game which was almost surprising as Egypt President Anwar Sadat making a speech at the Knesset in Israel which was the biggest news item that week of the game.

Schramm was a "brand" genius before the term fell into favor. He had Cowboys wear white jerseys at home so that they would look the same when they came rolling into your town. Passing up a nationally televised game was not in his blood. These seeds he planted eventually sprouted the term "America's Team" because, unlike the Lions, he was committed to putting out a quality product. It's easier to garner fans across the country when you are consistently winning.

As a Cowboys fan back then, I remember how strange the Thanksgivings of 1975 and 1977 were with the Cowboys not playing. I do remember rooting for the Bills in 1975 and the Dolphins in 1977 because the Cardinals were in the same division as the Cowboys. Sandwiched in between those two Thanksgiving games in St. Louis was the 1976 game played at Texas Stadium in Irving. The Cowboys won 19-14 over ... wait for it ... the St. Louis Cardinals. I've wondered if that was also intentional, to have the Cardinals as the visiting team in 1976 so they would be playing the late game on Thanksgiving Day three years in a row. I would imagine that after going 0-3 in that stretch, getting below-average crowds at home, and terrible TV ratings at home, the Cardinals were ready to say "We tried but it didn't work out." The Cardinals in their insistence on getting a piece of the late afternoon pumpkin pie wound up giving the Cowboys a bargaining chip for Thanksgiving Day, to play at home in the late afternoon game ad infinitum.

There was also a time, when the NFL was installing the primetime Thanksgiving Day game, that the Chiefs almost got guaranteed a home Thanksgiving Day game every year. Lamar Hunt was really campaigning for that, and then sadly passed away around that time too. As a nod to this, the Chiefs hosted the first primetime Thanksgiving Day game.
I think, as a Chiefs fan, that now's the time to start that tradition. We have two of the biggest eaters in the league in Andy Reid and Patrick Mahomes, imagine all the barbecue turkey flying around in KC, and the other two hosts of that day's games are NFC. Plus, we're consistently doing really well in the standings, perfect for a prime time showing.

I would keep the primetime Thanksgiving Day game as it is. Perhaps you could add a game in primetime on Thanksgiving EVE hosted by the Chiefs that Wednesday night.
I'd also be looking to add a Wednesday after Thanksgiving game that would be tied to the tree lighting in Rockefeller Plaza that would become "The NFL Holiday Kickoff" on NBC that would always be at Met Life with the Giants and Jets alternating as the hosts (and occasionally it being a Giants-Jets game).

I think part of the problem with why no one wanted that game in 1966 other than the Cowboys was it would have been a 3:30 PM ET game (CBS between games in 1966 and '67 aired To Tell The Truth (The Thanksgiving 1967 show is on UA-cam) followed by five minutes of CBS News at 3:00 PM ET/Noon PT, the Lions' game then was Noon ET/9:00 AM PT). Back then, I suspect for example Wellington Mara, who owned the Giants would not have wanted a 3:30 PM game ending at 6:30 on Thanksgiving out of concern of crime, that by 1966 thanks to a rapidly exploding drug epidemic in New York was already becoming a big problem (I believe in fact with one exception for a CBS special Monday Night presentation in the late 1960's the Giants didn't play a home Monday night game until Week 2 of the 1982 season that coincidentially was the last game played before a strike wiped out seven weeks of that season). Also, the Catholic Church has a much greater say in how things were done at that time and I think some NFL owners feared blowback from local churches if they played a 3:30 game on Thanksgiving (the Colts would have been a logical candidate for that 3:30 game because it would have burned off a home game they didn't have to start at 2:00 PM on Sunday). Also, many high schools then and now have always played on Thanksgiving and even though those games are in the morning, there likely was concern about losing attendance to the 3:30 NFL game (not the factor then it is now) AND college football had games on Thanksgiving Day opposite the NFL for many years (including most famously on ABC, Oklahoma-Nebraska when THAT was the biggest rivalry in ALL of college football in 1971 when that was a #1 vs. #2 game).
All of the above to me played into why no owner wanted that second Thanksgiving game when the Cowboys took it and used it to help eventually brand themselves as "America's Team."

The Cardinals forgot their place in the NFL's list of popular clubs and they weren't as good as the Cowboys were on the field during the '70s as a whole anyway. Also, the Cards had some nerve suddenly wanting to host the late Thanksgiving game after they turned it down and the Cowboys took a chance on it and were wildly successful. Furthermore, creating a conflict with that high school football rivalry wasn't cool.
