  • I made a whole bunch of mistakes in the building of this car. Let's see if I can help you avoid falling down the same holes.

Hey Paul, don’t give yourself such a hard time! Mistakes are inevitable, and ultimately that’s how we learn.. as for the cost, you can’t really put a price on how proud you’ll feel when you’re racing a car that YOU built. Keep doing what you’re doing, it’s inspiring for many and saves us from making similar mistakes 👍

Cheers. I am proud of the build. I ran the car at Brands Hatch yesterday and it goes really well.

Isn't your roll cage bolt in? You could simply remove it and paint it or get it powder coated. Now when it has all mounting points done and being fitted for some time shouldn't be a problem.

Hi Rafal, Yep, that's quite true but I have to dismantle a lot of the dash and remove the seat, centre console, etc. I probably will take the cage out to get it coated at some time but it's just something I could have avoided.

Excluding the price of the car is there a list of how much it’d cost at a bare minimum? The 750mc site says it can be done for under £3k with “mandatory” parts?
Why a fresh MOT first as well, if it’s off the road in pieces isn’t that pointless anyway?
Nothing wrong with wanting to build it yourself either 👌🏻👌🏻

Interesting points Keiran. I needed to drive the car about 90 miles to get the roll cage fitted and suspension set up - hence the need for an MOT. I think a lot of 116 Trophy cars are Street legal coz it's useful for shakedown runs. I don't think you build one for under £10k including the car. That would probably mean foregoing poly bushes and banking on no unforeseen issues. I replaced some suspension parts whereas maybe I could have gotten away with the old ones. I also replaced the big end shells and I could have taken a chance on the old ones.

@@PaulOffordRacing completely makes sense to be able to shake it down on the road. I’d be intrigued to see if you just ran eBays finest cheapest 116 with just the bits needed to race how much that would cost before needing to make changes.
I’ve been doing a mild rebuild of my e46 330ci on the drive and can’t wait to soon have a garage to do a project in so was thinking of one of these for the 750 series. I expected the safety bits to cost more and like you’ve said tools you’ve not expected to have to pay for to cost more but £10k still sounds more than their site suggests and makes more sense that cars that people are selling done costing that much with people wanting to at least get their money back.
I think sometimes taking parts to a garage instead of buying tools can save some money as well. I had the same issue getting bushes out the e46 and the amount of tool I bought and time wasted it would have been cheaper and saved loads of time from the start to drop off at the garage. All part of the process and “fun” though 😁

I'm building one, prices have risen since I've started, but £8k without labour costs, would see you about right (plus inflation).

I did have an additional thought here. I am running the car as a privateer with no sponsors. So I am not VAT registered and I can't offset the cost against other profits. If I was I could reclaim the VAT and put the costs through my company as marketing. So that would save me 20% and then a further 19% on the residual. That would get my build down to just over £10k net.

      That's impressive Jim.
