Hand Plane and Hand Saw Till. Hand Tools Cabinet Build Part 2.
Вставка
- Опубліковано 5 жов 2024
- What's Happening Everyone! In this video I continue the hand tool cabinet build by adding a hand plane and hand saw till, the unit can be made independently of the main cabinet, so it can be a stand alone unit.

Simple, modular design, great work. Well done sir. I love it.
Just found you love the tool cabinets and your very comfortable in front of the camera
Welcome along!
Great Ideas and Nice work. I am in the process of building a wall mounted hand tool cabinet. I like the saw till.
Thank you!
Glad it was helpful!
Great craftsmanship, sir. Unfortunately for me, I just found you UA-cam channel today. But thankful, I have subscribed and shouldn’t miss any more of your content. So if you see me liking your older post, that’s why but I love you attention to detail and showing your mistakes because it shows we all make mistakes including you guys that are professionals at woodworking. Thanks again for the content
Thanks Brian and welcome along
Good job for a Sparky 😁
I would nearly get away with it lol.
Great job so far John and also THE MAN THAT NEVER MADE A MISTAKE HAS NOT BEEN BORN YET
Looks great, and love the idea of making the plane and saw rack independent of the cabinet!
Glad you liked it Gary
Done a very nice job of that sir.
Nice build.
Looks great John some flexi ply with some sand paper works great for shaping curves
Thanks for the tip
@@JohnMcGrathManInShed also when you routing off shapes I use some double sided tape to hold it. Down or I put tape on both sides and yours some miter bond as-well just an observation but great video
Really nice work boss
Cheers Kevin
Looking good
Thanks 👍
Really appreciate the inclusion of the dovetail mistake. Nobody is perfect and I liked how you showed fixing it. Awesome build and video as usual. Keep it up John !
Cheers Chris
@@JohnMcGrathManInShed I'm interested in getting into hand plane work but am kind of overwhelmed with everything from buying old and refurbing(don't know if I have the time and knoweledge)/buying new/if buying new, what brand and kind of plane for a beginner? Tons of questions, any advice?
Yay part 2.
Didn't want to keep you waiting to long Gary
@@JohnMcGrathManInShed great video John. I want to make one. I don't have a single plane and only 1 saw. Still want to make it.
Frank Klausz, what a gentlemen woodworker! I believe he retired in New Jersey the next state over from me, I’d love to shake his hand and thank him for sharing his knowledge and more importantly his attitude, love and passion for the craft. A true craftsman!
Excellent series. Preparing for retirement and hopefully make woodworking a hobby, so your presentation is at the perfect speed. It's especially useful to see how to rectify errors! Thank you... I'll be watching a lot more. Dave.
Glad you liked it David
Nice job John. We all make mistakes, thank you for showing it. Didn’t even know that rasp existed. Need one!
It is one of my favourite tools
Great job I like the design with the removable center section.
Enjoyed watching this build. Plan to incorporate some of these ideas. Particularly the plane till as a stand alone on my wall. I appreciate the hand tool comment...there is definitely something therapeutic in shaping wood by hand...quiet too!
Thanks for the inspiration.
Glad you found it useful Andrea
Absolutely fantastic
Hi john,
If you cut a vertical slot, in the left hand side of your unit, you can slide your glass lapping plate in behind your planes to keep it safe,
Great job John, good use of space and room for more hand tools...
Thanks 👍
nice design and well put together, as you say ;- machines are accurate and arguably do a better job . but touches of fine joinery using hand tools elevate the finished piece to more than just a box with doors on.
'' An idea but not quite a plan'' sounds alot like the '' ZEN DOG' ( with irish lilt ) ' :- , He knows not where he's going for the ocean will decide, it's not the destination -but the thrill of the ride!!! :-}
I like it!
Very nice like the fact you are sharing errors its encouraging to see everyone faces issues while building👍🏻
Well done John!! You’ve helped solve my dilemma for displaying my planes and saws. I don’t why I didn’t see the solution before but watching this clarified what I need to do. Thanks
It is coming on very well keep up the good work
Love the design!!!! Great job and enjoy watching you!!!
Thank you
They look great John!!!
Looks great John iam in the middle of doing mine for my collection of old woodworking tools I've restore. Looking forward to the next part keep safe
I’m rewatching a fair bit of your videos, love the content. I’m sure by now you’ve got Spokeshaves galore, but I’m surprised you’re not using a card scraper to smooth off that edge on the sapele. The Shinto is terrific tool, but when I use it I get a relatively rough surface, even with the fine teeth. The card scraper takes a bit to get accustomed to but leaves a beautiful surface behind. Wonderful work, John. Cheers
Nice job 👍 Its looking good and awesome collection of planes
WOW it is start looking awesome . I really like how the dark wood looks on a light plywood. Very nice job.
Nice video and really nice cabinet. Great job
Excellent job, love it!
Glad you like it!
Fast becoming one of my favourite woodworking channels!
Awesome work mate - keep it up!
Great to hear David thanks!
Looks great! Like the different contrasting woods.
Great work as always. Thanks John !
Nice project, John.
Looks Great John! Thank you for doing this. I really like your idea for the hands saws. Very nice work!
You are very welcome
Looking great. Excited to see it completed.
Very tidy and organised. Great job!
Great job. Fantastic design. I may use some or most of your designs for my shop, as I get it together. Thanks for all the videos, and keep up the great work.
Please do!
This is a great project! Can’t wait for part 3! Beautiful work
Nice job !
Sounds pretty good so far John. Like the idea of it, might be quite quirky to display old vintage check planes like I’ve got on it
Looks great John. The cabinet is a model for some discrete led accent lighting. Would look great in the backround of the whiskey channel. 😀😀😀
Super job as normal John.... great detail and explained so well as you went through the different stages, not all channels give you the detail and sort of expect you know everything 😉 looking forward to next stage 👍
Nice job and it looks great. Love the detail that you put into a shop cabinet. Hopefully I will be buying a home in the country where i'll build a proper shop and just concentrate on good looking cabinets like yours .
love the way this is turning out john!
Cheer Dwight
Fantastic work, John! 😃
I just watched both videos in a roll! I was absolutely without time the last few days, sorry. 😬
Anyway, stay safe there with your family! 🖖😊
Great vid John keep it up
Thanks, will do!
Looking great John 😁. Enjoying this series.i think if I was 8 hours straight without at least three cups of tea I would have built the bloody thing upside down 😂🤣. Stay safe and thanks for the video 😁👍
I need to build a tea and coffee station next lol
@@JohnMcGrathManInShed 😁👍☕
I will be modeling mine after yours Thanks so much!! What is the buffer polisher with the wire brush on your bench? I need one like that.
Great job Bro
Cheers Sis
My workshop is a mess!! can't stand things not being organized!
The only time my shop is organized is right after I've finished organizing it.
Great work thanks for sharing. One thing I notice is you putting your plane on the bench on its face and cutting edge in school I was taught to place it on its side or I got the slipper.
This seems to be another controversial topic in woodworking. Does leaving the plane on it's soul dull the blade or does leaving it on it's side potentially kock the blade of square. 🤔
@@JohnMcGrathManInShed never thought of that, I will ponder it over a beer. Keep up the good work
hello!
Would you mind sharing a link for the track and guide system you used with the triton router? Looked to me to be a different brand from triton?
Great work John, very organised!

@@JohnMcGrathManInShed thank you John, much appreciated!
Very nice!! Lie-Nielsen hand planes?
I have one Lie Neilson it's the low angled jack
👍Subscribed.✅
This might be a bit daft but, when you're using Danish oil do you sand between coats? If so, what grit are we talking?
The cabinet is coming along nicely btw 👍🏻
Not usually, I apply a coat leave it a while then wipe of the excess and keep building coats that way. If I feel it needs it sometimes I will hit it with some 600 grit before the final coat.
@@JohnMcGrathManInShed happy days, I've never sanded between either, but then again, I havent got a clue what I'm doing 😂
Love it John, is the kerf on your general purpose saw slightly wider than your dovetail and tenon saws? If so if you run one pass through where your saws are sitting it will make it easier to get your saws in and out. Sorry it's a bit long winded. Regards Jim
John! Another great vid! Have you done a tutorial on each kind of plane a new woodworker must have on his wall? I want to know more about best types, why size matters, usage and your favorite brands. Also, I have a partial hand plane that needs parts. Do you know a good resource for plane parts in regard to quality and value?
Well lad! :) Im enjoying this series man, and its great to see ya crackin out the hand tools. Do feel like youre after readin my mind somehow tho.......some of the inside parts of your cabinet are very close to what ive been drawing/planning out for the last couple months haha :P Sapele is a lovely wood, good and strong, looks great and smells good when youre workin it too :) I used to get most of my hardwoods, and all of my exotics from England, that might prove difficult/expensive now with the recent changes.....where did you get your hardwood for this lad, Strahan?? I needs to find a new source of lumber, and veneers..... the veneers might be hard to find in little ol Ireland :P
Id suggest some Veritas wonder dogs for your MFT, ya could use them to pinch the wood from the sides leaving the top face unobstructed for workin on. The face of the wonder dogs are about 15mm high, so take that into account if ya often work with thinner materials :)
Cracker of a video lad, keep em comin boss :)
I get my wood from McMahons
Hi John, I thought you were going to have a piece of walnut running along the bottom of the saw till to capture the ends of the Chinese pull saws.
He's gone for a drink, the poor lads knackered.
I'll add something later, didn't have time in this video
We’re did you get your saw rasp from? 👍🏼
Liking the channel! Where are u buying your timber from?
looks great! did you decide against the base under the saws?
Just didn't have time, I'll add something in the next part.
@@JohnMcGrathManInShed gotcha, can't wait to see the next part!
Do you have flea markets in your area? Maybe you could find a spokeshave there. Or maybe eBay.
Why didn't you just tape both pieces together and work them to final shape at one time, together?
Hows she cutting John? I am a fellow Waterfordian. what do you think of the track adapter for the Bosch router? It's a bit late asking you now because I have already ordered one, but I am anxious to know whether I have made a good or crappy decision. Anyway, look after yourself and keep up the good content.
I am going to try McMahon's for timber too. I have been getting hardwood from Strahon Timber. Sound out for that advice.
It works great, it's a bit plastic tastic but no real complaints so far.
Sound out John. Are you having difficulty getting stuff from Axminster? I am looking to order stuff from them shortly.
Hello John, where did you get your Japanese rasp from. What is the model number? Thank you in advance. Peter
I have most of my tools here amazon.co.uk/shop/johnmcgrath you will find it in the woodworking section.
