I love the direct utilitarian design, no bling, it is just straight up in your face and purpose driven function. This cabinet means business. Thank you for documenting and sharing this project.

Fantastic cabinet design, been following the videos keenly. I'll make a similar design with lots of internal shelves in both cabinet and doors, to store all my craft supplies and small tools. Love the fact that you've used French Cleats, as they are not often given the credit they deserve. I only discovered them from a Paul Sellers video, never heard of them before! Thanks for taking the time to film this build, it's been really informative.

I’m really enjoying this build. Beautiful and practical (and not over-the-top showy). I’d like to build something like this in a couple years when I retire and relocate.

I was thinking of the dead space behind your plane shelf. If you made a slide out shelf on the left of the cabinet, you could use the space behind the plain's.

Hi John, you’ve made a fine job of the cabinet and I like the video series. The plane and saw till looks great - functional and elegant.
I’ve been thinking about your design and how I might implement it in my workshop.
I can’t help noticing the two big empty spaces on the workshop wall either side of the cabinet. With your design it looks like you have to keep these clear to allow for the doors to swing open, perhaps there’s room for something thin that lies flat to the wall..?
    Anyway... I was thinking...
    1. Full depth base cabinet for planes and saws etc. - just as you have done.
    2. A little less than half-depth doors with storage only on the inside with faux shaker style outer faces.
    3. Half depth cabinets mounted on the wall either side of the main cabinet.
The advantages are that more of the wall space would get used, the main cabinet wouldn’t hang out too far out from the wall over the worktop and the doors would be lighter - perhaps allowing piano hinges to be used. When you open the main cabinet doors they’d simply fold back on top of the half-depth cabinets either side... I’d be interested to know what you think..? By the way I only came up with this alternative this after watching your video - so thanks for helping me visualise the problem - all the best...

😁 that is going to look so good as your new backdrop 😁. Enjoying the build.... I want one. I'm just a bit short on wall space 😁. Just an idea (too late now) but it would have been a nice touch (I'll try and describe...) instead of the hooks to hold the doors open, could you have used a second main bolt... separated so you have the bolt on one side and the catch on the other.. so when the doors are open you use the bolt again to hold it open (my god that was a s#!t description... but you get the idea). Looking forward to the next one John. Stay safe 😁👍

Great vid John! That tool cabinet is amazing fit for purpose very utilitarian ! Nearly finished my workshop just one more osb board to go, then the fun begins, making cabinets and putting all my tools which I have been accumulating over the past 40 years for my retirement! Can't wait to start making things. I've got a load of vintage reclaimed teak which I am dying to use!

Hey John this is my second time watching this series through and I had a thought….. if you’re using the hinges on the outside, wouldn’t that defeat the purpose of putting a lock on it? If someone could just grab a screw driver and take the doors off? Just a thought, hopefully it’ll never come to that but I was wondering if there was any way around that?

  • @cathalwhelehan

this is looking great - look forward to seeing it getting finished. Now that you have a few tools in it, it's getting easier to imagine just how many tools you'll be able to store (but still easily get at) in such a small space. Pretty amazing really. I may do something similar on a small scale (I don't have anything like that many planes) just to get all my smaller tools like chisels, rasps, saws, screwdrivers and all that - even all the rulers, straight edges, combi-squares etc. etc. etc. out of drawers and organised where I can see them, even if it's just to save them from getting damaged whenever I'm rooting around in them for the one I want. I assume you'll be putting that dehumidifier up out of the road nearer the top of the cabinet as you go on?

Just a quick question if you can remember back. The OSB plywood sheets you put up were they 18mm thick?

Hi John, I've used single french cleats before, but never two on the same box. I'd be afraid only one would have any weight on it. How exactly does the vertical spacing need to match between the box and wall cleats?

Would there be any merit to putting a third hinge mounted with the long side mounted to the carcass so the weight is getting distributed more evenly?

Nice Job, the workshop walls are class. I have a similar workshop (steeltech). I got kingspan on mine from the factory, walls and ceiling but I still find the noise coming from it is a bit of a nuisance to the neighbours so I'm studding it out and started sheeting the ceiling with osb. Have You neighbor's close by and if so have You had any complaints? Not a usual question I know but curious?

I wish I had got the Kingspan! I have neighbours both sides of me but they can't really hear me. I try not to make noise late at night or early on the weekends. They probably think I mad talking to myself in the workshop anyway 😂
