For those who are wondering those are natural gas flares. Natural gas is a byproduct of oil exploitation, but due to the heavy regulations and lack of building permits for pipelines, it’s too expensive for the oil producers to take that gas and store and transport it, so they just burn it. Imagine the waste… all that could be used for heating, and could reduce our energy bills, but government doesn’t like that.
Nowadays we just used flare pens or flare guns lol, especially in a place like this where there isn't pine trees surrounding the stack. It's amazing well testers don't cause forest fires almost ever, cuz we certainly do try lol

Chemical engineer here, this is called a cold vent situation at an oil field. Not preferred at all, newer field have flare stacks that burn of the excess high pressure fluids. Looking at the clip, it seems they were unprepared and caught off guard i.e the improvisation. PS: From how it sounds, this vent is supersonic!

I mean, technically he's reducing his carbon footprint. Natural Gas, Methane, is roughly thirty times as strong a greenhouse gas as CO2 is. So by lighting it on fire, it greatly reduces the impact. Of course it would probably serve his carbon credit better to just leave the stuff in the ground altogether, but oh well
For anyone wondering, those stacks are a safety device. During drilling and fracking, large amounts of high pressure gas can be released that would make the well blowout. To prevent that, the gas is sent to those flare stacks to burn off. I know this because I built and installed flare stacks like these. Where I live, they are equipped with a pilot that automatically lights it on fire to prevent release of H2S gas to the atmosphere. Burning it changes it to SO2 which is less harmful, but does cause acid rain.

For anyone wondering, those stacks are a safety device. During drilling and fracking, large amounts of high pressure gas can be released that would make the well blowout. To prevent that, the gas is sent to those flare stacks to burn off. I know this because I built and installed flare stacks like these. Where I live, they are equipped with a pilot that automatically lights it on fire to prevent release of H2S gas to the atmosphere. Burning it changes it to SO2 which is less harmful, but does cause acid rain.
