Just spiraled down the Nigerian scammer rabbit hole, and haven't found any "ah ha!" answers to why many scammers are from Nigeria, outside of the obvious: extreme poverty, lack of economic opportunity, etc. Some kind of unique reasons seem to be 1. As a former British colony, English is ubiquitous and spoken well by many, 2. It's a really big country, so it has an advantage based on sheer volume, 3. Relatively good internet connectivity, 4. There seems to be little social backlash for making money this way, so there are fewer ethical barriers. The more you know! 🌈
These points are interesting and make a lot of sense. Here in france the stereotype is that scammers come from the ivory coast, a west african country that has french as a main language, has a lot of poverty but enough infrastructures that people can access the internet easily and while it isn't the largest african country by far, it's one of the biggest amongst those who fullfill the previously mentioned requirements. Seems like both countries share these characteristics.
These scams have existed in Nigeria for many years too. It's slightly more advanced but the way they work reminds a lot of the Nigerian prince scams, it's just romance here but pretty much the same script. So they have an industry built around these scams. I think many have little empathy for specially rich American's too became of the colonization and slavery, many probably think American's are rich anyway and deserve getting scammed.
If you watch Catfished, especially the earlier videos, they confirm what has been stated here. I liken it to how normalized MLM and pyramid scheme scams are in capitalist societies. In other countries, MLM doesn't work because the social stigmas don't allow for people to take advantage in such a way. ❤
From what I've seen online, there's actually a 'coolness' factor to scamming in modern Nigerian culture. They call themselves 'Yahoo boys' and it's a whole roughian, gangster type of lifestyle. I think the glorification of it makes it much easier to justify, plus they have detailed scripts to run a specific scam that get passed around btwn friends and family.

It's not just Nigeria, but there are a few reasons why a lot of internet scammers tend to come from specific countries. There are many people who are in poverty yet but at the same time have relatively high English proficiency and good access to the internet. Because of this, people can make a lot of easy money scamming people from wealthier English speaking countries.

The only thing I found to work was to offer to install actual security products for them and have it set to auto-run every so often with a pop-up when it completed or whatever (so it looked like something was happening).
Yeah, my friend's mum just got tech support (PayPal) scammed. She had just lost her husband and thought the email was from PayPal and that her husband must have had an old account. It's so sad.

"...he knows about Ohio..." Narrator: he, did NOT, in fact, know about Ohio. It is entertaining how when the bait is Random Instagram Baddie that they're able to bring them on so they can be like "no, stupid". Not so much with Jennifer Aniston.
Remember Christina Grimmie who was killed by a fan who was convinced he was dating her and that she was his girlfriend when in reality he was delusional.

I HIGHLY doubt he’s a PT, I would know, all that I know make very good money, not enough to be crazy rich, but certainly enough to pay for our airfare to visit fake celebs, nothing he showed is remotely what PT’s do, we don’t do adjustments, I’m guessing he has some sort of adjacent business where he does chiropractic work, also, he would easily be found, as in the U.S you must be licensed to treat patients (legally) he’s clearly the type that lies as easily as he breathes…. Well, his breathing may be more difficult, for whatever reason, he may need to lay off of the nose candy with that terrible congestion…
Jennifer Aniston is NOT an ‘easy to befriend’ kind of person. She is notorious for even being standoffish with her own colleagues and just wouldn’t be dating a person of this type. Realistically she is someone who can demand dates with other A-listers and probably does so. When Jennifer shows up at events and galas, she wants to be on the arms of someone wealthy, handsome and even well known. This is SO sad when people think they are dating famous people. In fact, there are others claiming the same. Delusional and potentially dangerous.

And even though she's rich she still likes to be treated like a woman with gifts etc, but when we get married we'll share funds.
You guys are the dumb ones. Jennifer only talks to people on telegram. Ask me how I know, incels.
Guys, this is Jen. Don’t fight - I love you both. Now will one of you please send me that loan money I asked for?
@@Brooklyntrash
Everyone, do not give money to this person! They're trying to scam you! How do I know this? I know this because I'm the real Jennifer Aniston!
He was wrong about the capital of Ohio. Lol
😂😂
The fact that he said Cincinnati, and “Jennifer” responded with “You are so smart!” sums up this whole sorry farce in so many ways.😂
I hope Steve B's girlfriend broke up with him because WTF is this? 💀
I wanted to puke when he said he was already seeing someone WHILE GOING AFTER A FAKE CELEB… 🤦♀️ what’s going on with boomers!?
10:13
My question is wtf is THIS????
There is another guy on scamfish who has fallen for Jennifer Aniston. 😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂
He's totally ridiculous too, I was laughing so much, though that guy was more likeable than this guy, gave me the creep warning.
What's scamfish?
@@iaincowell9747They’re revering to the UA-cam channel where this video originally came from. It’s called “Social Catfish”. It’s from a company that helps people find out if and by who they’re being scammed.
Not everybody knows Johnny Depp? Are you kidding me?
Johnny who?
Facts. Man has been famous for 40 years lmao
Yeah, I'd recognize Johnny Depp in public. I can't say the same about Jennifer Aniston
@@Lizzypoohxo I just saw JA on an Actors roundtable on The Hollywood Reporter chsnnel. She looks great. I'd recognize her in a second.
I met her when she just started on Friends. She was staying in hotel I worked for. She was super sweet. Kind as can be.
Ikr. He has had so many cult classic movies.
I’d argue that minus Friends JA movies are a lot less memorable. She’s a huge celebrity too but JD is definitely more famous in my opinion.
Often they have a big Muslim population there too...
Every time "Steve B!tch" gets mentioned, I lose it.
20:26 LMAO. Right as soon as I thought "Why does he always sound like his nose is stuffed up?" you commented on it.
ahahahahhahahaaha married to brad pit, but wants steve BIYAAAATCH :D
He sounds like Chuckie from Rugrats!
Too much nose candy, that would explain why he’s so broke when he claims to be in a profession I know well, and where with 10 years experience you can easily make close to 100k….
Unless he lied about that too…
This “Steve the beech” is as trustworthy as a 4 dollar bill…
Ps: hope he’s watching and reading the comments, BECAUSE…
The capital is COLUMBUS!
Perhaps Steve’s daughter needs to get him checked out, he’s got some serious and questionable behaviors going on…
And with the “sure hope my gf of THREE YEARS DOESNT FIND OUT” F HIM, let’s make sure she does!
What a deadbeat douchebag.
Steve, NOBODY wants ya, stop “playing the lottery” and get a geography tutor!
I'm surprised they kept this jabronie on the hook after he said $800 + half a domestic airline ticket was too steep for him.
Especially since they got the last guy with over a milli
True but every little bit counts
“Generated Aniston”
“Jennifer Maniston”
Comedy gold. Im dead 😅 💀
Jen Scamiston.
As someone with a relative that has been scammed multiple times (not catfished thank god), but after he lost his wife, he got ransomwared a couple of times. Tbh, you have to control things as they rarely listen (and watch their finances and/or take control of it). It's a really hard thing, but these dudes like this guy, very little sympathy. Sit down with your older relatives about this stuff, it's prolific.
I feel you, my Gma got scammed by the stereotypical "Nigerian Prince" when that was still at it's peak. She was super wealthy and after retiring had no more money for herself let alone her 3 daughters' inheritance.
@@Jenn_Lucky Yeah luckily I talk to him pretty much everyday on the phone, and my sister works in cybersecurity or else that would have happened to him. I realized they were scams immediately, called sister, and she worked fast (MVP). We monitor things closely now, which he isn't happy about, but it's basically part of caretaking at this point...
I have a couple older relatives who have been tech-support scammed (not catfished, so at least there wasn't an emotional connection to have to deconstruct).
Great that you are looking after your relatives, sureit doesn't always help but it's important that we look after our elderly, many are lonely and get easily taken advantage of.
I love how he was like “Date idea: we drink and drive”
"...he knows about Ohio..."
Narrator:
he, did NOT, in fact, know about Ohio.
Steve's narcissism is chokingly TANGIBLE!
Imagine your husband divorces you and then you see him on this show thinking Jennifer Anniston is dating him 😂😂
I went to volunteer at a senior home, and a lady asked me "who sent you?" and I said I saw the need on Facebook and she asked me "what's Facebook? " how do I explain the internet
Hey it's probably good she doesn't know what Facebook is, otherwise she'd be sending her old age pension to "Johnny Depp" or a random oil rig worker😂
Tell her it's basically tv, but people can send in their own tapes 😌
I’m so uncomfortable by the fact that the chair headrest pillow is upside down😭
Same!!! It's bothering me so much 😂 thanks for saying that, I thought it's just me lol
Ditto, wonder if he liked it that way or just doesn't realize its upside down? Maybe he's catfishing for a good woman to fix it for him?? Bahaaa too funny!!
When you’re up eating dry cereal , staring at the wall and Sixteenleo posts🎉
Scammer- “It’s like shootin fish in a barrel.”
My psychotic fantasy is that Friends never even existed
Same lol
Would've spared us from another cringe millennial fandom
All it is, is Living Single with the flavor removed. 😅
Yeah, never liked the show and couldn't get into it.
Could never figure out why it was so popular.
Generated Aniston 😂😂😂
Nice 😂
That would be funny if the scammer accidentally sent a Jonny Depp pic
6:52 "I aspire to greatness and push myself to maximum limits" my brother in christ you're a chiropractor
I feel like that sentence is something he quote from a Facebook post. 😭
He said physical therapy. PT is not the same as chiropractic practice.
also, chiropractors are good too
@@WafflePancakes1314 I know Leo said PT but the guy was shown doing an "adjustment" in one of the clips
I thought Jenifer Aniston was scamming me but it was really Halle Berry
I mean I am in love with Scully, but in a healthy, I would know fake Gillian Anderson doesn't need my last $40, kind of way 😊😂
The X-Files was a long time ago she hit me up and I had to send it
Well it’s impossible since Jennifer Aniston is my wife and is very loyal in our dms.
Dude shes dating me in messaging 😂
You're both lying, she told me I'm her favorite
I'm dating her evil twin. She's got a goatee.
This guy is nuts to think hes dating Jennifer Aniston,She promised me she would never talk to other men!
I just have to say I’ve been struggling mentally a lot lately, but seeing you upload really boosts my mood for a bit. I appreciate you and your content so so much I hope you know just how much you’ve put a smile on my and others faces. You’re such a ray of sunshine and exactly what we need in this dark scary world. Don’t stop what you’re doing man, I just know you’re gonna be BIG one day. Thank you for being you ❤
Would you not look at yourself & Jennifer Anniston and think … mm maybe not?
Love that Leo has upgraded his hair from white fluff to extra floofy curly 😆💕
This reminds me of when I caught my mom talking to a fake Nathan Fillian account. She actually tried to tell me it was his private account 😂 it was a misspelled version of his name and a stock photo. I was like why would he talk to you!?
You mean Nathan Fillion?
@@Rodgerdodger66 yes.

Up late with insomnia and was trying to find something to watch - thank you Leo!
Yeah insomnia... Courage girl I am with you.
His idea for a first date is drinking and driving?? More like last date ever. I’m sure it would take her breath away tbh.💀💀 16:51

Eta: bonus points for suggesting they go for a drive _after_ having drinks 🤦🏼♀️
I’m 5’4” and 98-94 and I’m skinny but not worryingly so
@@Cassxowary I also imagine you aren’t 50+ years old? Because that makes a big difference. Either way, it’s clear from her very in shape build that she doesn’t weigh that little.
@@Cassxowary I'm pretty sure that's underweight
@@linger6666It definitely is. I'm 5'4 and a healthy, ideal weight for that height is in the 120 range.
If you google it, it actually says that’s her weight. 🤷🏻♀️ but her height is said to be 5’4 not 5’6. Says she weighed 117 pounds age 47.
This is so ironic. My mom thinks she's been talking to Keanu Reeves. Completely convinced. No matter how much me and my sister try to convince her otherwise, she just gets mad. She's got MS and has stopped taking all of her meds, and her mental state has been declining. She no longer wants to talk to me, or even have me in her house, as i live in a tent in her back yard because I'm homeless again. And the kicker is SHE'S BEEN BUYING "HIM" $500 GOOGLE PLAY OR APPLE CARDS EVERY SINGLE DAY! She got an inheritance when my grandparents passed and it's almost gone now, because of this scammer fuck. I don't know what to do. She won't even let me take a shower or fill up bottles of water for 2 seconds. It's kind the mom i knew is gone...
You need to get her professional help before all her money is gone and she's a heartbroken wreck 😢 talk to a doctor or an organisation that can help you out, that's pretty serious
Contact senior and disabled services if you can. She's being abused financially and if she isn't in the right state of mind, she needs someone as a conservator.
2 videos from Leo, in one week, pushes WAY harder than my antidepressants…too bad this euphoric feeling can’t be bottled, I’d gladly stay hooked for life!😂
Jennifer was already passed 50 when this supposed surprise birthday party took place that she told him about.

Dude, I’m 40, dumb as a box of rocks, I’m very depressed, mentally ill, have no life, et cetera, and I am super pumped that my fav UA-camr knows my first name when my screen name pops up commenting on his twitch stream, and I’m not delusional enough to think anything will ever happen there. 7:40 Apparently her real eye color is brown, but she uses blue contacts sometimes. According to google.
News flash: that “old” man is only 5 years older than Jennifer Aniston. She’s no longer the girl in her 20s from “Friends”. Just so you know

By "search specialist" she means "I spent 10 seconds unravelling this mystery and then grabbed an early lunch".
Yep. And did basic checks that any internet savvy 20 something could do with their eyes shut.

Nah, they’re on signal
I've never even HEARD of telegram, I think I just fell out of a coconut tree.
I’m Nigerian and honestly this sucks and I obviously don’t agree with this at all. I'm thinking that's the magic question that determines whether or not to proceed with the scam. If he isn't smart enough to either know OR Google it, then he'll def go for sending a super rich celebrity $ for lunch. & hotel room. & entrance to her party. & plane ticket...
When I did telemarketing in 2000, the call back ? was "is your household income either over or under 40,000.00/yr...

5:09 my SIL is in her mid-30s and uses Facebook like everyone used to 15 years ago, posting random stuff and being quirky but these days it just comes off as boomer
My clients (in their 70s) always ask me (late 30s) "did you see... on Facebook?" No, I didn't because I don't use Facebook. I have it because I use messenger to FaceTime my adult children and other family members out of state but I stay off of it because I'm so sick of seeing other people's crap lol.
@@Lizzypoohxo- Agree. Who wants to read post after post like “My hubbie and I just had the most delish pancakes at iHop!” Two minutes in and my eyes are crossing. I guess there are people who enjoy reading that tripe, but why?😂
True boomers use Facebook to have conversations with their partners that they ought to be having by text messages, like "looking forward to a lovely date night dinner out tonight, pookie, don't forget to pick up the dry cleaning on your way home! XOXO!" It's excruciating.
