we did this to our field this year works great. you still get a few sprigs of grass or weeds here and there but overall 95+% weed free. we used white clover since it doesn't get very tall, we also cut it with sand, like 50/50 so I don't waste seeds. you don't need a lot, there're pretty good at filling in. Better than the weed suppression though is the moisture retention. we don't have to water anymore because of it. on a 90 degree day you can put your hand under the clover and its still moist from the dew. at the end of the season we'll till it under for extra green compost

Have you tried using a lawn seeder, one that you can pull behind your 4 wheeler? I wasn't sure how that might work for you. We've sold many of them at our auctions, most of the time they don't go for much, but they sure are handy, even out in the field.
Also, do ya'll have much trouble with Musk Thistle in your area? We use to have a terrible time with it and choking out our field grass.

I have a smaller garden that I want to plant cover crops on to help control weeks and build up my soil. If I plant in now in October when will it bloom. I'd love to have it until the blooms start to fade then maybe plant corn afterwards? I live in VA in Zone 7. Thanks.

Crimson clover is amazing for pigs I know for sure...... it’s got 25% crude protein that is 85% digestible! ........ however I haven’t put calves or horses on it. I read online that it can cause bloat, so be careful.

I’ve still have our old seeder still works good only thing once I didn’t get all the seed out and mice chewed holes in it. So sowing the clover now should make a good food plot by the fall?
