  • Back to the cabin on my friend's property. I notch some logs, split the base logs and talk about my philosophy of living simply.
    Music:
Phoenix by Simon Alexander / @simonalexanders
VERSE you came in for more but it’s more than you can might and in that’s rotten you’re ready to ignite stuck in a wicked fever as you’re wating for a home and your cadance fails to bed a steady calm
    CHORUS
hold on to your fire you feel a need to burn for days bygone and I know that so would anyone so don’t let that fire go now VERSE listen to your reason which you seem to have ignored for you lack a way to trade your sore eyes for the blame but you won’t learn just to make it through the night so the bad, bad dreams they take you spiraling down through the dark so just... CHORUS hold on to your fire you feel a need to burn for days bygone but I know that so would anyone so don’t let that fire go now STICK at the most you strain it not to choke as the bitter pill is sold with hollow wine missing piece unfolding at the crease but don’t you dare to go and light the fuse if you burn it down there’s nothing left to loose so don’t you dare to let that fire go now

I hear you man!! I've been a Financial Advisor for 22 years. Between compliance, Government regulations that have gotten out-of-control, and the day-to-day stress of managing millions of dollars, I'm about ready to say piss on all of it!! Every time I go fishing or hunting, I feel alive!! Anyway, great advice!

It’s strange reading 2-3-4 year old comments about government regulations lol
      Today’s regulations are waaaay worse!
I hope you found some peace man.

Love your philosophy! Reminds me of a verse in a song by the Eagles. The song is about a different subject, but the verse can be applied to so many situations, and it says, "so often times it happens, that we live our lives in chains, and we never even know we have the key". So true for so many! Thanks for the inspiration 👍

I've watched your build videos casually over the years and I'm finally going back to watch them in chronological order. I appreciate when you stop to offer commentary it is always substantive and never vacuous. And yes, your videos have greatly inspired me. I leave behind my 9 to 5 in October. Not long after I plan to depart with my one-year-old golden retriever on the great adventure of acquiring undeveloped land somewhere to build a home and self-reliant lifestyle with my own hands. Thank you for being an inspiration to the rest of us.

I SO admire that you want to build these cabins by hand tools alone. I have watched many videos of people using power tools and complaining all the way. I watched a full series on Dick Proenekke (Alone in the Wilderness) who built his cabin in Alaska in the 1960's with hand tools. He even showed how to make a locking door latch out of wood. Maybe check him out if you need any inspiration. Keep up the great work!

I know little about log cabins, but from a common sense point of view. I have to say, going past the core of the log to make the notch seems like a bad idea, as it's removing the strongest part of the log. I would rather make close to but no more than a 1/2 notch on BOTH logs to make them sit close together with clay +moss in between for a seal.
There is also a technique where you remove the most rounded part on the TOP log (only an inch or two), bottom side and put the seal in with it, also allowing it to close up even more. I like the thought of that.
Either way, you have to remove material from both logs for the best fit and seal.
It's all about the wood wanting to twist around the core apparently.
I am wanting to build a structure like this for the longest time, just to learn about it.
Thx for sharing, looking forward to see the end result!

That's why we pulled up our stakes in Nova Scotia and moved to the NWT! I can't imagine ever going back. Now I just need to figure out a way to live how I want up here, and get out of the 9-5 trap. Lots of houseboaters living off-grid here. Can't do a cabin without a land lease, which is hard to get, or you could stake a prospecting claim or something. Working into it! Take care, hope you aren't working a fulltime job while doing all of this.

In this modern economy where debt is king and wage slavery for Mr and Mrs Average is a very real and growing thing, the ability to do what you've done is becoming limited, certainly here in the UK. That in no way excuses couch sitting, everyone has a little time to experience nature, even if it's only for a few hours on a Sunday.

I'm torn about whether to de-bark the logs. How important (or unimportant) is it? I'm also not sure about whether to let the logs dry for a year or two. I'm building a small cabin, for temporary use, mainly hemlock and pine and I'm leaning towards getting it up asap, which means no de-barking and very little drying (maybe a couple of months). What do you think?
