Both thermal and abrasion protection are offered by your diving hoods, gloves and boots. The thicker the warmer but you sacrifice dexterity or hearing for warmth so a compromise is best.
1.5mm is fine for the tropics, 3mm where you need a combination of movement and warmth, 5mm for warmth and 7mm for lots of thermal protection whilst diving.

Fun fact: diving gloves are illegal in Egypt, because people might be more easily inclined to touch the marine life when wearing them.

We have been diving in Hurghada in July. None of the dive masters warned me about that.. Some Swedish tourist brought topic up since he was taking OW in Egypt and his instructor forbid knives and gloves.. Our dive master was present and he didn't comment, like he did not care. Maybe it is unwritten rule since on other things Egyptians are very strict.

There is no squeeze using dry gloves is used properly; you need thin venting plastic pipe or just a piece of fabric like the thumb loop of undergarment going under writs seal and equalizing pressure with interior of the dry suit

Hey! I'm PADI OW certified. I dived in dutch springs PA for a 60' fun dive. I needed a 7mm wetsuit 5mm hood and 5mm glove. Jesus was I cold. My head was fine but my hands, Jesus Christ.

Im OWD cerified as well, but I have to use a 7mm full and 5mm short with a hood integrated. Also very goddamn thick gloves. And at 9m.
