I'm not sure why but the thought of a ship just drifting in open waters completely empty just creeps me out all by itself.

I remember this particular story from years ago, I have listened to many of these throughout the years but this one sticks out in my memory.
This is a perfect example I lwas laying in bed listening to this play story I dozed off and 3/4 of it went by,
So to the level how much I like this particular one I'll just send it all the way back to the beginning and listen to it all over again ...
And A sincere thank you for providing these great old stories but I actually remember when I was younger when they played on the radio live.
Well I clearly spoke enough in this comment and I'll be heading back to the beginning maybe in the near future you'll see me in another comment section
    And once again,,
    Thank you
    and,,,,,,. take care

Reminds me of the "Widows Walks" on the old homes, the women waiting for the men to return.

Love this episode. Fall asleep to it very often. Not perfect to be sure, but it has atmosphere, a little bit of mystery, and a few pretty decent efforts by the cast...especially George Mathews as Captain Adams; excellent stylings that mix authority with unravel and desperation. Only problem I had was with the actor that played both Mr. Peabody/Ames. Voices sounded pretty similar and at least to me got confusing as to who was speaking unless I concentrated.

25:18 Left port with 19, minus 1, then 2 more = 17? Must be common core got it's start on the high seas.

Davey Jones Locker as I understand it, is a name used by 18th and 19th century sailors for "The bottom of the Sea". If you or your ship went to ....Where this sea legend originated is up for debate. I have some small experience with the "Sea" and I can tell you right now that it is FULL of strange mysteries. I can only imagine what sailors of yesterday made of it, not even with what is known today. The ocean covers more than two thirds of the surface of our planet, and with hurricanes, rouge waves, Tsunamis, strange and alien creatures of the deep? Bizarre phenomena, must have wreaked havoc on the imaginations of ancient mariners. Davey Jones locker not being the least of which, was very terrifying indeed. The abyss...a black watery gave, haunted with all the superstitions of a sailors tainted heart...Davey Jones was personified and feared....But what a rush!!! to go to sea, face him, and live to drink about it!!!

The guy playing Mr. Rogers sounds like Andrew Robinson. His acting style as well.

The one good thing about a sailor going down to the bottom, is ....well...he will never want for a drink!!!

There is a bit if a flaw in the story. The log of the ship that found the dead ship says there was no one alive on board. It also says the table was set for 6, the meal was warm and everything was ship shape. It does not mention the bodies if the five poisoned men whom the captain could not have gotten rid of because he jumped over board just after the last man died. Sorry, but as a writer, that part bothered me.

I wasn't either, but it's easy enough to ask Wikipedia. It has a good, brief discussion. Still, the origin of the term seems to remain obscure...but it's at least centuries old.

About two-thirds in - I'd bet anything that his wife is dead, he's hauled her corpse onto the ship and the "conversations" between the captain and his wife are all in the captain's head.

Sounds more like the captain has syphilis, and they're not Indians unless you're in India. People in America are Natives!!! Humans can be so devious, heartless, and evil. It's sad that women in those days would have had to marry a person like the captain to survive.
