Celebrate New Mexico: The Oryx

- One thing New Mexicans know about living here is that when visitors move to New Mexico, they tend to stay.
From perfect climate, to goo people -- you name it.
And it turns out that rule is not just for humans, but for animals too.
Watch the video above as Todd Kurtz explains the story behind The Oryx.

These guys are dominating pretty much all the local preds except the cougars (who probably just go for easier prey)
A park ranger told me he once saw and oryx running around with a coyote impaled on its horns like a grotesque hat😲😨😲
They don’t dominate the local predators! 😂
@@_DB.COOPER yes they do. They even kill african lions on occasion
@@shafqatishan437 😝 😂 😆 yeah and they ride elephants to church on Sundays. I’ve taken over a dozen gemsbok oryx in my lifetime, I know a little bit about them. Their horns break, the horns are not strong enough to run around carrying a coyote or a mountain lion which I heard happened also.
@@_DB.COOPER yes I agree a coyote wouldn't be hanging from an oryx horn but oryx do dominate local southern predators. oryx are risky prey for many African species unless in a large pack/pride. Any mountain lion, coyote, or even a jaguar (which are found in Arizona, New Mexico, and Texas occasionally) wouldn't even consider an oryx as prey unless it's a calf/juvenile. Besides humans, there would be nothing to naturally keep their population down as they would immediately take over southern US and Mexico
@@_DB.COOPERAnd Adam Lanza took 20 elementary schoolers, doesn't mean he knew a thing about kids.
My brother has gotten 2 of them on hunts the meat is so lean and taste so good.....
I've heard people call oryx the meat of the Pharos. They're supposed to be great eating.
Can we get rhinos now? Please😎
why..? to hunt them?
@@kaeliemarvella?
@@billybob4159 ?
Rhinos are endangered you know that right

Ibex as well!
3 cheers for the oryx in new mexico hip hip heray hip hip heray hip hip heray
That’s kinda cool, they got Barbary sheep (from Africa) living in Texas and Nilgai (from Asia) living in Texas now gemsbok living in New Mexico!
At least we can now see foreign animals loving in our country 😁
Barbary sheep live in NM also.
Yeah, but now here in Mexico we have a problem with them.
Do they taste good?? 🤔
Yes, they make a nice stew.
👍
They’re so yummy!!
Best game meat I've ever had. I have a freezer full right now.
Good but not as good as American beef or elk.
สาบานได้ว่าจะไม่มีวันที่คนไทยจะเห็นคลิปนี้👍
It may seem cool to have them but it’s really not, will they keep hunters away from native elk and deer, yes, but the oryxes are grazing on the elk and deer’s land, they’re population will only get lower if oryx populations grow, I’ve been to Florida and hardly seen any native creatures besides the alligator and deer, mostly iguanas and other non native lizards
Cougars hunt the calves, and while the mexican wolf would help control oryx numbers, we made sure the wolves' population were to small to have any real impact on the oryx population.
We don’t need the wolf here.
Nah, wolves aren't antelope experts. Gemsbok are one of the riskiest prey even for lions.
Wolves kill cows and other domestic livestock. If there was a big oryx problem the NMDGF would increase the number of hunts yearly. Nothing controls animal population better than human hunters.
@@_DB.COOPER But wolves do it for free and much more consistently. And while livestock predation is a risk, more often then not, if there is abundant prey animals, predators (including wolves) usually ignore farm animals and animals associated with humans.
@@shafqatishan437 Yeah, and the much larger american bison is not a risky prey animal in the slightest.
Let's bring lions to control the population than lol
These guys can actually floor lions. Don’t believe me?
@@Orcaluv26 no they can’t! 😆 😂 😝
@DB COOPER yes they perfectly can
@@Orcaluv26 not always, lions succeed when they fully ambush it to secure the nose bite. But stand up, the gemsbok fights back.
Introducing lions would be a terrible idea. They'll not only takeover the whole ecosystem, but also threaten humans.
Release some cheetahs, it'll both help raise cheetah population and control the gemsbok population.
This is actually a very smart idea. The area is suitable for the cheetahs, they really won’t be hunted by bigger animals (maybe the mountain lion would pose a threat?!?) and they’ll be able to spread their population numbers in the wild all the while hunting and controlling the population of Oryx
@@Bigman-fh1fz This is a poor idea. It’s not usual for winter time temperatures to drop into the low twenties in southern New Mexico and cheetahs won’t do well.
@@nmelkhunter1 its a bad idea but not bc its too cold. cheetah grow dense coats of fur when they encounter colder temperatures. they can be outside year round if temperatures don't reach below 10-15 degrees
@@Bigman-fh1fz bad idea. Cheetah wouldn't even think about attacking an oryx. They are built to take down small antelope and calves of larger animals. Yes, cheetahs would eat oryx calves but that wouldn't control the population to the degree needed. plus they would starve if all they had were the babies of large animals to eat, which is still risky bc mothers will fiercely guard their calves.

We want to keep them at a certain size (domesticated) because if they cover the land the food monopoly which keeps a few rich while humanity in its totality must work to afford a peace of beef / I AM
I AM YOUR MASTER EVIL LEADERS
Men always want something to hunt especially in US so introducing them prevented them from hunting native animals, and having them in US will help if they become extinct in wild
The worst thing is the two-legged animals coming illegally across our border.
It's distressing to me.
Big game hunting is not right.
Stop it now !
problem is, there's literally nothing else in the state that can keep these guys' numbers in check. The cougars are the only local pred that stands a chance against oryx, and they probably just stick to easier prey. Bringing the oryx to the U.S purely for sport WAS morally wrong and just plain stupid, but now we're stuck with them.
Nah lol
I’ve taken over a dozen of them. Good eating and nice trophies.
@@Revan498 introduce cheetahs. Tho they weight less than cougars, cheetahs are antelope experts. They keep gemsbok population in check in Africa where lion is less in numbers. Cheetah females take a lot of calves, male cheetah coalition takedown adults as well. Cheetah population need saving, plus they're no threat to humans or local wildlife.
Nah it’s not at all
