My 4K player makes my “regular” blue ray movies look better. No way I replace all my blue rays with 4K !!!

I blind bought boutique blu rays all throughout the later half of the 2010’s. It was so fun & introduced me to so many awesome films. The problem now is that these 4k upgrades do so little to entice me to spend more money on the same niche horror film. How many times would one person want to spend 30 bucks on Kolobos ?

I think, we as collectors, are getting way too wrapped up in "upgrading". It is just way too expensive to double or triple dip when these prices are standard at $25 or even more for a deluxe edition or 4K. A blu-ray quality picture in most cases should be acceptable for any of us when viewing a film. Even DVD, in most cases should be acceptable. There are a few cases when an upgrade is warranted...."Funeral Home". I will buy a 4K, only if the price is right and I do not own the film in any other format. Otherwise, no. I am shooting for blu-ray quality across the board. Expense, expense, expense!!!! Too much. We must scale back and quit being tempted by shiny new packaging and artwork!

Upgrading physical media for me is simply a calculation of factors: What the movie is and how much I watch/enjoy it, the quality of the older release(s) I already own, the level of improvement in restoration or A/V quality, the inclusion or lack of new special features, packaging/presentation, and of course price point. I can't realistically upgrade everything so I strive be a discerning collector. I also strive to appreciate and enjoy what I have. I don't envision a new format replacing 4K UHD, atleast not for classic/catalog films, so I'm an advocate for collecting what you love.

For me, if the 4k is available and I don't own the film yet I get the 4k, but if I own the blu ray and the 4k comes out, I don't upgrade.

I still collect old physical media just for the packaging and nostalgia. I have movies that I'm fine with just on DVD. Other films I own several copies of on multiple formats. Being a nostalgic buyer makes the bank account unhappy. The big factors for me on upgrading are packaging and mileage. Great pair of videos today, sir.

DVD 📀 has been around for over 20 years now and still outsells Bluray and 4K. I think there will be a huge percentage of collectors who never collect bluray or 4K and stick with DVD.

To ignore the trouble of upgrading, I only purchase 4k now. For about the last year. Even with titles that I absolutely want to own, like Nightmare On Elm Street, I could just purchase the Blu-Rays. I know eventually it will have to go to 4k, so I am waiting and avoiding that 7 disc Blu-Ray set. I’m not dipping twice and wasting 15-25 dollars for a Blu-Ray as well, when the important television in my room and the living room are equipped with the best 4k.

  • @donjaun540

The big issue is the hardware. 4K TVs vary extensively in picture quality as do the 4K players. Even if a player/TV combo will do HDR10, HDR10+, Dolby Vision and HLG - that screen may not be able to produce the intended color depth and black levels needed to see the difference. Most people think you buy a 4K tv/player and boom your done - not even close.
As someone who's upgraded from most formats, vhs / laserdisc / dvd / 4k - with both tvs and projectors - 4K picture quality is the most complicated to dial in. ... But when you do - it's exquisite and I can't imagine it getting any better. It's better on my 13 foot screen than in the theater, easily. But I still scour thrift stores for DVDs every chance I get because even they are still valid and look great to me.

Mileage is a huge thing, man! That’s a thing for me as well is “how many times will I watch this movie a year?” Or something like that. I love watch special features and always love when a release ports over everything AND at the minimum adds a new commentary or something! Great conversation and topic, Christian!

For me 4k is cool but the picture quality isn't as noticable as VHS to DVD or DVD to Blu Ray. plus 4k is the only format i've ever had problems with discs freezing which is really annoying.

In a perfect world, all releases would come dual format 4k+blu.
But when forced to choose between one or the other, I pick new 4k scan bluray over a 4k disc all day....
Mostly due to having more access to bluray players than 4k players tbh tho lol.

I loved Prince Of Darkness and The Live on 4k, but my reference point was a 4-movie DVD set. As in 4 80s horror flicks on one DVD, including those 2. Haha, in cases like this when I'm upgrading from DVD or first time buys of movies I like, yes. 4k is great. I think I upgraded to 4k from a DVD for The Fog. Gigantic upgrade there.
There's also the times when the blu rays use old transfers, like the Halloween series, and the upgrade to 4k is kind of a no brainer. I double dipped on the Halloween 4k, since the one from Lionsgate was a total bust.
If the blu ray is a good one, I'll generally keep it. For instance, Criterion's Night Of The Living Dead. Same restoration, same special features, they didnt even add HDR, and that blu ray is a knockout. I just watched it last night and im still in shock with how goood it looks.

My main criteria is if it might enhance the experience of watching the film. I dont feel this is the case very often with 4K vs Blu-Ray. Not even on a 120 inch screen and monster surround system. From VHS to Laserdisc absolutely. From DVD to Blu-ray very much so, but not so much with 4K. I do buy them, especially if I dont have the film and also sometimes with the films I truly like. Your point about milage is very good! Thanks!

Great breakdown . Especially noting sentimental value . Some DVDs I keep just cause of sentimental value .
Some titles I get despite bad review such as The Abyss given it’s still best it’s ever looked or sounded on home video and will be years or over decade before another home video release .
I think it’s important to support those companies like scream factory or arrow as best we can during this shrinking market .

IT Follows 4K looks amazing on an OLED. Worth the upgrade. You should do a video on which 4K version to upgrade to if you have some experience with other versions. For example, Dog Soldiers 4K was released by Second Sight and Shout Factory. From what I have heard, the Second Sight version is much better.

I'm going on 58 and have loved DVD from day 1, came late to Blu-ray and never bothered with 4K in fact, I sometimes feel like I'm even downgrading with some Blu-rays. So basically, I very rarely 'upgrade' to other formats but am more than content with the way my favorite stuff looks on my upscaling Panasonic Blu-ray players they will do the job just nicely. Will I ever change my mind and go 4K, who knows not in a hurry to do so it depends on when the TV set dies... lol

Great stuff CHH. Correct on all points, upgrading is completely subjective. As a collector no one should be surprised if one upgrades for any reason. A quality example would be Predator. All the blue rays were total DNR. The 4K had the true film quality image. It just depends and again, completely subjective.

I think of the Donnie Darko limited editions from Arrow. I have both the 4K Limited Edition from 2021 AND the original Blu-ray Limited Edition from 2017. Content is essentially the same but I think the packaging and artwork for the 2017 LE is way nicer, I just couldn't part with it. Not a spot on the 2021 LE - it's certainly nice enough on its own - but the 2017 LE just captures the spirit of the movie a little better. For the Robocop and American Werewolf LE's, I totally kept the original 4K-scanned standard Blu-ray versions and just supplemented them with the non-LE 4K UHD versions when they came up for reasonable prices (and in the case of Robocop, I opted for the unique Steelbook edition instead). There is absolutely no reason to upgrade those versions - the packaging is identical. If I really wanted to save space, I could just slide the 4K disc into the Blu-ray LE and be done with it.

It's weird If I upgrade a movie it's because I watch it at least one time a year or I absolutely love the artwork or special features but most movies I'm buying on 4k for the first time because I was late to the game big big time but early to 4k

I will also upgrade any slashers to 4k just cuz lol. I also got lucky because I started collecting after 4k started so i have a lot less films I will have to upgrade as I am just buying the 4ks as my first purchase of the movie

We lose out and have to pay tons down road ….
I had 3500 movies now down to 1400
And I wanna have less and less
Cause I don’t watch them all realistically and it’s costing me too much

4k is overrated imo. A good scan of a film on Blu-ray is more than adequate. Especially for 70 and 80's horror films. These films in 4k just look to shiny and fake to be honest. Again, imo.

A quality 4K restoration actually replicates the original 35 millimeter film presentation more accurately than standard high definition does, but that's assuming the restoration artist does quality work. For instance Vinegar Syndrome's 4K restorations accurately mimic 35 mm film without overly polishing or manipulating the source materials.

The only people blind-buying & collecting entire boutique lines do it for bragging rights. Usually, they're UA-cam content creators. The saddest part is, they haven't even watched half of thier collection. Their content is literally commercials that display art cards & slipcases. How much/little they love the cover art is their only thoughts about the release.

Do what you want as long as you have the funds. I don’t, so I buy only what I like and know I’ll rewatch. That doesn’t make my approach any more superior, only more practical. @@modalsoul6511
