when i wanted to go for my C1 exams i practised by starting with movies and tv shows without subs and then moved on to reading an english newspaper i found in Athens. My last step was deciding to read full books without stopping to look at the dictionaries. It was a struggle for the first year but soon after I was able to have a good reading flow. now almost 10 years later i only enjoy reading my books in english. My contact with English became so constant that for more than 5 years my inner thoughts are in English now and in matters of talking with terms regarding my work and studies (computer science stuff) I'm even better with English than what I am with my mother language. Now I'm learning German, after 6 months of trying to learn I have finally managed to be able to have basic conversations with random people on the street and understand most things while attending conferences although it does take up energy to do so. My first reading steps were reading comics and a children's fairytale book in German. My next planned step is to buy a teenager type of book in German and start reading :)
1. Kindle, set your language. 2. Do you ever dream in English? When I was 2 or 3 the lady who babysat me was German. Later they went back to Germany. In high school I started taking German and I knew words, once exposed to them, that I should not have known. Additionally, I have been dreaming in German, occasionally, for most of my life. This is why I asked. I have always wondered if simply learning another language will result in a person dreaming in that language or if it's related to my Early Childhood that I do not remember. Thank you
I think the best way is to learn a language is the way you learn your native language. (I know we can't be around someone who speaks German Everyday) Which skype and try making friend through like social media could help with that. There are many ways to learn.
Your better at English than i am! I'm Austrian and my teacher told my class its MANDATORY for us to have to know how to speak English. It's the international language. I started learning it in grade 7. I'm in grade 10 now. I still make mistakes
I use Duolingo as well. And Tinycards. They are adorable apps that make learning new languages fun. Classes here in the states are expensive and clash with my work schedule so unfortunately not an option for me, but if you have the time and the money, I still think actual classes are the best way to learn. For me, I have a little teaching experience so I can just buy the curriculum materials that they use in classrooms here and teach myself. It also helps to have friends who speak whatever language you are trying to learn. UA-cam channels can be great for that stuff too if you don’t know anyone in person who speaks the language you are trying to learn. Also, keep at it, don’t give up, never stop learning. 🤘🏻❤️
well i think you summed it up pretty well. I learned english at first in school of course and later i continued to read english books. I read 'Lord of the Rings' in english and some other books by J.R.R. Tolkien that are not available in German or weren't at that time, like the book of lost tales and the history of 'The Lord of the Rings'. So i think that advice is a good one. Use something you are interested in and do it in the language you want to learn. I must admit that i don't look up all the words i don't know instead i try to get their meaning from the context. For me it also was the curiosity to know what all these english songs lyrics are about that kept my interest in the english language during and after school. I'm not talking much in english though but understanding native speakers and writing in English works pretty well.
You have done a wonderful job learning English. I like that you give lots of tips. I think your insight is valuable. I especially like your sense of humor. I live in Florida and there are lots of German tourists. I can usually tell they are from Germany by the way they go crazy for the sunshine ;[)
I think your English is amazing. When I first heard you speak, I thought you were an American. You have an almost undetectable accent which sounds like it might even be a regional American accent.
Ich habe an meinem Deutsch gearbeitet. You speak better English than many Americans that consider themselves "more American" than others, solely because of the color of their skin. Also sei stolz auf dich selbst mein freund. 👏 Awesome English skills and very easy accent to understand. 👍
I learned German in school when I was 11 and I really liked it but my teacher didn't seem to care about my interest so I dropped the classes when I was 14. I never lost interest in learning German or visiting Germany and I still have my old German phrase book which I still read from time to time. In my old job when I served customers I would always try and talk to the German customers who seemed very happy to hear me talk to them in German. :)
One of things I like to do, is watch a film I know with German dubbing and with the German subtitles. So I can see how the word is spelt and sounds at the same time. Great video by the way.
Im a massive history buff (especially about WW2 and all German history for that matter) and want to travel around Germany to learn as much as possible on my own, read actual history documents, and watch speeches. It's truly a fascinating culture and learning the language could help me truly get emersed in the history.
As a native English speaker, I found it easiest to turn to music, since it is a topic I can stand behind. I was really into bands and artists Tokio Hotel, Subway to Sally, Die Killerpilze, LaFee, and Wizo when I was first beginning to teach myself German. I also found it best to first learn the alphabet and your video on that was rather helpful. I have just recently began to start teaching myself again since I stepped away from it for some time.
Thank you for the websites! I want to get back into studying spanish and french, but I want to start studying German. It'll be different (and probably difficult) doing it by myself but this was encouraging and helpful
I'm learning German using an app called Duolingo. Sounds weird but it's excellent. I learned a lot; I'm starting to be able to read the language. Plus your channel has been a huge help.
Skyping is easy, the hard part for me was always finding native speakers. For me, I would start with listening to music in my target language, because I love music anyway, and then progress to watching movies, interviews, anything where the speech is a speaking speed. Duolingo helps with some things, but I end up learning specific words and phrases that don't necessarily apply to real life, such as taking the French course and having to translate "L'ours orange lit un journal!" Because I'm sure I'll have a chance to tell someone in French that the orange bear is reading a newspaper. Having had a few German boyfriends, I've noticed they weren't keen on speaking German with me because they were more interested in practicing their English with me than in helping me learn their language. Alas. 🙄
Weird question, but how would I go about gaining an audience in german rap when I don’t know any Germans over there, and I live in California (lol)? I have been learning german in all the ways you have mentioned, but I decided about 3 months ago to add rapping in german as a way to force myself to look up vocabulary in a proactive way as opposed to waiting on the apps to get to certain subjects. I feel like it has been going great! I ended up making a whole project out of it, but don’t know how to reach german people in a way that would seem genuine to them.. Anyway, probably no answer to that, but if there are any Germans reading this who listen to german hip hop and would give me some honest feedback, hit me up 🤙.. Just trynna get Germanized 😂🇩🇪💯
An app called ‘Memrise’ is good - like Duolingo it is free but then you can get extras if you pay. Got me to A1 German in about 2 months ish. Only downside is it doesn’t teach sentence structure which I find hard.
Duolingo is a tremendous help. It has it's downsides, but there's usually detailed explanations to any questions you might have in the comments. If you're just now starting, it's great. Also, tell us about the anime. :D
Your english is really well. Many Germans have strict German accent when they speak in English. But you have much less. I guess it's because you started to learn English very early.
People whose main complaint is that they can't improve on their German because they're not around native speakers enough do have one very good option. Most of the television stations from Germany can be accessed through the internet such as RTL and Das Erste..There they'll find local news programs, soap operas, and other television shows. I'm sure there must be a few German radio stations that you can stream. And, then, there's Skype which can help with the learning process if you wanted to make something like a "pen pal." You have options.
First a thought on HIHI's comment. I agree Dominick, you speak English well...personally if I met you on the street I would not pick out your accent as German. European, yes but nothing like a Scandinavian accented English (no offence intended). Your speech would fit in any of the northern or mid-western parts of the US. I have trouble with some of our southern accents.. I know a German accent when I hear one as many of my older Uncles spoke German as a first language, and had pronounced accents though they were 3 generation US citizens. My mothers side was Norwegian so I do know a Scandinavian accent. Dad called us kids Gerwegians. ; ) Some very good Ideas on how to further ones language skills. danke.
I wonder if you could make an informal video that explains the different pronunciation skills that make native English speakers sound foreign to German speakers. Also could you please talk about den adjectives. Like ihren Stein, etc. I found those completely confusing, thanks!!
No lurking? . . . Take the shirt off! lol I'm sorry j/k but isn't that an HP shirt you're hiding there? :P You're funny :) It is frustrating when you can't find the words for what you want to say! Duolingo and mindsnacks has been quite helpful for me.
I'm in a relationship with a German and while he offers to teach me German, I'm doing the studying on my own and just asking him questions on certain things that don't make sense. I agree with not depending on your boyfriend/girlfriend for teaching the language.
Ich liebe deutsch. My grandmother was from Germany and she taught me some words and phrases but I forgot most of it. I've picked up a few more here and there but I've only recently started taking German language classes. Are there any movies or shows on Netflix (or whatever) that have German speaking? So far I've only found a few, such as "PJ Masks".
🙂 Good job learning English. I'm learning the "the Germ." (as we call it here in California - a German derived person) from your video lectures. Thank you. I'm actually working for a German home owner here in North America. I have both English-Dutch and "Germ." and Italian ancestry myself. And this year I will go to visit Germany as an English American.
Good school teachers and education, even though I didn't had really english in the 7th and 8th grade. Und ja, den Anfang habe ich auf Twitter geschrieben😁
Dude, thanks for your videos. Danke für deine videos. Ich bin ein anfänger mit Deutch. Also ich möchte? meinne Deutch verbessen. Ich werde ein geschenk aus England schicken. Nothing weird :-/.
Before I forget again, I wanted to ask, what do German's think of Native Americans? I mean what do they think they know about them? Do they know they still live on reservations? I always ask this question to my friends from other countries
In my case, the biggest improvement in speaking or learning the language was because i realized how bad German voice actors or translations were. So i just started watching absolutely everything in english or (atleast Anime) watch everything with english subtitles. I also translated that to gaming, its just so much better and obviously the biggest positive effect is that you can talk to people almost everywhere in the world. I don´t speak english 100% fluent and i still make ALOT mistakes..especially in grammar but it works and im fine with that. In my opinion english should be learned in every country, atleast as a second language. It would make so much things waaaay easier.
I’ve never dated a foreigner :( but of course I’d try to master his language before dating him (no matter if he also speaks English besides his language) and it wouldn’t be fun if he took me as a teacher in Spanish
But my favourite genre isn't shonen.. slice of life and romance is so good, but it seem to be very boring for all the other people I talk to about Anime :v
I've been using the Deutsche Welle app and also their website. They have free german courses and a lot of useful stuff. To help me with vocabulary I've been using Google Translate and Duden. I hope I can pay german course this year. In the video you suggest watching movies or series in the language you're learning. Do you think it's better to watch the whole thing in german (german audio and subtitles) or it might be better one or the other? I think I tried to do it with the german audio once and english subs but I get paying attention to the subs. Thanks for the vid!

Nichts für ungut, aber Englisch für Deutsche ist ein Fach, das sie in der 5. Klasse oder früher lernen beginnen. Best is to change the language of the Facebook into the language you are learning
Ahmet Murati I do that with video games.
DW which is a german equivalent of BBC has many great free german courses. I definitely recommend it. Right now I am use Nicos Weg.

Your English is outstanding! Incredible!!! Almost no accent...very good...
Thanks for the great ideas. Some seem so simple, but I just had not thought of them!!
The post-it notes? The act of writing helps. In general ,we remember(if 1 time) ~20-25% of what we hear, ~50% of what we see, & ~90% of what we do .
I learned German in school when I was 11 and I really liked it but my teacher didn't seem to care about my interest so I dropped the classes when I was 14. Learning English takes a few years and...
Learning German takes a lifetime :(
Aber das ist für mich sehr interessant! 😊👍🏼
vinny septika sehr fuckin richtig

Picking up German children's books works as well! Sounds silly but, if you're just starting to learn, I found that it's helped. ;)

Ben Askham Yes! It’s really good for learning vocabulary and phrases, but the lack of grammar teaching is a bit of a letdown.
Your English is excellent! Your slang is more American (actually more big city slang like New York than other areas of the country) than English (UK).
Duolingo is a tremendous help. It has it's downsides, but there's usually detailed explanations to any questions you might have in the comments. If you're just now starting, it's great.

You can find the anime list in the video description! :)
Get Germanized ah, I looked, but must have missed it, thanks :)

I gotta find myself a German soap opera lol
German I will learn you and you won't stop me! 😫😥😫😥
I used Rosetta Stone for Hebrew. I learned a lot, learned to speak it correctly. And it is seriously expensive.
crazy hahah like you mentioned in the video , if l argue with someone auf deutsch ,l have no time to consider "Deklination"

Good school teachers and education, even though I didn't had really english in the 7th and 8th grade.
Dude, thanks for your videos. Danke für deine videos. Ich bin ein anfänger mit Deutch. Also ich möchte? meinne Deutch verbessen. Ich werde ein geschenk aus England schicken. Nothing weird :-/.
Haha, I added my comment as a reply to Chrisler Cool. Es tut mir leiden Chrisler (I'm a twat 😯)

Vielen Dank :)
Ahhhhh!!!!! Nooooooo!!!!! Baby has suddenly gone grey!!!!! (Hug) it will be OK!!!!
I’ve never dated a foreigner :( but of course I’d try to master his language before dating him (no matter if he also speaks English besides his language) and it wouldn’t be fun if he took me as a teacher in Spanish
Hada MariSa haha I have never dated a citizen of my country, germany^^ only foreigners so far^^
I have a question. Does one need to have knowledge of German to apply for a student visa?
There are some courses that are entirely in English
Danke Deutscher
Der Lehrer (die Lehrerin?) hatte ganz recht: wenn Sie eine Sprache lernst, sind Sie verpflichtet, sie zu gebrauchen.
Best Anime is Naruto - Fight me ;3
But my favourite genre isn't shonen.. slice of life and romance is so good, but it seem to be very boring for all the other people I talk to about Anime :v
what are the best anime series in your opinion?

Where's Get Germanized's list of anime?
In the video description :)
Ah! I thought you said it would be in the comments, so I didn't even look in the description.
I really like SAO too, but for some reason, people like to rag on it like it's Nickelback in anime form.
I have all of Cowboy Bebop on DVD, including the feature film.
You're the second person (both European, dunno if that matters) to recommend "Your Name" to me. Guess I'll hafta watch it.
Jaaaa, du Hilfreicher Hund, du!
You still sound German, but your English is pretty good. The one problem I noticed is the way you speak sentences. Sometimes they seem to complete as odd as that sounds. But I am not a perfectionist by any means and wouldn't complain
In German sentences tend to be REALLY long so I guess I still do that in English as well, haha.
I will say, I like how Germans filter some words out depending on the sentence, we should combine the 2 languages and call it Germish
Did you mean too*?
I what to go to Germany but I don't what to get sick get GERMany sorry
