Hi! My name is Loretta, a girl from the U.S. who moved to Japan! I'm here on the MEXT scholarship program as a graduate student, studying to get a Masters in Business Administration. Here are some answers to common questions:

I've found that phlegm is normally used to talk about mucous in the throat, and not so much in your nose.
I also agree. I have never heard it in the context of a stuffed nose.
Yes, definitely not snot or from the nose. But specifically, it’s the stuff you cough up out of your lungs. Like, if you go into the doctor with a bad cough and she asks you if you have a “productive” cough and then she asks you what the color of your phlegm was (clear, yellow, green etc.) to help determine if you have a lung infection. Phlegm comes up from the lungs whereas mucus usually flows down the throat from the nasal passages.
I've never heard it in any context besides Ginny Weasley saying it about Fleur delacour

With sixth, you can actually say "six" + move your tongue to the bottom of your top-front teeth for the "th" sound. It sort of a nuance that not everyone enunciates very well: usually people just sort of mash the x and th together.

As a non native from both english and japanese it was pretty fun to see how even "simple" words can be tricky, especially japanese ones like 漢字 or 納豆, but also Sixth and Rural in english.

You're one of my main inspirations for starting to seriously study the language, as seeing someone like me becoming so good at it made me feel like I could actually do it too. About "Sixth Sense":
I'm not a native English speaker, but when pronouncing the words I basically pronounce them like this:
Six = siks
Sixth = sikth
so "Sikth Sense" :P

I often hear "sixth" without the 's' sound from the x, so it becomes like 'sikth'.
I always pronounced Natto the Japanese way and people thought I was saying it wrong I cant wait to rub this in everyone's face😂😂
I think when speaking English it'd make more sense to pronounce it "wrong" like NAtto because it def sounds more like English than naTTO. You'll end up sounding like Hermione Granger. It's leveOHsa, not levioSAH lol

That was thoroughly entertaining, it's obvious you had a blast and thank you for taking us along for a ride! I knew about pitch accent (that's what subscribing to Dogen for subtitled Japanese jokes does to you) though considered it a rather advanced topic. But goodness, it's already in the friggin' word for KANJI! and the dreaded NATTO!
Related or not, there's a whole school of thought in Russian linguistics on the communicative aspects of intonation. They have a whole catalogue of intonation patterns where uttering the same word with different patterns may have drastic effects, up to a complete reversal of meaning, but mostly communicates where you stand in relation to other party and the situation being discussed. It was fascinating to me that a straight non-tonal, stress-accented language like Russian had this whole 'nuther layer. Amazing how much can go overlooked if it is has no expression in writing.

you can say sik-th sense instead of six-th. i've heard a lot of natives pronounce it that way and sometimes i do too, depending on the speed i'm speaking at lol
but for the proper way, i myself think of it as keeping my tongue at the forefront of my mouth so it's easier to move onto the "sense" part of the word. maybe practicing going from "s" to "th" back to "s"in one breath will help with this word. i hope this helps!
English is a very forgiving language for pronunciation and even technology is designed to recognize heavily accented English (meaning non native accented) so it’s not surprising that Siri recognized everything.

I am not native English, but perhaps saying the TH separately after SIX (but closely) would help.
To me, the problem is not the X-TH consonant cluster, but the transition from TH to S in the word "sense".
Native speaker here. In the case of "sixth sense", I would just say it as "sixss sense" with an elongated "s" sound, otherwise it just falls apart. However, if the sentence were "He finished sixth in the race", then the "th" is definitely pronounced. This is just how I would do it, though.

Just a tip, for the th sound the tongue needs to go against the teeth. This will help you in getting the pronunciation correct,. The th coming right after the x is difficult in pronunciation for many. You did great!
This really depends on regional dialects I think. In most American dialects “sixth sense” doesn’t have a th sound. Also, “rural” can be pronounced with or without the second r depending on the region.

@@Untwinxer Being from the southern US, I've heard both ways, but the majority I've heard drop the th. The r in rural is more 50/50 in my experience.

Hi :) I feel like for "sixth," the key to the "th" sound at the end is to let your tongue end up between your front teeth (between both the top and bottom jaws) almost as though you are about to stick your tongue out, but it doesn't actually go out of your mouth, it just slightly surpasses your front teeth. Sixth is usually either pronounced /sɪkθ/ or /sɪkst/. I personally do the latter

I feel like Akkie-san has an advantage probably because smartphone assistants for English anyway are very forgiving with pronunciation..
Where as I think in Japanese, the Assistant not only has to grab the word (like if it was being typed out in romaji) but also attach kanji out of a wide variety that could sound similar but not necessarily be correct. Basically pitch in japanese is a handicap (disadvantage) in this game. ^^"
7:56 unless you're saying it word by word, the th in "sixth" gets elided due to being between two /s/ sounds.

Sixth is a tough word. When enunciating it on its own, it sounds different than when you say it at speed. If I were speaking to Siri, I would exaggerate the -th sound at the end, separating clearly the “six” and the “th” sounds with a steady vibration of air on the lisping -th. But when saying “sixth sense” at speed, it’s like a you have to pick up your tongue in the middle and move the whole thing forward a tiny bit and also do a flick of your tongue. It’s near impossible to explain.

A Japanese friend of mine moved to the States and one of his first addresses was "Dahlia Street." Then he moved to "Berkeley Place." He just couldn't catch a break! This was my favorite of your videos that I've seen. Hilarious, so much fun, and helpful too (I"m now pronouncing 漢字 differently!) P.S. Regarding "sixth," I think most native speakers would pronounce the "th" if the sentence ends with "sixth." "How did you do (in the race)?" "I was sixTH." However, if you said "I finished in sixth place" I don't think you would hear the "th" sound. Same with "sixth sense." People either don't pronounce the "th" at all (I suspect in most cases) or if it is there, it is barely audible. Native speakers may TELL you they pronounce it, but when you observe what people are actually SAYING when they aren't thinking about it, I think the sound is dropped. BTW, I'm speaking about American English. I don't know how it is in British English.

Honestly, whenever I say that word I end up saying something like "sikth" and people understand me fine.
Snot is more specifically from your nose, phlegm is from your throat. Both are a type of mucous.
I have been speaking half-baked Japanese since I lived in Japan in the 1980s and 1990s. I never went to school, never formally learned the structure of grammar, and can barely read Kanji at a (grammar school) first grade level. My conversations are all simple, day-to-day basic conversations that are needed to get by in life. In fact, I mostly learned Japanese by listening to what was going on around me and then by having a few drinks to get over being too self-conscious to try it myself. But still, I have been speaking it for decades and finally got to the point where I felt fairly comfortable doing so. About a month ago, I found out there was a such thing as Japanese Pitch Accent and I went down the rabbit hole of trying to learn it. Now I am so nervous about my pronunciation that I'm afraid to try speaking Japanese at all, much the same way I was when I first started.
I think that's called the Dunning Kruger effect: when someone is so bad at something, they aren't even good enough to know they are bad.
Turns out Duo Lingo is actually pretty good for these pronunciations. If you listen enough times you can tell they follow the same pitches.

tip for pronouncing "sixth" : theres an abrupt stop of airflow after the "x" and a small flick of your tongue that closes on your teeth to get the subtle "th" at the end.

My tip for saying "Sixth Sense" is this: the faster you say it, the more simple you can make the middle. If I'm saying it at full speed in a normal conversation, I pronounce it like "Siksssense", and I hold an 's' sound in the middle a bit longer than normal.

One of my favorite things to do is pronounce the katakana spelling of Earl Grey as if I have no idea how to pronounce Japanese because it comes out as aroogooray, which both sounds kind of gross and is extremely fun to say.
No I don't do this I'm public but I do call climbing Mt Fuji 'going up the fooj' and I won't apologize it's my culture
