Your Japanese is really good OMG you go girl. You're really a good example of how one should learn Japanese. It's rare to see someone actually has put an effort into learning a language. Japanese is a hard language though, but I guess you were only about that one language, so you learned it well and reached high level. You're really smart. Amazing, this is worth watching.

Thank you for watching! As for languages, not exactly! My main language for my thesis/degree was Georgian. I also studied Mandarin, in addition to a survey of many critical languages for my degree work. Japanese is just my first second language, and what did well on UA-cam 😂. Do you like languages?

HI! I'm a beginner in learning Japanese, I haven't gotten the chance to take the class that my high school offers because it never fit into my required classes, so I'm trying my best to learn it on my own. The 5 min plot twist sparked my interest immediately, especially because of the furigana! I've been struggling a lot with Kanji, trying to find the best ways to learn or memorize them, and I've been looking for a book that would help me. When I downloaded Satori reader I found the hospital dialogues, which I can't wait to read because I have a big interest in Health and wellness. Sorry this is so long and thank you so much for making your videos I have become a big fan!

Where was this video when I went to the bookstore an hour ago?! I saw 5分後に以外な結末 series while I was there, and was heavily debating if I should take one.
I sadly did not, instead I got 赤毛のアン (the manga version). It seemed something good for elementary students and I saw kanji that I recognized.
But despite not knowing if I got a book for my level, I found this video very helpful, especially because as a major book addict, I hope that these tips will help me develop a reading habit in Japanese.

I've tried to learn japanese on my own and given up many times because I haven't found a fun enough learning method. I can appreciate the importance of the tried and proven studying methods like flashcards and repetition, but THIS right here (fun stories in a language that isn't my first) is what really keeps me engaged and motivated. Afterall, I learned english with fanfiction and videogames lol, so light novels are the way to go for me! Thank you for the recommendations! ありがとございます!

I only read the Kimi no Na wa and I thoroughly enjoyed it. The story is the exact same as the book, but the switching between characters is done perfectly. There are quotes from the RADWIMPS songs and the どんでん返し are only discovered after you turn the page, so you can't even spoil it by mistake. It's just a very good read :)

Those 5 minute books look crazy interesting. On my last trip to san diego i bought a book in japanese but i always get put off by trying to read something full length. I checked out satori reader and started reading the interviews. I like reading those kinds of interactions because of the keigo differences.

On the studying side of things, the fact that the 君の名は book is written in the first person is especially interesting because of what it brings to the table via its story: there's a boy and a girl, so they both speak in different gender-based styles, but they're also from different regions, so they both speak in different dialects.

Thank you so much for the tips. I’m currently in love with Kona’s big adventure on Satori reader. It keeps me engaged because I love cats, also I have two black cats so I feel connected to Kona in a way. I have no idea how to gain access to Amazon Japan as a person living in the US. Making the leap from intermediate to fluent reading really is a struggle... What I find most challenging, living outside Japan, is finding appropriate reading material since what I tend to choose is either too difficult or too easy most of the time ^^" Thank you for all the wonderful recommendations, though!

It's light hearted and relatively easy to read (never thought I would be saying that!!). The books i’ve been reading the most on Satori reader is “Akiko’a American Foreign Exchange.” It’s simple and very charming. The second book I’ve read is “Secret,”through this book i’ve Learned how hard it is for me to pronounce sleepwalking or somnambulism in Japanese. If I were to buy one of the books you’ve mentioned in the video it would most likely be the 5 minute twist. I love twist and mystery so it would probably be a good choice to buy.

    1. I would love to read 5分後に笑えるどんでん返し because I love short stories and laughing!
    2. "Streetside Interviews" looks interesting... I like watching interviews and learning about the culture/society. Since the format is all in 1st person dialogue with a mix of polite questions and conversational sentences, I think it would help me improve comprehension when watching interviews and also help me build sentences during most conversations, especially after shadowing.
I'm the same - I loooove the feel of physical books (if I had access to book-off, I would need another room to store my books haha), but an app that has native audio, furigana toggle, 1-click definitions, review capability, and offline support is so convenient there's no excuse for not finding a few mins to improve our reading skills! I actually added the Satori Reader website to my bookmarks years ago, and I'm so glad I rediscovered it through your video. Thank you for sharing your tips and doing this giveaway. Looking forward to more videos! 🙂

I can relate to these kind of stories so I love it, even do i am still at the second part of the story. I love reading. At home in my parents house we have more than 2000 books and I am happy to say, that I read at least more than 50% of those books.
Satori Reader is amaizing. it helps me learning kanji's while I relax and read.
7 Habits of Highly Effective People is what I am most exited about, however I have to say, that it was a hard decision, because all your recommendations sounded really intresting. I am reading ちはやふる。I did not realise it, but the manga actually fits your reading recommendation: first person, topic that interests me (百人一首) and its a story I pretty familiar with because I have seen two seasons of the anime. Last week I finished read the first volume and felt great. I moved unto the second volume and was caught by surprise because the furigana was gone for most words. 😰😰😰 But I actually just circled the words I did not know and tried to keep going or guess the meaning by the radicles and what was happening in the context. Thanks for your advice. I think i will also try Satori Reader.

I also have the 「君の名は」 novel but I hadn't started because I was worried it would be too difficult at my level to read novels. I might watch the movie first so I know Im following along correctly then start on it.
I have started reading 「同居人はひざ、とこどき頭のうえ」recently and it was so relatable. I like that it shows a character who was indifferent to a cat but learned to love their quirks, but then the funny perspective of his actions from the cat's perspective.
I love and prefer paperback books (so much so I never buy digital textbooks for school), but I'll probably get a subscription to Satori Reader because its not always comfortable for me to read on the train with a physical book since my train line is almost always busy.

My favorite was the 7 habits book! I actually own the English version of it and I loved how it brought a newer perspective to some thing that I wouldn't have thought of before.
For satori reader I actually thought the no smoking seating reading was the most practical and interesting for me. I'm a FOODIE and I have a particularly sensitive nose so smoke would definitely be problematic. I'm not used to the concept of people being able to smoke indoors so I think this would be really useful!

I would love the 5 minute Plot Twist story & I enjoy reading the StreetSide Interviews on Satori Reader! I've been looking into a lot of current Japanese news/issues in preparation for the MEXT scholarship & find it hard to focus on actual street side interview vlogs/articles regarding the topics. But the articles on Satori Reader are phenomenal!

I would loooove to try out that 5 minute series. The plot twist sounds super cool! As for Satori Reader, the Neighbor is my favorite story on there. Even though my Japanese level isn’t very high, the author does an amazing job of setting the tone and really creeping me out. It’s perfect for anyone who loves a thriller.

We used to learn about the seven habits in elementary school. I can probably still name them:
    Be proactive
Begin with the end in mind
    Put first things first
    Think win-win
Seek first to understand then to be understood
    Synergise
    Sharpen the saw
i don’t know if they’re different wording in japan or if the adult is different from the kids version though

Hi Kemushi! I'm most interested in 5 Minute Series or Your Name, though the former sounds a bit less intimidating. I also really appreciated your recommendation for Satori Reader-Hole in the Wall was the most interesting for me, and the narration was fun. I might consider upgrading the package, so always good to have a discount code!
I liked your point about first person vs third person. When I was in Japan I got the entire Harry Potter series in Japanese in hardcover (as one does) but I've struggled to get much more past the first page, and I might have tried to run before I could walk. I had also grabbed the first Hunger Games novel, and if I remember right that should be in first person, so maybe a better start (or maybe I should avoid novels until my Japanese improves a bit more, but it's also kinda fun to challenge yourself, right?).

    For the giveaway:
I absolutely LOVE plot twists so I'm super interested in reading the 5-minute stories!! Also, it's hard for me to focus on long stories sometimes so something short and sweet sounds right up my alley :3
I downloaded satori reader so fast once you mentioned it lol i finished up the advanced Japanese course at my uni so I've been kind of at a loss with how to keep going so as not to lose what I've learned so far. I've checked out Hole in the Wall bc I saw an animal on the front cover and it's so friggin' cute so far (and it's in first pov!!!).
    Much love, x

I absolutely love Satori reader; I treat myself to a month every now and then when I can afford and binge read an entire series. 今壁の穴が大好き。優しくて可愛いネズミの話はすごく興味深いと思う。その上、恋人という話を読み上げったーその終わりはめっちゃ気持ち悪かったー楽しかった。(I found the ending really creepy but totally enjoyed it!). I want to read 'Secret' next. I've also read Kona and secretly hope for more cat stories.
I love the sound of the 5min plot twist books; I try and read every morning so some fun short stories would be a great way to go. I have some 10 min stories but they are written in third person which (i agree) is much trickier - I thought swapping to first person is great advice. It is nice to hear they have furigana too - total lack of kanji I find harder, but the support of furigana means less time with the kanji dictionary/app.
Thank you as well for talking about that 'stuck in intermediate' feeling - I feel like I need to drag myself into more fluency but it is such a mountain to climb sometimes - there is always so much to do. At the moment, I am focusing of finishing Integrated approach book, but that means less time for compositions etc. which I really miss doing and am losing a bit of confidence with.
I am really going to try your approach to reading - I always try and translate everything and then get fed up and frustrated - I think this will help me to trust myself more.
Thanks for the video today. I was super useful.

I've tried out satori reader before and because I'm a sucker for romance stories I loved the story about sakura and suzuki's long distance relationship. Also the book I'd want to read would be the five minuet plot twist series. It seems like it would be a fun read plus I also struggle with kanji so the furigana would help.

The scream lesson or fear lesson 「絶叫学級・ぜっきょうがっきゅう」 series is also really good. Its for 4-6th grade elementary students so most words have furigana, but not anything that you should know if you`ve studied Genki I / MNN I/ wanikani lvl 20. They`re decently scary and have useful vocab for everyday life. The only thing is the main characters are elementary school students so their speech is a little rude for adults, and its written in 3rd person.

But I'm going to get 7 Habits of highly Effective People since I've read that already.

It's my goal to read all of the Harry Potter books in Japanese. I'm halfway through the first one. Loretta's advice is spot on. I also found that the first few pages were the hardest, so to those of you who are reading your first novel in Japanese, try to not get frustrated. The reading gets easier as you become accustomed to the author's writing style. I think this is true of reading in our native languages as well, it just doesn't stand out to us as much. For example, if a novel introduces, say, 5 characters on the first two pages, I have to take time to figure out who is who, even in English. Thank you for a great video :)

I was just in SoCal a few weeks ago (where they have a few BookOff stores, some of which have a lot of great stuff), and wish I had known about this series to see if they had them then (back in Detroit where... 無理だなあ!). Satori Reader looks like such an awesome resource. I want to check out "Morning Reflection," because what a better theme for 朝の読書運動 than trying to figure out what transpired the evening before? Plus, if it's too scary, I have the whole day to get the shivers out and it hopefully won't keep me up at night!

I’m devastated because there used to be a thrift Japanese bookstore in my city, but because it hadn’t been raking up too much profit, the owner decided to close his store for good. There were lots of books in perfect condition for insanely low prices-complete works of Haruki Murakami, complete sets of manga, and magazines. I didn’t get to buy any light novels because the last time I’d been there, I was too focused on spending my money on manga. Now I buy kindle ebooks instead.
