I don't know. They could still play their music when they go on stern and be themselves. I guess maybe I'm just specifically referring to Billy Joe. I see him on stern these days and he is like a shell of himself when he is performing. I'm not sure if he is tired, or maybe just thinks it's embarrassing to actually put the same kind of intense, real emotion into their performances as he once did. I'm not saying trey needs to push his drum set down and fall over at the end of a song, or that Billy needs to be as wild and crazy as when he was a teenager. I feel like there is a happy medium but maybe life just beats you down. I really think that might be it. Covid + just the situation of the entire world. Maybe you lose that spark after all these years. Here's to seeing another performance like this but in 2023!

But they were not demanding it, just requesting. Billy Joe took it the wrong way and they did this song instead. Which was bleep completely on its original broadcast. Needless to say Gary had to deal with a very upset program director, Tom Chiasano, while Howard hid in his office.
So glad this is finally on UA-cam. This performance was legendary to a fresh new hardcore punk fan like I was when I first heard it on a Howard Stern music special.

Never been the biggest fan of them, but revisited Nimrod, and recently discovered Insomniac (yes, waaay late), and I gotta say: those are some really good albums. Especially Insomniac- so good. And Platypus, man, this is a hard song; I really enjoy Billy’s yells here. So cathartic.
Tre almost has a look on his face like, are we really going to do this? And then is like I don't care I'm in, let's do this, and they tear through. The bass slaps. The way he wraps the cable around his arm. The whole thing is a pure symphony of beauty.
this song is painful to play no matter which instrument you decide to approach it from just so you know. "Cause i hate you" is what you scream cause your arms, your legs or vocal chords are derailing like a train falling off a cliff.
If you're referring to 0:47..he doesn't mess up. He drops a stick. You can see a split second later in the background that he has to grab another... which I guess can be thought of as mess up. But in a different sense
Billie was definitely venting here. And I’m all for it. I’m sure this era was really frustrating for them though. Being overshadowed by a bunch of the bands that basically ripped them off.
So check this. The drummer is playing triplets on the hi hat! Every time you see the stick go down he's tapping the hi hat three times. He's one of the fastest single bass kick drummers in the world and highly under rated.

It went out live at 930 am on the most popular radio show of the day in the middle of the biggest fcc crackdown on profanity on the radio in history. It was amazing.

I'm not a huge fan of the band so I'm not sure what the big hit was at a time but playing platypus was kind of their way of saying fuck you, we'll play whatever we want. I remember the Stern show talking about it and it turned into a whole big deal in the hallway. Either way, badass performance
