  • Great hollowbody guitar on the inexpensive side? Let's find out! I enjoy Epiphone guitars but we are gonna try to find anything wrong with it.

I have a Broadway (the regular one, not the Elitist) I bought in Guitar Center in Brooklyn back in 2007. I originally wanted to buy a Casino, but ended up also trying 3 different Broadways off the wall. The one I walked away with sounded completely different than the other two. Louder and much sweeter and the body was much more resonant than the others. The other two were okay, roughly what you expect from a cheap asian brand, but this one was so much better. I ended up liking it much more than the Casino as well. I am very happy with my personal Broadway, but I am not sure If I'd recommend to buy it online.
Also, a recommendation: If you buy a cheap Epiphone guitar, bring it to a luthier and say you want a bone nut. This is an upgrade you will notice in tone. Much more than a pickup upgrade, in my opinion.

I like this review, especially the critique of the bridge pickup. Too many sellers will glow about every aspect of a guitar... I like this kind of honesty. And your playing makes the review better too! Thanks.

Yeah, this is an issue with bridge pickups on hollowbodies in general. They tend to be harsh, sort of honky. The more hollow an electric guitar is, the more upper harmonics the bridge pickup has. So it goes like this in descending order: 17 inch archtops (like a Tal Farlow) >16 inch (ES-175) > ES 330 > ES 335 > Les Paul.

I love guitars like this provided they have good pick ups for jazz and the fact they are priced under $1,000 is an opportunity for me to purchase them .like come on give a guy a break guitars over $999.99 are to steep for some people's budget. I rather leave the guitar collecting dust than going over my means and then have it stolen. The fact that where I live trying to keep a pricey guitar in my neighborhood or collection for that matter is slim.

I'm thinking about buying one from ZZounds but those frets look awfully high, I'm use to frets on a vintage Gibson solid body with low frets, I've played the high fret guitars of today and when I slide my fingers on the fretboard it feels like I'm going over railroad tracks, but I will be playing a Merl Travis, Chet Atkins style and I'll learn a little jazz, what do you think?

The rubber grommet that the switch is mounted to isn’t stolen from Ibanez. It’s a Gibson thing. Gibson started doing that in the ‘60s on their archtop guitars. The reason is that it isolates the switch, thereby reducing the amount of noise from changing switch positions getting picked up by the pickups.

Good value for the money. Sometimes you get build quality issues. I would suggest 2 swapouts: A bone nut, and Classic 57 Gibson pups. And you have a poor man's L5.

The 500 is the better buy in most conditions. YOu'll also fine more of them for less. Buying tip, if you find a European dealer, you MAY find it cheaper for the cost of shipping plus an extra 200$ CDN.
