Great DIY video. And you motivated me to re-engineer my slat bed base. I couldn't afford a commercial adjustable bed either, but I have rebuilt my slat base with the raised head and leg sections at the height that I found the most comfortable for me. Not adjustable, but it only has to suit me and now I am going to rest my poor aching back :-)
The mattress appears to be too thick and inflexible to follow the contour of the section below your knees. It's a neat construction idea and I thank you for posting it. The biggest concern I have, is that if I woke in the middle of the night and felt uncomfortable, I wouldn't feel inclined to get out of bed to find a tool to do the change.
That's my main thought, though that's gonna be the case for anything that doesn't have a motor... I'm thinking if I'm uncomfy enough, I'd get myself up and readjust it, I wish the electric ones were more reasonably priced (or even the manual ones)... It seems unlikely the cost is really justified, it's just what people are willing to pay, so I guess that's still fair, I'd guess most people who are seriously considering an adjustable bed aren't going to consider attempting it on their own, either because they've got the money to put towards the luxury, or they have physical/health conditions that make it much harder to attempt to build their own bed, so they have few options if they want to find comfort. Not saying I blame companies for charging what they can, they've got the right to charge what they can get, and they bear no responsibility for people's sleep quality in general, and clearly, there ARE options to explore if you can't or don't want to pay the prices these beds usually sell for. Just a bummer for those of us who struggle so much to do what we can to reduce our pain, that the price of just getting the product that would be sooo helpful is unattainable for some of us, or just excessive even if one can afford it... Several grand for just the base of a bed is steep price! I really like this overall concept and design, though... I have a convective tissue disorder called EDS, which causes my joints to frequently dislocate and sublux, and it would seem like, of all activities, sleeping in a bed would be safe, but unfortunately, when I'm relaxed/sleeping it makes my joints even more lax, so I often end up dislocating, mainly my shoulders, while asleep, which... Really really really hurts, to put it lightly, haha. Luckily I've now got a foam core mattress (the cheap spring coil type pushes against you, vs allowing your body to sink in, which isn't necessarily bad, plenty of people prefer it, but due to my condition, it essentially was pushing against my joints and causing me further pain and damage), and overall I've finally trained myself to sleep on my back and not move while sleeping (and I've got a rigid neck brace I have to wear almost 24/7 cause the joints in my neck are now also unstable which causes all sorts of fun neurological issues haha.... But it finally got me to consistently stop rolling or moving around in my sleep, so that's a benefit) but yeah... Different pains in different moments, and ending up having to spend the majority of the day sometimes doing bed rest etc make me strongly value my bed, and I'd LOVE, SO SO SO MUCH, if I could figure out how to build something like this, perhaps with some sort of motor or easier method of adjusting without having to get up to do so, though I'm thinking something like this, with my current knowledge and budget, is likely my best bet, at least I'd be able to adjust it ;) I do want to learn more about what the inner mechanics of a typical electric adjustable bed are like, though... Seems like, depending on the complexity, might could just make it so I could stick a drill somewhere (in lieu of actually having a legit motor installed), and have the drill adjust it between positions... Even if I'd still have to get up to do it, it seems less manually demanding I'm also curious how those electric recliners and hospital beds work, might be able to understand a new approach that way... Just brainstorming, figured maybe others have similar thoughts! :)
You sir are a modern day Robin Hood. I love seeing videos like this where it encourages people to empower themselves. If someone is not afraid of being resourceful they can cut their home expenditure costs by ten times and use their savings towards more practical things.
Man Cass, U are BRILLIANT!!! U should REALLY draft up some drawings, SELL them on Craig's List, eBay, or Amazon (heck, y not ALL 3!?), maybe u could even Patent ur OWN Unique design & WHO KNOWS...maybe make *several BUCKS* off of 'em?!? As I said earlier - U are BRILLIANT...my poor husband has neck, shoulder & BACK pain SO bad, he cannot even sleep in our memory foam bed for longer than 2-3 hours - he then can only go out to our Family room and get some relief/sleep, in his "Big-Man Recliner"!! THIS SOUNDS like it could allow us to sleep in the SAME bed again..(which we MISS SO MUCH!!) 😢 Well Cass, BRAVO to U...& Thank U SO VERY much for sharing ur AWESOME IDEA with so many GRATEFUL people (like ME)! ❕😊👏🆒
Nice job! I'm going to be building one and putting motors on it. Question for you: Do you like those 4 dimensions you used: 25, 19, 12, and 22"? How would you change those dimensions if you had to do it again? thanks!
Karen Ross unfortunately I only drew the initial measurements, after that I sort of just went with it. So I don’t have any recorded instructions aside from the video. Thanks for the feedback! Cheers
One of the most important features of an adjustable bed is to be able to move it while you are in it, therefore, you need to buy an electric motor or two to implement into the design. I am building one right now with just a head lift for my mother.
For about the same cost you can get a three segment Pragma Wooden Slat Adjustable Bed Frame at Walmart (for those who don't want to build one). A latex on foam mattress should also work with these types of beds. Nice video and design.
I took back the walmart bed. The size wasn't right. And there wasn't any way to adjust for unlevel floors and the mechanism being in two parts made it hard to operate
I have a twin mattress, can you help me out. I would like to know how to make this for my bed ,,and what measurements of materials and hard ware I need .Do you have I instruction that I can use?
Too much wandering camera motion... Keep the camera still, a little more still anyway, and use gestures to set our, the audience, attention where you want... FYI HTH Good job!
He did a great job with the camera work. Where is your youtube page? Can we see what you’ve attempted to do? I’d love to see your professional camera work WHILE showing your fabulous wood workmanship, like this gentleman. GREAT job Cassiano! I appreciate a man that can work with his hands. I can also appreciate someone who can see something and build it.
I agree that a stationary one would be quite simpler. However I do move from level 1 and 2 every now and again. And it is also nice to be able to go flat when needed.
Unfortunately you can only use either a regular or memory foam mattress because spring mattresses do not mold very well to the frame. But it is soooo worth it!!
Hay man im 14 but i have a realy good idea for a bed to make ,i already have the dezine of the bedon how its going to look i need help with making it hit me up on twitter @FRYDAY if you want to talk more about it
+Cass Matheus Actually that is a very untrue statement. Most of the mattresses we sell have been adjustable friendly for the last 4 years. Also, not sure where you priced your adjustable bases, but 2 years ago a set of kings with head and foot adjustable would have been $1200, and be fully electric. Now we can do fully adjustable, with memory positions and massage for $1800. I get what you did, but for me, the features I enjoy is pushing a button to adjust to the level I want, watch tv or other. Then move it back with a push of a button to lower it to sleep position. A for ingenuity though :)
I am sorry Vicki, I sort of just went along based on the size of my bed. I looked at the design of the actual adjustable beds and where they have the three moving panels and made an estimated guess.
I realize you’re doing a lot designing the bed and making the video at the same time but the camera work is nauseating. For the future you might be better off putting the camera on a tripod and just doing a Time-lapse and talking over the video. Would be cool to see an updated video to see how it is now and if you added power/updated power.
Put the camera on a tripod please. Gives me a headache. My back hurts trying to watch. A couple of screw drives from some old trash compactors I think would make adjustment much easier. Way to think outside the box.

great video !!!!!!!! A artist with a idea and a solution....got to love that !!!!!!
Excellent work! Thanks for sharing.
Thank you!
SUPER CREATIVE! EXCELLENT!
Great video. Thanks for posting.
Great work ! i like diy stuf . ill try to build one of this , but ill use square steel tube coz were heavy . thnks for sharing keep it up .
Thank you so much, great job.
Nice work!!
I like what you have done here. I'm thinking of integrating a drill motor with a threaded bar stock to be able to adjust it with a switch.
Awesome man! I wanna see more projects from you.
Awesome idea have you updated at all since the original design
I'm inspired thanks man
Best DIY bed yet! 😁
If you could build one with power motors to go up and down you could sell them. You have a great engineering mind. Good job.

CREATIVE!!!!!! what is the size of your mattress? I need a motor or remote control.
I'm looking forward to constructing this. Can you please give me the measurement and the materials you used.
Some 1" all thread, a cheap motor, and an arduino, and you have yourself a motorized version. Great work! :D
Joe Mackie what motor will work with it ? Plz share link
@@bizguru5046 my vote is get a cheap hospital bed on craigslist and use the motor and control from it. cheap or even free if you look around!
@@robbiewilson157 : how much is a "cheap" hospital bed? Where to buy a motor / what kind if we can't find a used bed?

Great how to make it automatic with remote, where I can buy the motor n cylinder for it. Plz advise

So if you wanted to you could make a smaller version as a lounger for going alongside existing bed? Great idea! Thank you.

Anyway to get the plans 4 it would be great
Wouldn't that plywood prevent the matress to ventilate thus drastically increasing the occurence of acarus and moisture?
I do not need 'adjustable' I want the zero gravity formation I think your plan is GREAT
I know I can make a much simpler stationary one
I agree that a stationary one would be quite simpler. However I do move from level 1 and 2 every now and again. And it is also nice to be able to go flat when needed.
That's the easy part. You should have put in some actuators and remote controls.
Can you give me the planes to make this
Unfortunately you can only use either a regular or memory foam mattress because spring mattresses do not mold very well to the frame. But it is soooo worth it!!

Good work. If only your camera work was a good as your woodwork skills😅👍
Can I use my mattress or do I have to get a foam one?
If your mattress is rated for an adjustable bed you can. It seems like there are spring mattress nowadays which can be used in a adjustable bed.
Not the drool! Lmbo 😂
Use the incline motors from trashed treadmills, to motorize this.
Can u use any mattress?
It has to be a flexible mattress. Some of the new spring ones are actually designed for adjustable frames so they should work as well.
Do you have plans for building this?
I am sorry Vicki, I sort of just went along based on the size of my bed. I looked at the design of the actual adjustable beds and where they have the three moving panels and made an estimated guess.
