Did Discord Unverify MEE6? Was it a Bug?

- Recently Mee6 got unverified and people are wondering whether it was a bug or if Discord FINALLY did something. Well, while there isn't a clear cut answer. Using the details of the unverified and then verified fiasco with MEE6, we can come to a conclusion on what happened.
This might be the start of a new beginning for Discord and Discord bots :)

Oop just to clarify. Discord does unverify large bots manually (for example, music bots). However, the process as far as we know is manual. If there is any other information about this that I can publicly release, it will be attached to this pinned comment!
The main point that really shows this was intentional is the response time. Discord are speedsters when it comes to bots being messed up, taking 12 hours is way out of the norm.

No, Discord unverified the bot to have a talk because it seems like MEE6 didn't care about warnings and all of it. MEE6 act like they are in position of power over Discord, and they reminded them who own the platform, they might have unverified it, have a talk, meetings, to make sure MEE6 don't do stinky stuff, and then verify it again. And as you may see, Discord is doing everything in their power to step out of the bot era to the in-app era.

This is why Discord is taking ideas from mee6 and building it into Discord itself, so they can get rid of it.
And then look like they aren't as bad as the MEE6 owners.

Even better if Discord starts helping servers phase out of MEE6, and eventually force the bot to be removed from all servers.
Something to consider is that MEE6 wasn't the only bot unverified in the last few days. Arcane was mysteriously unverified too (Feb 26) and it took them about the same time period (as MEE6 took) for the bot to be re-verified. As much as we want it to be Discord cracking down on MEE6, it's probably something else.
I would just like to correct something. Statbot lost it's verification by accident though it happened while they were doing a lot of bot verification during the initial switch. It happening now is definitely something that seems very sus in comparison to when the whole system was new.
I want to note that very recently Discord updated their Terms of Service, and I assume it was in preparation for this

This seems like Discord is trying to intimidate MEE6 into compliance, which I'm all for. If there are ads in DMs again, this may be signalling that the unverification will be permanent next time.
As someone who went through verification (which ended in denial, and in classic discord way just told me it voilated ToS and had to rewrite the whole bot and create a new bot user) it's entirely manual, they ask for features and some code samples of major systems, and from my knowledge they have no manual or automatic reviews once they have been verified.
I actually managed to get my bot verified but yeah discords support is ass, took me like atleast 3 weeks to get the bot verified

to explain about scam bots being verified
is that discord probably doesn’t check that often if the bot they already verified changed to an unlegit bot
so how those scam bots got verified is they pretend to be a normal bot (that’s why there names are usually giveaway bot or welcome bot) and then when they get verified the owner of the bot just change the code to be a scam bot
This is actually something NTTS covered in a previous video, he was making a callback to it. He explained how verified + legit bots are stolen or grabbed, then changed into scam bots.

If they had skills to write a bot then they wouldn't scam in such simplistic way lol

You can apply to be verified once you are above 75 discord servers, which is the moment where the aspiring bot developer gets to send their passport to discord.

What if just one of the discord staff members just hates mee6 but the rest supports it, that could cause some one them to unverify it and some people to verify it in a little staff fight.

Have you ever considered making a video about Discord's own Clyde bot sometimes picking up brown Dachshunds photos as penises and preventing people from sending them directly (posting a link to the image works fine).
a while back i was trying to post a drawing of a deer.. yknow, with cloven hooves... it wasn't colored yet and apparently cloven hooves count as cartoon penises to discords automatic mature image filtering

Like they said in the video, deleting it would cause more problems than it solves. Massive raids upon millions of servers, ban waves, etc.. What the "bug" should be is removing verification so it actually stops replicating mee6's garbage bot onto new servers.

It seems like this is just a big warning shot across the bow. This would've really got the attention of the devs and probably they had to have a long conversation with Discord in private to get their bot reverified.

There is so many bugs with bots recently in Discord. First Tupper bot didn’t work properly because of a system change with how names work, now MEE6 getting unverified
If discord did this intentionally, why did discord after a few hours verify the bot again? Litally make no sense to me.
I think the question needs to be reframed. It's not a matter of "why did discord after a few hours verify the bot again?" It should be more "why did it take discord so many hours to verify the bot again?" It if was not intentional, discord would have re-verified much less time than 12 hours. I think discord wanted to un-verify mee6, but in that 12 hours, the mee6 people convinced discord to not do that and re-verify them.

either it was just a warning as Tezos replied, or maybe they found... an arrangement. Discord ain't pristine clean neither, and I bet if they could take just a bit of these 3M from nft scam they wouldn't hesitate lmao. Just a theory though.

It's likely a warning for them to follow the ToS. The bot devs will likely never admit they received such a warning, but never the less, it is a wake-up call saying that discord will shut down mee6's ability to expand onto other servers if they don't fix their sh#t.

I am willing to bet some staff member unverified the bot "by accident" and didn't consult the other colleagues so they had no idea what was going on
I wish this wasn't "fixed".... Having Mee6 unverified would've solved so many issues, including world hunger (That's a joke. But in all seriousness... Having the bot nverified or even removed would be something I would love Discord for.)
Also, as a bot dev myself I can say that it's hard getting funds. Right now I pay the costs for my bot out of my own pocket, which wouldn't be an issue if I had a job to stay afloat. But without one I have to rely on donations which are non-existant. People want all the features but once you put a donation wall in front of some are they yelling and search for a different bot, which really sucks.
i think the idea in that guys reddit post was that the bot would be self hosted or smth or open source to negate dev costs....

I am actually in the process of making a mee6 alternative, like the guy in the reddit post said but yeah I know I will have to end up putting something behind a paywall eventually or somehow get donations
I actually started coding my own bot back in .. 2016? 2017? Around that time. I started coding it when I saw Mee6 had added premium features. I remade that bot from scratch twice, but the version running atm has been running for just over 2 years straight. I was thinking about going public with the bot, but it's not ready for that yet, also it's only speaking german atm. Maybe I'll set up a Raspi, get the bot ready (and speaking english) and finally go public. No 'premium features' in this bot. Ever.

if community support the cost of hosting anyone would just make those features for free. actually there are free alternative bots for the premium commands. and also there are some bots with everything free. but some of them lacks customization features as mee6. it just like another product in the market and their competitor.

I've been trying to get my bot verified for a while now (it's an AI chatbot), and I actually had to create an entire new bot profile because Discord denied it for "inorganic growth". Why doesn't Discord just do the same thing with mee6? If they can shut down someone's bot because it was in 10 servers owned by the same person, why can't they do the same for something much worse?

The real solution is to make a bot free with all the premium features, but make it so the server admin has to run the bot themselves. If discord wanted to be really smart, they'd implement running java bot servers into discord so you just need the discord app open instead of Discord and a Java window.
