Fun fact: Rhaenyra and Laenor not having kids was an actual concern of royal council when Viserys I betrothed them (due to Laneor's reputation), the Grandmaester Mellos (the one who was using leeches to heal the king) dismissed this by saying:
"What of it? I'm not fond of fish but when it's served, I eat it"
So you may not have noticed because they did not mention it but over the timeskip the old Maester died, this is big because a lot of people speculate that there is a Maester conspiracy. With this conspiracy it was believed that the old Maester was responsible for slowly killing off Viserys. If you remember in the last episode the new Maester who took the old Maesters place was trying to suggest alternative methods of healing for Viserys but the old Maester kept insisting they stick with the leaches which really wasn't helping with Viserys condition. So it is believed that after the old Maester died and the new one took his place and started trying new methods of healing, it resulted it Viserys surviving for a longer period of time.

The speculation or theory was that Otto Hightower and that old grandmaester was trying to slowly kill the king, but that that theory is full of holes because it was the same grandmaester who was suggesting to the king that he should marry Laena Velaryon. That's well against Otto's interest. It also didn't make sense that Otto would want the king to be dead, especially in a time period that he can't predict, because its in his best interest to have the king change his mind about the succession before he dies.
I thought that the grand maester being resistant to new treatment methods reflected how even 200 years ago the maester society was extremely closed-minded and stubbornly arrogant, just like how Sam Tarly found them to be when he went to work at Oldtown's Citadel.
I like it, I do... And the maesters almost arguing about what method to use does make sense.
But personally, given the story and the part they all play, it is very logical, and is plenty relevant to the story, that the king is just dying slow from infection and amputation

@Supriya Mukherjee I know. I am sympathetic to her more than I am to Rhaenyra. But I wouldn't say Alicent's side isn't as bad. I would say Rhaenyra's side isn't as good as it looks. Both sides commit horrible acts.
Dragonstone is where the Targaryen heirs live, that's where she's supposed to live it's just that Rhaenyra doesn't want to leave her father alone, she knows that the moment she leaves alicent will turn the entire court against her
Which is why it's really dumb for her to leave King's Landing. I get that the talks about her bastards will get worse if she stays, but leaving the court all to her rival was a very bad move.

There are deleted scenes of Daemon comforting his two girls and hugging them. I hate that they cut that scene. There are pictures floating around social media.
As for Rhaenyra being mean to Laenor, they were supposed to do their duty, have an heir as agreed on the beach, but you see that’s not what happened. So either he didn’t sleep with her or he is and he’s shooting blanks. And why is it all on Rhaenyra like she is all alone in making babies with Laenor. From the comments in the hall leaving showing the baby to Alicent, it seems Laenor hasn’t been doing his duty for the last ten years. He has to play his part too. No one is putting any blame on Laenor, why is it all in Rhaenyra? So Rhaenyra was supposed to wait around for ten years either not having sex or trying to have sex with Laenor?
Its hard to know where to place blame with Laenor because we have no idea what efforts have been made. Regardless, it was still Rhaenyra's own choice to have three kids with Harwin which was just a terrible idea.
I mean you are making that assumption about Laenor and Rhae and going with it as if it is a fact... Another possible reason is that Rhaenyra was not interested in sleeping with Laenor either and was far too busy and content sleeping around with Harwing... Which given their preexisting kindof flirty relationship and the age of her eldest son, which suggest that they started sleeping together pretty much right away, so this appears to be a reasoning that holds more weight to it; together with the fact that when Laenor told Rhaenyra that he played his part faithfully Rhaenyra didn't say anything on the contrary, which tells us that she isn't blaming him or holds him responsible for any "failures" in their relationship; the only thing that she criticized him for was his idea to leave Kingslanding... People are criticizing Rhaenyra harshly because this is the scenario that appears to be more likely, that she was careless and rebellious with her actions, as she has always been... Because even if you buy into the idea that Laenor flat out refused to sleep with Rhaenyra and pop out an heir, that still doesn't justify Rhaenyra's recklessness about letting herself get pregnant by a side peace and then letting it happen 3 WHOLE TIMES!... Like Alicent said, once would've been a "mistake" and a slip up from Rhaenyra; 3 times is clearly Rhaenyra being reckless with that "I can do whatever I want" attitude; because ain't no way any of those kids pass as legit, she would've seen that after the first one, been pretty sure after the second one and still had a third one and she clearly doesn't think she did anything wrong... All of it points out to her rebellious attitude still being at full force and still getting the better of her; making this difficult for herself and shooting herself in the foot.
They deleted those scenes because they realized that its out of character for Daemon, who just killed his wife in cold blood an episode ago and is now ignoring his dragon-less daughter. So now it can even be argued that he was only sad about Laena's death because he lost a dragon rider on his side, one that can control Vhagar at that.
Daemon doesn’t seem like a super affectionate father. The younger girl said he ignores her. They probably cut that scene because it didn’t fit his character.
@@KCohere33 From what I've heard Daemon in the Books actually is a good father to his kids despite his roughness and did mourn Laena, so if the cut scene is considered unfit then its due to how there presenting Daemon in the show. Also a reminder Daemon killing his wife is a show change as there was no indication Daemon was responsible in the Books.
Rhenerya isn't giving up her position dragonstone is the place the hier to the throne is supposed to be till the king dies and then they ascend the throne rhenerya was supposed to be there since she got married the only reason she didn't was to prevent allicaent from manipulating visarys as laenor explained , she's leaving because things have gotten to bad for her so she's going to regroup and prepare from potential war for the throne.
Dragonstone is the seat of the crowned heir to the throne. Rhaenyra going there is claiming her rights. It most certainly isn’t her giving it up.
I have seen GOT, but I have never read the books. I also never read the books for this series. So I could be wrong, but Alicent seems like she wants to believe that she is honorable and stands for decency, rules, laws, and traditions. But she just ends up looking like a hypocrite. There is no honor keeping Ser Criston as her personal Kings guard after he defiled the princess and killed someone in a jealous rage. Where was her concern for decency when she caught Aegon masturbating out the window? She walked in like she seen him do this plenty of times, and she doesnt even bring it up. Now she knows she is directly involved in the killing of the Hand of the king and his son, but I bet she wont confess to that.
Alicent's really out here setting her son up for failure and all because of Otto's teachings. I know you were saying that Alicent wasn't wrong. However, Rhaenyra has done nothing in the series to make me think she would take out her little brothers to consolidate power.
What's actually going to make Aegon a target is Alicent making Aegon fear Rhaenyra and believe that he should be rightful king.
All of Alicent’s loose talk would lead to nothing but the murder of Aemma Arryn’s grandkids, She is an evil bitch, and all the greens must be destroyed.

And because Alicent is paranoid it also makes Rhaenyra uneasy towards her and she might have felt that alicent is going to do something making Rhaenyra guard against alicent at all times.
And if Alicent is really just concerned about her childrens life and safety and doesnt want power and position , why didnt she just accept Rhaenyra's offer for her daughter to be married to Rhaenyraa's son, so that their families will rule the kingdom and have a stronger united house. She's a hypocrite and wants power just like her father.
To add to this, Alicent keeps telling Aegon that Rhaenyra will have to kill him to secure her claim. If that is true, she is low key telling Aegon that he has to kill his sister and his nephews in order to secure his claim.
All the kids are only half Targaryen, technically.
The lives of her children are at great risk. She needed her husband to stay to help protect them. That’s why she ultimately ordered him to stay.
The issue is she didn't fulfill the true deed which would be to have one heir of royal descent aka velaryon in this case. she knew the risk of having seggz with others could lead to pregnancy and bastards etc or that the chances of white/blonde hair babies decreased. understanding that role she didn't exactly fulfill you see the flaws in both sides.

And she may have expected to get at least one Valyrian haired kid, seeing as all her siblings are silver haired and Alicent isn’t.
Reminder that the kids may be similar in age but the blonde ones (by Alicent) are the brunette (by Rhaenyera) kids' uncles and aunt, because the three blonde kids (boy, girl, boy) are Viserys' kids and therefore Rhaenyera's half siblings.

I have to disagree Rhaenyra wasn’t being cruel or even mean to Laenor. They made a deal when they were on the beach and he’s been slacking on his side of it. He knows those kids are not his but he has taken them as his own they call him dad and they have his name. The same way that he uses their marriage as a shield to protect his reputation and do whatever he wants to do she needs him to shield her and their agreement. But I do think she could have picked a lover with at least blonde hair 😂😂 Hope you guys stay safe!
Yeah Laenor needs to puff out his chest and loudly denounce any talk of his kids being illegitimate. That said, I get his frustration with the situation.
Laenor did not fullfill his end of the bargin. He was supposed to give her children.

Rhaenyra's oldest son suggests they were sleeping together pretty soon after she hooked up with Laenor, so given that she had 3 kids back to back, it would be impossible for him to do the deed even if he tried. 3 kids is making it obvious to everyone around you that you don't care. Her being queen heir makes her position far more problematic than his. People are LOOKING for excuses to not worship her as eventual queen, and she's out here doing this, instead of playing it safe.

Vicerys asked if the baby would survive. Daemon asked if his wife would survive. Book readers have said that Daemon was a very good Dad but they seem to be down playing that in the show.
I've read the the books twice but I don't remember any mention there of Daemon being a good father. There was also no need for Viserys to ask if the wife would survive because the Maester made it clear from the very beginning that his choice was between letting both wife and child die, or trying out the method that could make the child survive at least. Watch the episode again.

@@havok6280 can you post an excerpt from the books here where it was said that Daemon was a very good dad? He married Rhaenyra not even half a year after Laena's passing. Do you think his kids with Laena were happy about that? Many in the realm felt that that was an insult to Laena's memory. I remember that the books described Daemon was happy to finally get a son that he has always wanted when his first son with Rhaenyra was born. But after that I don't really remember any detail from the book that mentions him being a good father. In fact, he even cheated on Rhaenyra with a lowborn or bastard girl that can ride a dragon. That doesn't sound like a good father to me?

As fucked up as it is, Larys killing his brother and father is pretty smart from a scheming perspective. Not only did he get the queen wrapped up in his scheme, so that she can't snitch and also "owes" him one, but he also removed everyone else ahead of him who's an heir to house Strong. I'm assuming he'll inherit Harrenhal after this.
I feel like he was in a better position with his father as hand and brother to Rhaenyra kids. His brother probably could have talked Rhaenyra into being her hand or even given lordship to Harrenhal due to his children being Rhaenyra’s future heirs. Him being a great schemer probably could have protected their position …idk just my opinion
Definitely a route he could have taken. I don't think his dad gave him many opportunities though, at least not the ones he wanted. He mentioned that "when one is never invited to speak, they instead learn to listen" or something similar to that. Harwin is also really the antithesis of political. I don't think he'd be doing Larys any favors like that while their father was around at least. He might have gotten Harrenhal in the end though, that's true. This move has an immediate impacts though. No need to wait decades for his father to die to maybe get what he wants. I imagine the end goal is something like the master of whispers similar to Varys (or maybe hand in the future) with how he's been acting. I really don't see him getting there any time soon supporting his family.

Fun fact: There's a picture floating around of a deleted scene where Daemon comforts his daughters after Laena's death. Fans are kinda mad because that scene would have depicted Daemon's softer side, him being a good father to his girls. They deleted it for some reason and we got what we got.
It wouldn't make sense since they are trying to portray Daemon as struggling to be a good father to both his daughter.
Ikr, they made him kill his previous wife which didn't happen in the books because "oh look he is so bad and unhinged" but removed the parts that showed him being a good father to his kids, like seriously??
I live for your Pre-Discussions, especially when you give credit to the actors. I also love Paddy Considine's (King Viserys' actor) potrayal of his character. And of course Matt Smith's Daemon is just *chef's kiss*. No wonder Daemon is George RR Martin's favorite Targaryen.

Exactly! Alicent paranoia(which I understand), fathers words, and stressed out view of Rhae Rhae will not allow her to see that Rhaenyra actually doing that isn't a done deal. Especially if they joined their children. A united Targaryen Household backed by Houses Valeryon, Strong, Hightower and all the allies already there, not to mention Dragons and strongest Navy... the matter would be moot, bastards or not. No one would be dumb enough to say anything about it, the kids would be legitimized, half Targaryen would be enough.

I mean, fighting with Harwing and winning that fight was not his goal... his goal was to set Harwing off and make him pretty much confirm the rumors... Hate to break it too you but Cole would've made quick work of Harwing on a real fight; Cole is probably the best swordsman and more skilled fighter in the realm at this point in time

@@MrFredstt Cole was purposely baiting Harwin. Earlier in that scene, Cole was also looking at the King making sure that he's there. The showrunners also confirmed it in their interview about this episode that yeah Cole's goal wasn't to fight Harwin, only to provoke him into basically confirming the suspicions of many.

Targaryen children are usually given dragon eggs in their cradles, but there's a fairly high death rate for the eggs. When the eggs don't hatch (they turn cold if the embryos die inside), either the kids get a new egg, or they wait until they're older and claim a mature dragon rather than try again with an egg. Daemon's Caraxes was a mature dragon who he claimed after Caraxes' last rider, Daemon's uncle Aemon, died. Rhaenyra was the youngest Targaryen known to have ridden a dragon, claiming and riding her dragon, Syrax, when the princess was seven years old. Dreamfyre, who was claimed by Alicent's daughter Helaena (when Helaena is around 12 years of age) was born over a century before and might be the mother of Drogon, Rhaegal and Viserion (Daenerys' dragons).

Rhaenyra’s going to Dragonstone, same as Daemon did, and she’s gathering her allies and “swords” there. She’s preparing for war.
Rhaenyra was heavily influenced by DT, He told her that once married that she could do whatever she wanted. The thing is though that was in reference to if she married HIM. As DT woulda been clappin those cheeks, Leuna (I believe that's it) hints that she's not the ideal wife that DT wanted because he wanted Rheanyra.
I think he ment in general the issue is daemon isn't considering the difference between him and rhenerya he's a dude and a prince so of course he can basically do whatever he wants , rhenerya on the other hand is a woman and s princess she doesn't have the same freedoms as he does and her actions come with big concaquences he doesn't have to deal with by virtue of being a man , basically he gave her bad advice that she unfortunately took to heart .

Rhaenyra's kids and Joffrey Baratheon's situation are completely different. Robert Baratheon was the king and Joffrey didn't have any Baratheon blood but Rhaenyra's kids are half Targaryens just like Allicent's kids, it's just unfortunate they didn't get the white hair
It's not completely different. In Westeros, a bastard is a bastard. Jon couldn't inherit Winterfell before Robb even though they both had Stark blood. It's the reason Ramsey killed is baby brother. As Sansa said, a true born will always have the stronger claim.

Again, blood is important, but not as important as being legitimate. If Rhaenrya had a child with her husband, that child would have a much stronger claim than Jace, Luke, or Joffrey.
Ramsey was legitamized and he still saw his baby brother as a threat.

I was just pointing out that the reactors in this channel said that Jace's case is like Joffrey's but the two are not exactly the same because Jace has Targaryen blood but Joffrey didn't have Baratheon blood. But I agree that doesn't make Jace's claim legit. Also Laenor has given those kids his name and accepted them as his children so that makes them legitimate in the eyes of law.

Notice how Daemon ask if the mother will survive vs Viserys asking if the boy will live? At the same time, Daemon was not able to make a decision while Viserys made a hard one.
Uhm.. of course Viserys will ask if the boy will live because the maester already made it clear to him that his wife will not live from the very beginning. It was made clear that Viserys' choice was between his wife and child both dying, or trying the method where the wife will die but the child might live.

rhaenyra's not even wrong when she's said laenor has barely done his duties. her agreement with them was that they do their duties and once it's done they play with whoever they please, but he didn't do his duty, she had to get pregnant from another man, while he's been going god knows where living his life...and now when rumors are stirring and her children are in trouble, he wants to run off into war at the stepstones, right after his wife just gave birth and is vulnerable. he's immature and doesn't know his priorities, he's a good dad considering he considers her children as his own, but if that were truly the case he should protect them...the real war is inside the castle...which is why rhaenyra being the good mum prioritizes her children's safety, makes pleads to alicent and when refused, dips to dragonstone. not to mention part of the reason why rhaenyra slept with ser harwin and is getting scrutanized for it is bc she's keeping ser laenor's secret...she's also being very kind bc she ultimately listens to laenor and dips kings landing and lets him bring his lover...also rhaenyra is very forward i'll admit at the small council but part of why she sits like that is bc her body is weak and she is still recovering from labour.
In the book it says that Rhaenyra left her husband Laenor with his lover and went into the arms of Ser Harwin Strong.
Rhaenyra wasn't being cruel to be cruel. Laenor has accepted those children as his own and he's not stepping up. She has allowed him to do as he pleases. She doesn't judge him, but when their kids are being threatened and she's walking the halls bleeding to show her child to the Queen who is taunting them, yeah. He needs to step up.

As far as why Alicent's children have silvergold hair and Rhaenyra's don't... honestly it is mostly just bad luck, and maybe Harwin having strong genes, like Robert Baratheon. Father vs mother doesn't matter.
In the books, Rhaenys has black hair because of her Baratheon mother.
Further along in history there are actually a fair few Targaryens without silvergold hair, mainly due to Targaryen men marrying non-Targaryen women.
One of the greatest and most legendary Targaryens of all time was Baelor Breakspear - pitch black hair. He would have been King, but his honor got him killed too young. All of Westeros wept at his passing.

Pay close attention to what Helena says and it's very important, I wish they had shown us more about Harwin and Laena that watching the series for the agent feels more pain when the characters die, so when I see the two characters die I was sad for the death of the two but not to the point of crying for them two characters, you know, I think the writers didn't want to show too much of the two characters for a simple reason and because they probably don't think it's important to the story

You forget that one of his parents had white hair. Even if we go very technical on DNA stuff, it doesn't really matter because its plain for the realm to see that those boys are not Laenor's. The books even go into more detail like how their noses are very different from Rhaenyra and Laenor, skin color, as well as built. They all looked like Ser Harwin. Of course it matters, because as King Viserys said, the truth doesn't matter. Only perception.

Also, as to why all the kids don’t have a dragon…Rhaenyra’s dragon is the only one that’s had a recent clutch of eggs (she offers one in the deal she tries to broker with Alicent at the small council meeting) so she is able to give them out or not give them out. So that’s one way someone can get a dragon. Or you can try and bond with a dragon that no longer has a rider. Aegon II and Leana got their dragons that way.
There is a deleted scene of Daemon comforting their kids and I truly kinda dislike them for cutting it out.

I think you guys were the only reactors that were on the side of Alicent lol. I was with her at first but she looked pretty villainous in this episode. Now probably Otto is gonna be the new Hand of the King. So she is gonna be with Otto, Cole and Larys, three big villains pissing in her ear. And she is already obsessed with her children. That's the Birth of another Cersei, I think. Bad influences for Aegon as well. He's gonna be Joffrey with the skills of Jaime. Scary combo.
There's really no "villains" vs "good people" here tbh if you really look into each character's motivations. Alicent truly believes that her boys could be put to the sword, especially now that Rhaenyra's ascension to the throne will be a lot more challenged because she mothered bastards. That means in Alicent's mind, Rhaenyra will have to act more harshly in order to make sure she will ascend the Iron Throne. She doesn't need Otto, Cole, or Larys to tell her that. Any thinking woman or man at those times would have thought that.

Viserys is not a bad person, therefore not a bad King, but he is weak. He gets manipulated easily and never prioritizes taking care of arising issues in the Kingdom and in his family. That is why Daemon wanted to be his hand, to help him rule and to protect him from the likes of Otto. The only thing he was firm about was making Rhaenyra heir. I think he did it because he truly loved his first wife, Rhaenyra is his favorite child, he understands that losing the claim would put her life in danger, and he had passed the prophecy to her already, which kind of seal the deal. Unfortunately, he wasn’t firm enough with his wife and he allowed her to poison their children against Rhaenyra.

Targaryens don't just get dragons they're presented with dragons and it has to bond with them what's happening is that kid hasn't being able to bond with any of the dragons they've showed him
Targaryens get dragon eggs put in their cradle so that they grow up and bond with the hatchlings. Aemonds egg probably didn’t hatch. Sometimes the eggs hatch and the hatchlings die young, like with the book version of Rhaena.

No no, Rhaenyra was right. Her and Sir Laenor's deal was that they would perform their marital duties (aka bear children) and then seek pleasure elsewhere. She didn't bear Laenor's kids either bc he couldn't perform or bc he is infertile, so the least he can do is present a strong front in claiming her kids as his in order to protect them. She kept her side of the deal, he kinda didn't, so now she was rightfully asking him to step up, and only ordered him to do so when he refused, making excuses. I love Laenor, but he wasn't in the right here.
