That's ok as long as you don't confuse people and they're able to understand you properly. The difference between the British and the American accent is not just about the pronunciation (or the orthography), it's also the vocabulary. If in a given context or conversation you mix the two accents/vocabularies all the time, you may confuse the people who listen to you, as the same word may mean one thing for a British person and another for an American person. Also, you should be careful about cultural differences as again if you mix the American accent/vocabulary in a Britsh context or the other way around you may sound rude, or silly, or just fake. Generally, you should try to stick to just one accent in a given context or conversation unless the people who you are with are well aware you're unable to.
I have the same but Australian instead of American (although I still have a bit of American and Canadian). I wouldn't call mine an accent though more a mess of pronunciation that comes out of my mouth everytime I speak.
@@yoututubus I've grown up with a pretty similar thing with my accent (Australian and British with some slight north American accents) and most people don't have many problems. In my experience most people are generally used to those specific (British and American) accents and slang because they're both the most prominent English speaking countries. Even then I've met other people who have the same and most people will channel out one accent or the other anyway. Due to the fact that most people would probably understand the slang and that most of it most likely wouldn't get mixed up to much I'd say it'd be pretty ok. People will know they're American anyways, especially since you have to have a mostly foreign accent for people (from the country of the accent) to not realise where your from (I'm fairly British in slang and accent but if I went to England I'd sound extremely Australian). So I don't really think an American accent is too much to worry about anyway.
I agree with your point on #9 to relax. I think when it comes to the accent, it helps to (ironically), not think about it too hard. It depends, but the more concerned and conscious you are (either too much or too little), the more it will be reflected in your speech.

Good question! You're right - I think we can sound beautiful and amazing with our own unique accents. After all, you don't even need a British accent for the IE:TS exam. I've mentioned this in previous videos but I make accent tutorials for anyone who is interested in the British accent or culture for linguistic reasons or just for fun. Absolutely. You do not need to speak with a British accent to get the approval of others [in the UK] who do speak with a British accent. If they exclude you, then maybe you should have second thoughts about the British.
What I am saying is this: you shouldn't need to assimilate just for the approval of someone else. Integration is fine, but I have an issue with people trying to fit in too much. People matter, and for me it doesn't matter what your accent is.
I think I'm trying to learn it because I like how it sounds. I'm not aiming to sound as a Brit. I'm an ESL who learned to speak it with a Modern RP, same as other people choose the Standard American variant.
As a Londoner, I agree with your advice about avoiding stereotypical and repeated phrases, but not with everything you say about "fake" accents. Mixed accents which include both British and non-British features are commonplace everywhere in London, and won't attract any negative judgement from pleasant people. I would recommend every language learner to focus on speaking clearly and developing a good vocabulary, rather than worrying too much about their accent.
From my perspective , I think that accent is accent. There's no such thing as faking it. I don't understand. You just learn whatever accent you like , talk with whatever accent you like to.
I've a friend from India, who like your friend has a unique accent. She's a bit of grammar Nazi though, for apparently every language she speaks(as our mutual friends claim). Her accent is truly different from anything I've heard so far. I wonder is it a cultural thing?

By isc she means , india secondary certificate, why is equivalent to A levels. India has many boards depending on the state and then there are all india boards like the ISC. ISC used to be known as board of Anglo Indian education in British India. Hence we study Shakespeare, Conan Doyle , dickens along with books of various Indian authors. Which also means that our English is apparently a bit better than rest of the students in India, of course leaving a few exceptions. There is also a feeling of superiority in india if one speaks better English which is stupid, but that’s how it is. We have a colonial hangover but thanks to the current government which is giving stress to Indian languages , Indian history and culture, Indians are finally proud of themselves for who they are. I personally love my Indian accent and I haven’t even once had any problems in communicating in US, UK, Australia or even New Zealand. I do not agree that English is only the language of the English. Regional influences sound so cool and natural.
And yes the accents change as you go to different states of India just as it changes in any other countries. New York accent is totally different from a Texan just the way Newcastle accent is so different from RP.
Interesting! However, why can’t we embrace different accents (and therefore cultures) including foreign accents? if we try so hard to sound British, we would lose a part of our identity. You're so eloquent, you sound more than British. I mean you can teach English to some English :) Remember Not all British or English speak good English. There are many illiterate natives out there who don't speak good English. And this actually applies to people in all languages. My point is not speaking in a "perfect" (any) native accent doesn't degrade one's fluency and mastering of the language. As Anpu said, one should try to speak a proper English with a good accent, but no need to fake it. English people are in the habit of admiring and complementing non-native English speakers. "Oh you speak better than me.. your English even better than mine." etc, you hear it a lot.!
Britain has so many different accents as it is, I dont think foreigners have anything to worry about. Southerners struggle to understand is northerners most the time 😅
I'm learning the accent for almost a year, and I can tell that I'm improving as there is a massive difference of how I speak a year ago compared to how I speak recently. However, I quite mixed up the vocabularies of British and American since I don't live in London or England. As of today, I am comfortable at speaking with an Modern RP accent. You earned a subscriber, and I shall continue to watch your videos. Cheers, mate.
Im so trying all of these. Thank you so much. I'm learning the accent for acting purposes. See the movie Narnia came out the year after i was born, so I've grown up watching it and acting it out, so it would deeply please me to be a part of the new Narnia that Netflix is making. Honestly i've been practicing the accent all my life, but i really want to make sure its as authentic as it can be until i can afford a trip to England. So THANK YOU!! SO MUTCH!! only time now can truly express how much you've helped me on my journey to Narnia.
Thank you so much for your very helpful lessons. I am an professional Voice Actor in the U.S. and currently narrating an audiobook using British RP and Cockney for various characters in the story. I grew up with a standard british accent (RP) due to learning english from kindergarden but I can also switch to a VERY bad german english accent (a parody almost) I don't use any stereotypical phrases (unless I cosplay a character that does) Now I am kind of anxious cause I am in the exact same spot as the person you referred to. I have been told I fake it though I am just..speaking. usually I am told but other germans though. I have never received any backlash from any british people I have met.

Despite Brexit, the crazy royal family and various other British fiascos many Americans still find a posh British accent charming, classy and seductive. Therefore I think it might be worthwhile to learn an RP accent. I don't think anyone would know it's fake.
I'm learning the british accent because I've been living in this country for 10 years from the age of 9 and I still sound foreign. I've had enough of people asking me where I'm born especially since I came here young. I dont want to be judged and alienated for my accent
@Emile O'Neill not when it's completely unrelated to the conversation. I've also had ppl bully me because of my accent which has destroyed my confidence in the long run. A lot of people have been racist to me because of the way I sound including people of colour
@Emile O'Neill yess that's truee I'm glad the uk is diverse and how the majority are accepting but I'm personally insecure about my accent and would like to change it

And how can it be fake if english is your second language, you're just trying to speak/become a native speaker. If you were from lets say USA and speak with a British accent then yeah, you're faking it amd/or mimic it
Culture and reason are more informative advice for me, we use language as a communicating tool instead for showing off with a certain accent. The best accent for me is a(n) Indian with a(British accent. Yes, Shashi Tharoor.
I like ur video. Actually, I like U.K accent. Do u think regional accents r highly accepted? UK areUS English are standard English so far as I think. When we follow a dictionary the pronunciation of words r quite different from Indian pronunciation. My question is that, why shouldn't we learn correct pronunciation. We misspronounce a word by breaking its syllable without checking a dictionary. That's we can't understand Hollywood movies. In my opinion. We, whose mother tongue is not English, r afraid of standard English. Because it's troublesome to learn proper English. As English is not our language, we should follow them. Actually our accent is non standard. We like to translate through our mother tongue. No correct stress or pitch of a word. However, I enjoy ur video. Keep it up
There's probably still some controversy over that. If you are doing formal writing or formal speaking, it's probably safest to stick with "how not to", with "not" before "to", because that does still sound more formal and might convey the sense that you are better educated. But in informal, everyday speech with friends or colleagues, "how to not" might come across as more natural.
I think that the non native english speakers with limited vocabulary like me should not try to sound either us or uk accent untill they improve their vocabulary. Am i right? If yes, please warn your subscribers😍
Hi there, that's a good question. I think vocabulary and pronunciation are both really important aspects of communication. It is really important to sound clear so that the other person can understand you. So accent comes into this. But also vocabulary is important to get the correct message across.
To be very frank most of the britishers will understand any accent.. My friend is a Tech support and most of the words he speaks in English will have Indianism in it..He used to say tat most of the Britishers dont care abt accents and they will able to reconize if one is faking their accent.. It would be nice if you make a video on how to stop using Indianism..
I used to post in an online forum with people from all sorts of different countries, but everyone there posted in English. There was an Indian chap who said something about "lakhs", and I replied that I didn't think the others would understand what he meant by that. No matter how carefully I explained to him that the word "lakh" wasn't used outside India, he didn't seem to get it.

Southerners struggle to understand is northerners most the time 😅
The key is to feel confident about being your true authentic self. You shouldn't want to change your accent or try to fit in with anyone.
Hey, would you like to help me if you have the accent?
Im so trying all of these. Thank you so much. I'm learning the accent for acting purposes. See the movie Narnia came out the year after i was born, so I've grown up watching it and acting it out, so it would deeply please me to be a part of the new Narnia that Netflix is making. Honestly i've been practicing the accent all my life, but i really want to make sure its as authentic as it can be until i can afford a trip to England. So THANK YOU!! SO MUTCH!! only time now can truly express how much you've helped me on my journey to Narnia.
I didn't remember how I stumbled upon this video. But this is great!
your advice is nearly perfect mate 👍
That's sweet of you to say, thanks!
I'm a middle-class British person, and I don't think I _ever_ use the word "jolly"! The word is only really used as a joke, I think.
Can you do some tutorial on devoicing consonants such as Z and V since it's common in many Accents?
Thank you so much for your very helpful lessons. I am an professional Voice Actor in the U.S. and currently narrating an audiobook using British RP and Cockney for various characters in the story. Your on-camera teaching style is very professional and relaxed at the same time. I will be adding an Indian accent to my repertoire soon and look forward to viewing more of your videos in the future. I've learned a lot from you already. Keep up the good work!
Dear Janette,
This is such a wonderful comment and motivates me to make videos like this. So thanks for sharing your comment with us. Wonderful to also hear that you're adding the Indian accent to your repertoire soon. Good luck with everything.
Kind regards,
Anpu
Annamalai from Singapore-Tamilan, I'm quite interesting to learn British slang, I just subscribed your channel. I believed that your British accent will improve my confident, Good job keep it up! tks
Hello, I'm new here. I'm from Jakarta, Indonesia. Nice to meet you.
Nice to meet you!
I grew up with a standard british accent (RP) due to learning english from kindergarden but I can also switch to a VERY bad german english accent (a parody almost) I don't use any stereotypical phrases (unless I cosplay a character that does)
Now I am kind of anxious cause I am in the exact same spot as the person you referred to. I have been told I fake it though I am just..speaking. usually I am told but other germans though. I have never received any backlash from any british people I have met.

this is the content 😻..we need from you💓
Hehehe 💕
I have a question Anpu. What happens if accents from different native speaking English countries such as UK, USA, Australia, New Zealand and Canada are jumbled together?
Nothing happens 😂
I have that
@@shubhanginisharma4475 😂😂 I'm sorry no offense but the way he said it as if it's a science experiment and mixing all accent might cause an explosion lmao😂
Yes I thought your Malaysian friend sounded very English. I was from the LSE. I speak proper English - try to enunciate words clearly - speak at a slower pace - but I dare not put on a British accent cos I don’t have a good ear. #love my Malaysian accent. # love the British accent.
How to give a mild touch of British accent while speaking like few special words or phrases or pronunciation or something like this? Please🌟✌
im gonna talk about your point #6 sometimes i think im showing off to my friends at the same time i think i really wanna have command in british......still i cant figure out the reason!! periodt!
His all videos crack me up. 😀😀😀😀Brilliant teacher
Other youtubers-ways to sound more British.
Anpu-how to not fake you accent being British..
Kinda catching..... Otherwise love your content ❤️
@Emile O'Neill yess that's truee I'm glad the uk is diverse and how the majority are accepting but I'm personally insecure about my accent and would like to change it
Awesome vid👌
Thanks a lot!!
hey ! I am an Indian and u might be aware that practising the native accent in India is criticized and called dramatic . but i am really fascinated by the brit accent and more that of RP . and GOT has reallly made me falll in loveee with brit accent . i am pretty good at imitating the brit accent but i am often afraid of using it in public bcz ppl make fun of it . please HELP? ~ Raima
@Priyanshu Raj thanks dude !!! :)
Is it okay to be a person with a mixed accent? Like I will generally switch the accents....is that the worst thing to do? Do people judge more?
I am doing that too lol. My English is mixed of British, American and sometimes other.
Actually it is wrong you cannot drink milk mixed with curd, butter and ghee. This is what the another person feels while you talk with mixed accents.
How we get our voice / Vocal into British accent like yours.? Any tongue mouth exercises can you give us
Best tip is to relax 😎
Well someone looks bomb with a bit of stubble👁️👁️
well, I love your videos, you are so CUTE! And anexcellent teacher, however, I must say that when you sign off (perhaps it is for effect) you say Cherio. That went out of style decades ago, People generally say cheers! Maybe you do know this but hearing cherio is a bit odd unless again it is for a 'signature' effect. Just so you are aware. Good work it is spot on!
Can you please make a video on how to improve listening skills I'm really too bad at understanding native English speakers especially when they are using too much slang and combining words😭😭😭
Yes i do experience the same thing, like i can understand, but not much
I would like to hear you doing formula 1 🏎 commentary
you nailed it g. 🔥
Splendid

The same happens with me , people say I'm faking ma accent.!
Oh really? It seems a lot of people have experienced this :(
Same, Really does hurt.
Wow. Excellent while watching video I read comment and expected your awwwah😂
Please do Indian accents it makes me laugh they are just so funny. Love your vlogs 😘😘😘😘😘😘
I will definitely continue to make Indian accent videos. They're not meant to be funny though - they're supposed to be educational. Will make more fun skits in the future though :)
And how can it be fake if english is your second language, you're just trying to speak/become a native speaker.
If you were from lets say USA and speak with a British accent then yeah, you're faking it amd/or mimic it
love the kurta :)
0:45 This happens mostly in Tech Support Scam. 😂😂😂
The example is Jonathan Joestar in English Dub.
VUT! Mumbai Call Center accent sounds 100% Butish. My cousin Bappu votch BBC awery day. He is the wary good.
Culture and reason are more informative advice for me, we use language as a communicating tool instead for showing off with a certain accent. The best accent for me is a(n) Indian with a(British accent. Yes, Shashi Tharoor.
Is an Indian not a .
@@trollnehru8102 Thank you
language is a tool to communicate
True!
That’s grand bro!!!!
Thanks!
Keep it up
I fake my fake British accent
Shouldn't it be "how not to" with "not" before "to"?
Both are correct, they emphasise different meanings.
Thanks for your tips.
But can you tell us what exactly is a British accent? Is Birmingham, or Yorkshire, Or Geordie, or West Country a British accent?
all
I think that the non native english speakers with limited vocabulary like me should not try to sound either us or uk accent untill they improve their vocabulary. Am i right? If yes, please warn your subscribers😍
Hi there, that's a good question. I think vocabulary and pronunciation are both really important aspects of communication. It is really important to sound clear so that the other person can understand you. So accent comes into this. But also vocabulary is important to get the correct message across.
@@AnpuLondon Thanks for your reply, nanbaa.sending you love from kerala😅
How do you do that? You switch the accents in a flash. I wish I could do that.
I love ur videos! I bet youre going to reply with "awh" haha
Looool
😂
I love British accent
Anpu before 🇬🇧accent : bottle of waterrr
Anpu after

Anpu or Anbhu??
Is it a problem if our accent is posh!
Surely it’s what you say not what accent you use.

Nice kurta bro
Thanks! I enjoy wearing it :)
Im hardly trying to learn English first to become fluent
Bro i am also from tamil Nadu you need to clear my doubt in India the girl name wonder girl jhanvi speaking British accent is she realy speaking British accent are faking the Indian peoples
Her British accent would immediately be recognised by a British person as non-native. Her R’s are too strong and her intonations are in the wrong placements.
You look like an Indian but your accent is preety much like native speakers.
Anna majaa 🔥
What does Majaa mean? :)
