Written by songwriting couple Tony Hatch and Jackie Trent, this was Scott's biggest UK hit as a solo artist, making it all the way up to number 7 in 1968.
My husband was the spitting image of Scott Walker and he passed away 5 weeks ago. I have been playing his music a lot lately and this song brings tears to my eyes and makes me cry he had such an amazing voice and the lyrics incredible. Love you Scott xx
So sorry for the loss of your man and hope you laugh and smile again. It's hard loosing a partner, a lover and a best friend. The sun will shine again ❤
Stunningly beautiful, really tugs and the heartstrings, especially for us oldies who had the best singers, song writers, and fabulous orchestral backing - nowhere comes close today.
This is a great post mate, and it’s a fact that this song and the other songs Scott walker sang and wrote are all beautiful, and I love this song the more I listen to it, his favourite song to me is I will wait for you, and the line, “if it takes forever, I will wait for you, and that’s so poignant to me, I love this song and I love to sing it when I am doing karaoke along with the summer knows, and on days like these, too my songs are my heart and my soul and they are all the story of my love for a beautiful and wonderful, and so special to my heart and I sing them for her, it’s all I can do, I love her and our memories of the past and one day I’ll find her again and this time I will never let her go, we are not done, and we will someday be together again I love you Pauline I always have done and I always will do Stuey xx
This song stops me in my tracks every time I hear it. What a beautiful voice he had, this song brings a tear to my eyes still to this day. R.I.P. Scott Walker.
I just unexpectedly lost my beautiful young mumma, my Joanna. When my sister and I were little we were always envious over how many beautiful songs had her name in them, she would laugh her wonderful laugh. I’m so glad I have so many songs like this now
Such a beautiful thing to say about the person you are so still in love with, I wish one day she remembers me and changes her mind Stuey in England 🏴
Last summer I was working as a waitress at a coffee shop and there was an old British couple that would come over every day for their morning coffee until their vacations would end. Every time they would sing "Joanna" to me as soon as they saw me and I would smile. They really made my day!!
That's lovely ... and what a song! Been following Scott since 1981 when read about him in NME. He would have hated this in recent years before his passing but it's perfect and moves me very time.
In the mid 1960’s I was working for the Granada Theatre group as a trainee theatre technician . The Walker Brothers were starring top of the bill on my last live stage show with the company .The fans were surrounding the theatre waiting eagerly to get in to see them perform that evening . I was already a fan of this wonderful trio led by Scott with his unique and unforgettable voice . I never forgot the privilege of being able to work on stage along with them , helping prepare lighting and sound for a performance that , by the reaction of their adoring fan’s screams and applause , would have been something they too would never have forgotten .
In all our lives there is a singer/song that just belts you in the chops. Scott is my singer. When you look at the tv and watch this bloody handsome singer with a truly powerful voice, laying out what a proper pop song is and then making it top notch. ...? Marvellous. We ALL wanted to look like Scott. The voice was a great bonus...
@carolinewoodward1016 the answer is this, out of all you come up with, Scott Walker could sing everything. The others were crooners, and could only sing other peoples songs. All other opinions are a matter of ones taste
I had this song played at my daughter funeral 29 years ago this Saturday. She was only 2 and a half years old when she died. I find it so hard to listen to it without crying. And yes her name was Joanna
That voice, that face. At 17 my friends and I would gather around the tv watching him on Ready Steady Go or Top of the Pops and just melt. His voice still makes me melt. I've been playing my Walker Bros and Scott's solo work CDs for the past 2 days. Such a loss, thanks for your wonderful gift Scott. Enjoy the next life.
I challenge anyone to listen to this song and not to have a tear in your eye for long lost love or the passing of a loved one from years gone by....they simply don't make them like this anymore....RIP Scott Walker...
How very true..are we to believe that there are no more men with the voice he had?...more likely that the autotuned robots we get now with their fake crying and pseudo emotions are what the 'mini Gods' of x factor want
why are you looking for such talent in a tacky competition? there are plenty talented singers left, this is like asking for a steak at a fast food vendor
You know when you're at a party or some such and a random someone asks you what super power you'd choose? I always say: "Easy. To sing like Scott Walker"
My favourite song of all time sang by the most wonderful singer ever. His handsome boyish looks and deep velvety tones will be forever remembered by his many adoring fans young and not so young.
I heard Joanna this morning on the radio, and it made my day. The host payed a nice tribute to the late Scott Walker saying he had one of the best voices ever, and was such a nice and gentle guy. Couldn't agree more. ❤
Well somehow I just discovered the Walker Brothers soul this is June 1, 2022 and I am 67 years old back in the 60s and early 70s oh I listen to everything that they played on the Pop radio stations? They slipped through the cracks, but now I have found them and like Them A lot!!
Great voice, great songs. He had a better voice than Sinatra and everyone else, and should be much more widely praised and remembered. As for the BBC erasing his shows, they have a lot to answer for over the years.
Joanna, my daughter was 15 when a drunk driver took her life. As she lay dying they said she said "call my daddy". I can't see her picture without crying.
Scott missed his calling. These songs were where his true talent lay. They have another word for this.... perfection. There is such a disconnect here between the teenie bopper world he lived in and the more sophisticated world of adults. Beautiful interpretation of the lyrics and even more beautiful his voice. Really, I believe this was his very best effort.
This is how you sing a song , pure 'gold' ! what a fantastic voice , his breath control is awsome , you think he's going to take a breath. but rolls on to the next phrase ,his interpretation of the lyric is brilliant ! what a singer. Im sorry to say but so called singers of today can learn a lot from Scott . RIP X
I've always maintained Jim Morrison's my favourite male vocalist. But I can't help thinking this guy sounds similar, even if their music style was totally different.
The most beautiful baritone voice, with that not over the top vibrato. What a combination. Even liked his later avant-garde work, which were more soundscapes and for many a bridge too far. But the voice was unmistakable. RIP Scott Walker. @@rncbshef84
