    I think I got tears in my eyes at least 3 times this episode. Even though episode 3 was light on volleyball, it was full of emotion and feel-good moments for my heart. We get to see some of Yachi's backstory, and we see how HInata is able to be a great friend and source of inspiration.
    I loved this episode of Haikyuu! and if I am already feeling this way this early in the season, I'm not sure my emotions can handle the rest!!

    This is going to sound weird, but I've watched Haikyuu countless times, read the manga even more than that... and this STILL is one of my favourite moments, and it involves almost no Volleyball.
    It's an often forgotten fact that if Yachi gave up and didn't join Karasuno, the away games would probably never have happened as they wouldn't have been able to afford transport.
    By sticking to her guns and believing in herself, Yachi improved the lives of everyone around her as well as her own. It's inspirational honestly.

    Yes finally a reactor that realizes the mom was just using tough love. Thank you Sarah. I don’t get why all the other UA-camrs still don’t like the mom after they show her being proud of Yachi for being confident and helping her with the poster

    • @pickthestickup
      @pickthestickup 2 роки тому +104

      Agreed, Yachi's mom is a full-time ad exec AND a single mother, which is difficult anywhere, not just in Japan. She's had to really be strong to find the level of success she's had, and is just overcompensating a little hard in trying to build that strength in her daughter, but it comes from a place of love and concern for Yachi.

    • @ajollybee
      @ajollybee 2 роки тому +33

      well, to be fair, you can recognize the mom's tough love approach, be happy/touched she's helping yachi with the poster, and still not like her as a character. alternatively, you can be okay with the mom and also be critical of her parenting style. none of these are mutually exclusive, and they're totally valid!
      speaking for myself, i admire the mom as a career woman, but not as much as a mother lmao. i am a bit biased bc i have been in yachi's shoes myself and regardless of whether something's coming from a place of love, it doesn't undo the effects it has on a child. like, the assistant makes a comment that the tough love is probably why yachi is so negative, and it's unfortunate that her response is "if she's going to give up bc of what i said, then she'll just have more difficulties in the future." for me, that's what rubs me the wrong way. it's great that yachi is able to move past that with hinata's support, but she could very easily not have, and why i'm personally not a huge fan. anxiety isn't something that can always be brute forced.
      that said, i do appreciate the realism of yachi's home life and all the nuances contributing to the mom's parenting approach and how she expresses her love!

  • @SraHaku
    @SraHaku 2 роки тому +290

    a small but significant detail you probably missed is that when hinata came across the poster yachi made for the fundraising it was being displayed at the same store he saw the little giant play and fell in love with volleyball for the first time back to when he was in middle school (if you remember that scene the show opens up with. little hinata passing by on his bike and watching the little giant on TV). the poster yachi made also says “the return of the little giant” which might be cathartic to hinata, realizing how far he's come and that he can be others people inspiration too 🥺 this show man

    I've said it before but riding the high of watching this reaction I want to reiterate how excellent your videos are. This is one of my favourite episodes and I love Yachi and her story so much - so to see you completely understand and relate to every important beat was immensely satisfying. A lot of reactors I've seen also get very confused at the "Townsperson B" thing for some reason, but you just got it right away and because of that were able to appreciate all the conversations about it. I'm just so happy to see it, thank you Sarah.

      I myself also thought my parents were so harsh and unsupportive when they would always question my hobbies, my activities and my choice in academics back then. I really felt that I was not doing the right things and I am like a Townsperson B compared to others who are going to law school, medschool etc. But I persevered and followed my own track and when my parents saw that I was doing fine and now thriving in my career, I could only feel a sense of relief and genuine happiness from them.
      It's a tough kind of love, which I guess is more pervasive in asian families. So I kinda understand why some western reactors don't fully get this episode and would be critical about Yachi's mother.

    Shojo manga is like, "girls" manga and typically it's romance! And I worked hard in it to learn what I wanted. and it continued through college in other clubs too. I had a feeling Sarah would be getting teary eyed with this episode. Specially the scene with Yachi and her mom at the subway, it's one of the most wholesome scenes in Haikyuu.
    Also, about the scene with Hinata and Kageyama explaining their desire to win to Yachi, I don't think most people realize the importance of that scene because of how subtle and low-key it was. The author was basically telling us that Hinata and Kageyama both posses the mindset of elite level athletes. You can teach someone to be faster, you can teach them to be stronger, but it's much harder to teach someone to have an insatiable hunger for victory, if it can even be taught at all. That hunger for victory is, it's what separates elite level athletes from the rest. The fact that Sarah picked up on the importance of Hinata and Kageyama's conversation so quickly, because she herself is an elite level athlete and could relate, I just love it.

    One thing about Tanaka’s short hair, buzz cuts and shaved heads are perhaps stereotypically associated with monks and Buddhism. That explains why he’s often jokingly shown praying but also why the other characters call him baldy. Buzz cuts aren’t common in Japan and so even though he does have hair it’s short enough for other characters to tease him about it.

    yachi's mother may come off as a little harsh initially but that may be because she is either a single parent or her husband is ot with them a lot. And she has work to do, meaning Yachi is left alone for the most part, so she wantts her daughter to be able to be strong and independet when there is no one to help her make a decision.
    Her initial comment about "not giving your all in a crowd of passionate people" is extremely true, as well..Tsukki will also struggle with this as he isnt as passionate as others(atleast on the surface) and as such he sttruggles with fitting with his team. Yachi's mother was conncerned that Yachi would feel out of place and isolated in that crowd if she couldnt understannd their reasons and work hard to keep up with them.

    Idk if you remember one of my comments on a prior video, but if you do, you'll know why this episode is extra special to me and my favorite episode in the series. I used to photograph my high school's sports, and have kept up photography throughout the years, and the reaction that Hinata has when he sees the poster in the window is the exact kind of feeling I always try to give to the people I photograph. I want them to see themselves the way I see them when I watch them doing something they're good at and passionate about, and be like, "Whoa..."
    Hitoka Yachi, forever my favorite character in the series, because the show demonstrates that even the people who are not athletic, not part of the team, are socially anxious, and don't know anything about a given sport... they are still valuable, their contributions can still be meaningful, and they should be appreciated. I typically *don't* like feeling seen; I like just blending into the background most times, but Yachi in this show makes me feel seen in a good way.

    This is probably the fifth time I've seen this episode and the poster reveal makes me cry without fail, so I was looking forward to your reaction -- it didn't disappoint. 😂💕It's also really satisfying seeing you immediately get Yachi's "Townperson B" metaphor and her relationship with her mom too.

    Love this episode! It was so awesome to learn more about Yachi, I really loved her from the start as well XD.
    I have a couple of clarifying notes for you 😁
    Just in case you don't already know this, shoujo manga is aimed at girls and usually has these very sweet romances. So when Yachi is being pulled along by Hinata and says she feels like she's in one of those stories it always makes me smile XD.
    Also, it's totally fine for you to call her Yachi. As Yachi is her last name that's what most of the characters will call her. Her mom calls her Hitoka for obvious reasons XD, and Kiyoko calls her Hitoka because she is a younger girl and they are friends 😊.

    "Do you need a reason to not want to lose?"
    I think that's one of the deepest quotes I ever read.
    Not deep in the sense of I FOUND THE MEANING OF THE UNIFERSE, but it explains what life is
    DO YOU NEED excuses to want to do thing? Do you need excuses to want to enjoy? You don't need reasons to want to do something.
    Don't care about why you want but WHAT you want

    Hi Sarah, I found your reactions over the holiday break and ended up marathoning through all your recaps (and then immediately re-watching all of s2-s4 of Haikyuu, because how could I possibly stop there!). I’ve really loved your reactions, but more on that a little later.
    From watching your videos and the way you connected with the more quiet, emotional scenes, I really wanted to learn more about you and your career, so I listened to a bunch of podcasts that you’d done. And woah! Woaaahhh!! It was when your beach partner described you as “the best indoor and beach volleyball player in Canada” that it really hit me how lucky we are to have someone of your skills experiencing Haikyuu with us! Suddenly those videos when you casually mention training for the Olympics take on a new light now that I realise you were going for gold…… (a million Yachi-style apologies!! I’m so so sorry for how oblivious I’ve been!!)
    I’ve really enjoyed listening to your stories about your career. If you wanted to, I’d love to hear more about going through your national junior programme (this is what I think about now whenever I hear Hinata yell, “Japan!” at Ushijima - Sarah, too, also went through junior nationals!), what it was like playing for the senior national team at 16, the US college circuit, playing professionally overseas, and switching to beach to pursue your Olympic goals - whether in separate videos or as these moments end up resonating with you in Haikyuu, I’d really love to just hear more.
    I’ve loved how thoughtful and intuitive your reactions have been. You pick up on so many small details for a first-watch, it’s impressive! The Losers is one of my favourite episodes, and Haikyuu has to me always been a show that not only celebrates talent but shows how hard the “geniuses” work and their own doubts and barriers. It’s the emotional side of Haikyuu that makes it a really special show for me. I’m so happy to find that side resonates with you too!
    So sorry for the long rambling! I’ve subscribed and also started watching your other volleyball videos. Watching your beginners guide videos, this week I found myself thinking, hey maybe I could give volleyball a go too! - I’ve never been an athlete so I surprised myself here haha.
    Thank you for all the great videos! I’m excited to see what’s next!
    (Also shout out to your fabulous editor, Lydia - I see those animations she puts in and they are so much fun!!)

    So, I think that that one of Haikyuu's main themes is that you need other people to see how amazing you are (or can be) at something because it's really difficult to see that for yourself, and that this has been true from the very first episode (indeed the very first scene) - Hinata sees the Little Giant and that sets him off, Hinata's temporary teammates see how driven Hinata is, Kageyama of all people sees Hinata's potential, and the senpais see them all.
    And this episode really emphasises that this is not just something to know about volleyball but about life in general, which is why it's definitely one of my favourites. Hinata sees all the awesome in Yachi that she (and her mother) can't see, even in little things like making revision notes. In turn she can see how Hinata's hops are inspirational, which Hinata can't see on his own. Literally. Unless they put mirrors all round the gym, which would be weird, and a little distracting.
    That he then rolls up on his bike and sees himself in the same place as he once saw the Little Giant is just *chef's kiss*

    One more joke that's hard to catch: at 19:53 when Hinata says "I won't let Yachi-san 'kindness' go to waste", he uses the word "koi" for "kindness". A few words, or kanji signs, can be read as "koi" in Japanese, but it's mostly used for "falling in love" or a "crush" on someone, that's why Yachi becomes so flustered. Then she becomes relieved when Kageyama recites the definition. It's always so funny to me because it shows how oblivious they are. ^_^

    Hey Sarah, just a small thing… I understand that there are copyright issues but for your own personal sake, you should watch the opening at least once. There’s a new one every 12 episodes or so.

Seeing Yachi give it her all, Hinata being awestruck at the awesome poster YACHI made for them! Btw, when Yachi blushed extremely outside her home when because Hinata said “I won’t waste the effort she put in her teachings” or something like that, the word he uses is “Koi” that most commonly means “love”. That’s why when Kageyama explained the meaning she was… relieved?

    It isn't a strict rule, but in Haikyu, most characters are introduced in pairs. I really enjoy Sarah's guesses. I don't think she has watched enough shows to have developed 'anime instincts', but her volleyball knowledge puts her over the target so often, it is very impressive.

    Takeda-san offering to use his savings for the team is just… When I was a you get I was a pretty serious swimmer. And I swam for an athletic club with a pretty prestigious soccer history that was then going through a pretty rough patch, so while our team was doing pretty great, the club was spending most of their money on the soccer.
    My swim coach wasn’t getting paid every month. His paychecks were often late, getting later and later and at one point he was about four months behind. Dude was dipping into his savings just so he could keep coaching the team.

      Coach Ukai is also on the same boat tbh. He's not an official coach (technically, only Takeda is official hence why they need him to legally ask for timeouts during competitions) so he's not being paid by the school or anything (it's a typical thing for high schools in Japan to just get a faculty member to coach a sports club, unless your school is a powerhouse). That's why he felt like he had to help out in their family's farm during early mornings as seen in season 1, bcos he didn't want to be a burden to his family and just rely on them to earn money.

    It's hard for people who are very goal oriented and driven to understand the mindset of someone who's hesitant or listless in their wants or desires, and vice versa. I love this episode because it really shows that there's not much of a separation between interest and obsession, it really only takes that initial step to fall in love with something.

  • @Alphasnowbordergirl

    I get where Yachi's mom is coming from. Nothing is more rude than not putting in your all with passionate people. I helped to run a small club as the vice captain of a small club sports team and while I was dedicated, putting in time after school, making sure to have things set up and reserved only to have team members not show up for practice or bother even calling to tell me they weren't going to show up. At the time, I was very tight on money too, living dollar to dollar trying to put myself through grad school with no additional assistance, and spent a precious 25 dollars (I know its not a lot but that was a weeks worth a groceries for me) to buy a cake for the clubs first anniversary. Not a single person showed up to practice and though I was giving it my all, where even the captain was failing to do his duties, even though I cared to put in the work even though I hate going out, people seeing it so casually and not considering the people putting in the effort is infuriating.
