Developed by Graftgold and published by Hewson in 1986
Memorable for it's smooth scrolling and fast-paced action, the game was a technical tour de force at the time of release.

Ahhh that music....I close my eyes and am transported back to 1987 and a hot summer playing this game with my brother and cousins.....I made it to the 13th Level and no further..... the excitement of progressing just that little bit further....the pressure mounting as you ventured into the unknown on a "good run" .....most modern multi million dollar games don't get me as excited and my Adrenalin pumping as this baby did back in the day....a true work of art....Thank You Andrew Braybrook for your wonderful gift to the C64 World !!...oh and that music..............
"I knew Uridium was going
to be UK number one before
we even shipped it; such
was the reception in the
press. I'd stayed up all night
helping to pack cassettes,
but, the next evening, I sank
into the darkest feeling
of despair. It had been a
colossal effort, and I just
couldn't imagine how we
could ever repeat it. The
game was a total smash -
probably Hewson's biggest
ever hit - and had a big
influence on our thinking
for subsequent titles."

I played it until one day I broke it. And that day my C64s power pack was melting down, I had infinite lives and I was on my fourth playthrough of the ships and I couldn't play anymore. Oh great day to be alive aged 12 in the 80s.☺
Still looks amazing! A forever classic.
Outstanding! Breathtaking and super fast! A true piece of art!
OMG I never understood this game until now 🤣 - just 35 years later
Same here lol
I must have been a gifted child or something because there's a lot of games that I beat where people say "I never could figure out how to play that".
...Then again, I had absolutely no social life even as a kid so I guess the total lack of any time away from computer games probably didn't help.
I forgot how quick this game was. I loved it so much - music and gameplay.
A sudden desire overcame me to hear uridium title melody and watch longplay, and as always AI82 is my dealer of choice. Thanks :-)
Glad you enjoyed it ;)
After 38 years this game still seems fresh in the memory. The graphics boasted beautiful colour schemes... I found the colours very aesthetically pleasing. I could never forget the title tune, and the game itself was more enjoyable to play than other shoot em ups like Zaxxon and Dropzone. The 13th and 14th ships were very tough, but never unfair. If only the ship annihilation bonus was in multiples of 1,000 rather than 100, it would have been perfect.
The colour scheme on the ship Platinum is a delight to my eyes. And yes, if the formation annihilation bonus WAS in multiples of 1,000, it would motivate one to wipe out ALL the ships in a formation. This game was better than Sanxion and Dropzone, even Wizball. Thank you Mr Braybrook for your wonderful games !
This looks just awesome.
The player is crazy. To go back to the start, to draw out the tracing mines, and not to wait for landing sign... Crazy, I mean it.
"Uridium was our
biggest ever hit
when it launched
on Commodore 64,
so bringing it to the
Spectrum audience
was essential. Some
considered it to be an
impossible task, but
Dominic Robinson
didn't seem phased
and delivered a brilliant
conversion. However,
when he casually
informed me after we
had shipped that he
and John Cummings
had hidden an entirely
new set of levels in the
game, I was more than
a little perturbed -
if only they'd told me
earlier, we could have
made a big deal of it
in the marketing!"
-- Andrew Hewson, founder of Hewson Consultants
Its sequel on the Amiga deserves a longplay too
"I was keen to get the
arcade speed and look,
which required a bit of
simplification of the scrolling
routine, and a new way of
getting lots of movement
on the screen by using the
background characters for
bullets. I also wanted an
agile spaceship that could
loop and roll. We had bought
a sprite and character set
editor by this time, so I spent
a long time animating the
Manta spaceship. I used
to design graphics while
waiting for the code to
compile, about 30 minutes
a pop: I was using two
C64s at a time!"

Loved this as always thought i was flying the millennium falcon 😂😂 the gambling bit 😆
great stuff!
Music and sound design on Uridium and Paradroid don't get enough praise 🤔
The graphics are fantastic, all the details on the ships, and the lovely colour schemes. We tend to take the sound for granted, but again, wonderful sound effects. Gribblys day out was another great Braybrook game. That and Paradroid were so original and well thought out, almost 40 years later they still stand the test of time as great games... Uridium included.
For some bizzare reason this game came into mind and I thought I'd check it out on UA-cam. Remember playing it as a kid thinking it was awesome.
Andrew Braybrook was one of the best coders for the C64. Anybody know what he’s doing now?

Loved playing this game as a kid, and spindizzy was also addictive 😁
Gee I loved this game!! It was just so hard.. with the SF Trainer we made it to level 15
Relatively basic graphics but super smooth, blisteringly fast and superb sound effects. Oh yeah, and 100% playability.
The graphics are amazing - beautiful colours and shading on backdrops and sprites
Super-smooth scrolling and excellent tune! ..difficult game play.
came for the nostalgia, stayed for the mad skills..
Ah, the memories.
Great memories!
Complete bastard of a game. Beautiful though.
Superb game
TAS much?
Sprite collision turned off. Complete's Uridium with one life, lmao.
TAS yes, sprite collision is still on
I watched you go through mines 4 times.
@@kernzyp The ship is invulnerable during its flip over animation. Timed correctly mines miss you.
Which is made all the more tragic by the fact I came here to learn something from a better player after I've completed it without cheating.
Never got past Iron...
I never got past Copper 😢
looks like a great game. Personally, however, I prefer Dreadnaught Factor on the Atari 800 !
Never seen before...
