    I've stumbled across this video really late but it's great!
    *Spoiler comment coming*
    I really shipped Bryce and Connor and I know that's kinda ridiculous becuase it was so short but I did, and I wonder if that's why I really struggled to ship Bryce and Hunt. I enjoyed the slow burn tease between them but really didn't care If they got together or not.
    Edit: I should clarify I didn't read the synopsis so everything was a surprise so I was totally invested in Bryce/Connor not realising he was set to die

      I was the same! I actually think I fell more for Conner in the 100 pages he's in than I did for Hunt in the following 700pgs (as the romantic interest). I almost prefer Hunt and Bryce as friends who maybe hook up sometimes?

    Great review! Spoiler stuff in the rest of my comment:
    My biggest gripe was with the plot/ending. Mainly Micah doing the big villain speech at the end lol like I normally forgive a lot of things I normally don’t for Maas books but I could not over look that. Also I totally see where you are coming from with alphahole being repetitive and annoying I think for me it came up more when we were in Bryce’s perspective and she hated her birth father so much who did embody that idea. I still miss the wolf pack, I think I loved the first 60-80 pages with them so much and was sad once I realized I wouldn’t get to keep it. Also they got footage of her cause Declan was able to hack all the cameras in the city (or he might not have had to hack cause the Aux had access).

    • @BookswithBrittany
      @BookswithBrittany  4 роки тому +4

      I agree so much! I loved the pack at the beginning. It would have been so much better with them in it! My biggest issue was exactly what you said, the way Micah just explained everything was so anticlimactic. It could have been done in a much cooler way!

    I picked this up because you mentioned in a more recent video that you enjoyed Sarah J Maas and it won the Goodreads Choice Award for Fantasy this year... and honestly, you are absolutely right about her doing the same thing as so many other people (and quite frankly, doing it a lot better????). I am not a huge fan of hers--fairies aren't generally my thing--but I'm actually really enjoying this a lot more than I thought I would. I've been reading urban fantasy on and off for years, and this is basically that, but a lot more in depth. I'm really digging it and I'm really glad I gave it a shot. Here's hoping the next 600 pages are equally as engaging as the first 200 have been!

  • @narrativemagik6256

    Personally, I think the whole ‘alpha hole’ thing from Bryce will change as the series goes on. I think that (and Hunt says) she has a major chip on her shoulder about the whole ‘alpha hole’ thing, stemming from her father’s treatment of her mum. I think she sees alpha hole behaviour even when a man just cares, because of her perception. I wonder if Sarah J Maas mentions it so much to highlight how Hunt isn’t and is the right person for her? It will be interesting to see if Hunt will change her perception over time...

I am the opposite of you in that I love to read romance, however, I completely agree with you that Hunt noticing or commenting Bryce's underwear so often seemed gratuitous and sometimes to the point of cringe. I thought it was kind of a funny and clever way for the more modern characters to be referring to that "type" of guy in the Fae world that SJM created. I may be 6 months late but I love crescent city so I watched this video and read the comments. I dont know why a lot of people dont like hunt and Bryce together? Yeah she forgave him fast but if you think about it I think he just wanted to be free. Isnt that understandable? I mean he was a slave and he was forced to keep murdering people and not have a life. He literally said that he did it so that he can be free and have a life with Bryce. Idk I forgave him right away and yeah I was shocked but I respected why he did it. I respect people’s opinions I guess it just surprises me to see the hate. Also I dont understand the love for Adias? Then aidas reply " I think he will be proud of him" and jessiba says like don't be sentimental... Guys I think ... One of the asteri who hunt see during the summit in the screen is his father or maybe aidas will be his father....I want someone to discuss in the comment... Read the epilogue before for reference... I understand the similarities with Shadowhunters but I think it’s also very different. She includes a lot more popular supernatural creatures instead of just vampires, warlocks, and werewolves. I really can't stand her writing, it's so cringe worthy. I couldn't finish ToG and haven't picked up a book from her since. From a female perspective, I can see how it would be entertaining for you, but reading as a guy it's like the only message I take is that us guys are evil, egotistical, and/or incompetent, while strong women can't be rivaled and should rule the world. Sometimes her plot reads like Tru Blood fan fiction, its terrible. I can't stand it. But each to their own, if you like it then that's your niche. When it comes to female writers I prefer Trudi Canavan, N. K. Jemisin, R. F. Kuang, and Leigh Bardug. They're all far superior writers than SJM, she could learn a thing or two how to write a believable strong female character and better plot from those authors.

    • @unprofessionalcritic3107
      @unprofessionalcritic3107 4 роки тому +1

      @@JerodimusPrime As a female myself, I find nothing to enjoy in SJM's books and I've given them a fair shot. I read three books back to back in the ACOTAR series. But her overly exaggerated melodramatic writings style, bratty and self-absorbed characters that feel like right out of a reality TV show, poor world building, the extreme focus on who's banging who (who the heck cares? ) , all these made me hate her books to no end. The main characters are narcissistic and Feyre only care about her own pretty city of Velaris and destroyed another court just to get petty revenge on an ex for gods sake. And she faces no consequences for that. Because she's the author insert and can do no wrong, or even when she does she's be patted on the back. "Oh, you destroyed the land of so many people for self-care hun, it's okay. )
      She and her mate Rhys have sex in a sacred library where all the matrons are rape victims. How disgustingly selfish and unaware do you have to be to do that? (and the author seems to think it's so sexy).
      These characters also have sex while flying over the city that they rule together. While the people walks on under. How dumb and immature is that?
      Everything these characters talk about and care about makes them seem like spoiled horny teens and they're supposed to be 500 year old warriors.
      Her books are also too white, the petty relationship drama she focuses so much on makes me think her target demographic is privileged young white people. Because every single friend of the main characters are rich, white, gorgeous to the point of absurdity. Every. One. Of. Them. Has to be beautiful and powerful. Every time a new character is introduced you'll be bombarded with descriptions of what a supermodel they are. Again, who cares!?
      My main issue with her books is that they are superficial and has no substance. They aren't universal or relatable across the world. They're specifically for small audience. Which is fine when they keep it to themselves. But overselling them as books YOU NEED TO READ and labelling them the best without ANY constructive thinking is hypocritical on the part of reviewers and people who rate it 5 stars and think they're flawless (not directed at Brittany).
      Which is why the fact that this book won "best fantasy" category in goodreads is a joke. But most of her fans don't see any flaws in her books even when there are a lot. And I, like so many people like myself, got to learn after wasting my time on 3 books that they're not what they're advertised as.

    I loved ACOTAR when I read it years back but I immensely dislike this book. Thing is, I don't hate SJM but it almost seems like no one is allowed to criticise this book without people thinking you hate her. I found it very info dumpy. I remember Hunt was in the middle of thinking something regarding the investigation and suddenly there is a page long description of a temple that is not relevant what so ever. I'm on the opposite side where where I liked Danika but I despised Bryce and thought she was bratty and just mean to a lot of people who did not deserve it. She's established as the weakest link but continues to magically survive when others more powerful have not. Off course she has to be super at everything, so sexy, so sassy (cue eye roll). Hunt, on the other hand was bland AF for me and I much preferred Connor. I like romance but I didn't like their romance. The actual investigation was boring. I didn't understand why Bryce was not more co-operative in the murder investigation of her friend instead of trying to show up Hunt. The whole pretending to do nails but secretly investigating. Just work with people. The villain doing a confessional was lame. The book was far too long and could have been condensed and would have been better. Also a lot of characters in this book are pretty much copy and paste from other books e.g. Fury and Amren, Sandriel and Amarantha, Hunt and Rhys back story.
    I agree with you about the alpha hole.
    Sorry for the spam. Overall I was just really disappointed by this book. I kind of wish the series shifts and I see more from Ruhn and the queen witches angle.

    My opinion: Why this isn't my favorite.
    "Fuck" was overused, had to put it down for a while.
    When I picked it back up, truth be told, the 2 year gap didn't need to happen. Pleanty of scenes didn't need to happen. This should have been a 600 page book max. Hunt is a whiney side character following Bryce like a kicked puppy for most of the plot. There is hardly any diversity, and we all know that Ruhn should have been gay.
    Also, Bryce had zero qualifications for case.
    I have so so so many problems with this book. It's like SJM wanted the shock factor and world building of game of thrones. But it didn't work. MY OPINION.

    I totally understand everyone being annoyed with Sarah J Maas as far as giving these “broken protective bad boys” but I am so sad to see so much bashing against Hunt! I totally agree with all you said about Hunt! I feel like sarah really wrote a beautiful-and truthful love story! Everyone gives her shit for writing unrealistic guys but Hunt wasn’t perfect at all and this was the first time we have ever had a male character in her books directly betray the love interest? I feel like it was so real that sometimes your partner isn’t always going to be able to be selfless and because we know hunts reasons behind his ideology we understand the betrayal and therefore I feel like its easier to understand why Bryce forgives him because he tried to change and the fact that he could even recognize that what he did was wrong showed how much bryce changed him and I loved them together lolsss im obsessed

      So I finished this book and I’m not sure how I feel about it...definitely was very surprised bc I didn’t read the synopsis so I was upset early on! But I wasn’t a fan of the ridiculous slow-burn...it was almost to the point of being ridiculous! The ending seemed too “clean” even though it was devastating...I hope Ruhn gets his own book! I really loved him and his crew! I’m not in love with Bryce and Hunt...I did like how she showed a lot of the friendship part of their relationship! But the romance...meh...the twist was almost it for me. It seemed too out-of-nowhere and he knew the “answer” for a few days? Idk...I’ll still read the rest bc I still love SJM!

    I had to laugh because I'm not a romantic either and hate romance in my books but I did love how Sarah J. Maas did ACOTAR. I think it's my favorite series of hers so far. I loved Rhysand and Feyre's story line. But other than that, nah. I got Crescent City on Kindle but haven't read it yet. I love your take on it. I look forward to reading it! thanks! 😎👍

    Bryce was traumatized. She is half human half Fae so she was treated horribly her entire life. She is not living in our world. Bryce faced a type of racism her entire life. She has a right to think all the world is comprised of Alphaholes. but I don't think she saw every man that way. She just expected it in this city.
