Great idea! To be honest though, I would never let my live centers get into that condition. I'm very careful with how much pressure is being applied to the work piece, etc. However, if a live center does get scored up, I will keep this in mind! Thanks for sharing!
Your work is always perfect and inspiring. Your working space is always as clean as an operating theatre. Thank you for sharing your knowledge and expertise.
I've marvelled at your cleanliness (and skill) in another post but I think I have worked it out ..... This is the machinist equivalent origami 😉. Thank you for sharing.
It is so gratifying to see everything work out perfectly - and for the most part in stark contrast with one's own fumbling around the lathe.
I made two pipe centers for smaller lathes. #2 Morse Taper. Both had a Zerk fitting in the nose. Ran a socket with a universal in a collet engaged with the Zerk. Used that to drive the center. Cut the center cone in the lathe. One 60° included. The other 90° included. Used double row bearings.
I love your videos, they are so educational and at such high level. I have learned so much from your videos, thank you very much for sharing your knowledge.
Thank you for watching. The height of the whetstone should be adjusted accurately, but if it is even slightly lower, the whetstone will bite into the material, which is not good. So make it exactly the same height or slightly higher. The rotation of the center and the rotation of the grinding wheel are in the same direction, so the contact speed is faster. The die grinder can only be rotated clockwise, so the cordless drill driver is rotated counterclockwise.
I used to have OD grind rotary bushing. Set up the bushing on a tapered arbor. Use a hose clamp with an allen wrench welded to the adjustment screw. Tighten the hose clamp. Setup so that the Allen wrench is keep the arbor from turning. Drive the outside of the rotary bushing with the driver on the head of the grinder. This way the body of the rotary bushing is turning on its own bearings. We also used to ID grind the inside of spindles for multiple drill heads. On a center in the headstock. You figure out how.
Thank you for watching. Do you mean the angle between the grindstone and the grinding surface? The aluminum body of this die grinder and the whetstone are almost parallel, so I put the dial against the aluminum body of the die grinder and turned the handle to adjust so that the needle would not move.
9:30 nice video but 1) it doesn't matter to measure the tailstock, it is always in the centre, if it is not, it is because it is broken 2) you dont grind the tailstock, you lose the cemented layer and it continues to get damaged expecially with harder matarials, change it or after grinding it, send it for a heat treatment to regain the cemented part
I dont understand what the first part is for, I see you made the band to turn the Live center. But I am unsure why that was needed. Thank you for the video.
The tip of the center is on a bearing so it spins freely. You couldn't simply put it in the lathe and spin the lathe because the tip would stop spinning once pressure was applied to it or it would grind unevenly.
the end result looked amazing but i feel like you "over engineered" this, the pulley could've been made from the bolt that was cut and the rpm reduced in the drill if, unless it is not of a variable speed which would be weird nowadays. Do not mean to say that it is bad, it is impressive what you've made, im just saying that you could've skipped many steps to achieve the same exact result
the production process of the pulley wheel is unnecessary complicated, if you have the stock, then turn down the pulley in one operation and thats it. no need to turn down bolts and making a strangly bad excentric pulley . i am sorry, but i would concider this good craftsmanship.

Very good but take another stone and dress the wheel everytime you chuck it up. Improves finish and smooths out any vibration.

Very nice! Beautiful result. And thank you for the instruction on making the belt! I was wondering how difficult that would be!

I wonder if some of the grit from the abrasive finds it's way into the live center bearing.

Did you consider using an o-ring for the drill drive belt?
You should have dressed the wheel once it was mounted in the grinder, and you will get a better finish
Very nicely done. Nice restoration on that center.

Wouldn’t the oil on the tip of the tool instantly be removed by the friction and shavings and if so what’s the point?

Is centring the grinder's height very critical? And does the center rotates the same direction as the grinder but slower?
Thank you for watching.

That's the way to do it when you are a pro and take good care of your tools. :)
I love the grinding attachment you have. I have wanted to grind spindles for some time but i struggle getting the angles right. How do you do it?
Thank you for watching. Do you mean the angle between the grindstone and the grinding surface?
The aluminum body of this die grinder and the whetstone are almost parallel, so I put the dial against the aluminum body of the die grinder and turned the handle to adjust so that the needle would not move.
For not owning a grinder this is not bad. I do use grinders and would make work of this in minutes.
