I have this model. I agree. Bought it when it first came out. I'm a profession TV editor and cut on Avid Media Composer. I usually work in production houses, and only edited here and there with it. Small stuff. However, with the pandemic, all the facilities are closed and I am working remotely at home. Currently cutting a reality show, and so far so good. It's humming right along. I also do some Adobe After Effects with it. But you definitely have to boost the RAM! I put in 32. Thanks for the video.
Running a late 2013 27" myself, though I use an external Samsung T5 as boot and scratch drive until such time as I can get round to fitting a NVME internal drive. Makes quite a difference compared to the internal mechanical drive.
I bet it does. That’s a smart way to go about it, I might have to try that myself. I’ve wanted to upgrade the internal drive in mine but haven’t had the extra time to tackle it.
Great video! I am thinking of buying a 21.5 inch 2013 imac with slightly better specs off of ebay for photo/video editing and light gaming occasionally.
Dude trust me on this... Upgrade hard drive to SSD. I recently did this to my aging 2013 21inch base model iMac and it made it a LOT faster. Video editing was surprisingly good on Final Cut Pro and boot times are incredible. Definitely would buy older iMac for this reason alone. A 1TB Sandisk SSD was only $130 and the DIY replacement process was not too difficult at all.
Enrique Lopez Hi I was wondering if you could suggest a what year and spec iMac to buy? All I need it for is basic video editing for my products on my Etsy shop and general use. My Budget is as cheap as possible but still being able to render in a reasonable time. Appreciate any help 🤟🏼
I just bought my iMac 27" 2013 this month for only PHP19000 or $328.00 and loving every moment I use it! For now I'm just saving money for ssd and ram upgrades. 😊
Just purchased for $510: late 2013 iMac 27” 3.5ghz, , 1tb hdd, 16gb ram, and (MOST importantly) the GTX 780m 4gb gpu - this gpu scored higher Unigine Heaven benchmarks than all MacBooks up to the 2019 15” (560x), and surprisingly even beat out the 2015 5k 27” iMac (m395x). For another ~$150, upgraded to 32gb ram and 1tb NVMe ssd, while holding the 1tb hdd as a secondary internal drive. Cannot stress how much of a difference the gpu with 4gb ram makes. 4K video editing and Fortnite run BUTTERY 🧈 smooth! Altogether, for under ~$650!
I'm looking for the same. Even with a $600 budget I haven't found one with the 4g v card yet. Did you find yours on Ebay or locally on Facebook or craigslist?
@@tedc6694 craigslist, here in los angeles. It was originally listed at $800 and I haggled, while providing a couple youtube videos done by Luke Miani and Eevnos -- I explained how both youtubers had purchased the same used iMacs for $600 or less. You should also mention that Eevnos' video is a couple years old now, so your buy price should be lower. Just remember, the mechanical HDD is outdated and replacing it with any type of SSD (even SATA) will make a noticeable difference. Goodluck Ted
I'm about to trade one of my guitars (AIO SC77 Custom) for a 2013 27" iMac tomorrow...super pumped! My 2010 27" iMac finally died so I had to replace her. I was worried about the HDD but this video gave me hope lol, thanks!
And you could also use an external ssd drive for your boot drive if you want speed using the thunderbolt connection if you don’t want to open the screen to install an ssd drive, although I would still do so personally. The truth is the older machines are really powerful as in fast once you have an ssd drive installed because ssd drives have their own cpu processors onboard. My question is, is the graphic card metal API. Because if so then the machine is a win win I my opinion.
lol, we must have the same taste. I have the 2013 27" Non-retina iMac 23.5ghz i7, 32g ram, 3Tb FusionDrive w/128 SSD. Had this machine for 5 years now, love it. Next year, I'm thinking of upgrading the storage to a full 1TB SSD and the graphic card to a 4Gb ram
Dude nowadays people tend to go to perfect displays but 5k is not that highly required to perform at best I mean even if you want to deal with an 8k footage and ur machine is a low one such yours you can go ahead and use proxies in premiere, or lower the ratio in after effects then render the sequence, however waiting for it will be exhausting but its okay for many people as long as you don't encounter lagging when editing. I hope my idea is clear. 😊
Thank you! At this point, I wouldn’t recommend this machine for Adobe applications. Not only are the CPU and GPU pretty old at this point, but Apple has since dropped support for this machine in their latest OS. I would recommend looking at a 2014 or 2015 model instead.
Who knows....clowning around with or something....it’s just the iMac...no power cord, mouse or keyboard....I have all of that from my old one....I’ll let you know how it goes
Update...I had to get the plug from Amazon....I have to use a corded keyboard and mouse before I go wireless!! I can not see the crack...it’s very small! It powers up and it’s ready to get online
Does an SSD makes a difference if you never cut your iMac off? And does it make sense to go with an older iMac over a new one if you’re only going to do basic stuff like web browsing, watching movies, emails, social media,UA-cam,writing,listening to music, light photo editing, and very light gaming? I have an iPad already but I wouldn’t mind a bigger screen. And the ability to do light gaming on steam.
An SSD will make a big difference in all day to day operations. Not sure quite what you mean about but cutting your iMac off, maybe you could clarify a bit for me. To answer your main question, yes an older iMac make sense for everything you mentioned there with the exception of gaming. Even some basic steam games can struggle on some of these older iMacs. If some light steam games are important to you, I would look for something that’s more on the recent side with dedicated graphics.
TechYoSelf What I meant about cutting the iMac off is that I always put my computers to sleep. I never shut them down. So the boot time wouldn’t matter. I knew ssd made a big difference in stuff like video editing. But I didn’t know if it made a difference in stuff like web browsing. Since I’ve never used an ssd before. Thanks for answering my question.
Oh gotcha, yeah it will make a huge difference even in basic stuff like web browsing/email/office productivity and stuff like that. Glad I could help! Happy Holidays!
Dude trust me on this... Upgrade hard drive to SSD. I recently did this to my aging 2013 21inch base model iMac and it made it a LOT faster. We are just looking at maybe picking up this same model Imac used for about 500 bucks straya dollerydoos and wanting to know would this edit 4k video? or just 1080p smoothly? Thanks very much.
I'm sure with a decent amount of RAM and an SSD, this machine would be able to handle a basic 4K timeline. It would really depend on your bitrate and video codec. The SSD upgrade would be extremely important as the mechanical hard drives that come in these machines are way to slow to handle it. In my personal opinion, if you plan on editing a lot of 4k video, you would be best off looking at something a bit newer with a better graphics card. Especially if you plan on editing longer timelines, adding effects, or doing color correction.
Thank you, might upgrade the pc instead and get a nvme drive maybe, I just know my current pc can’t do it even with a normal ssd and 16 gigs of ram 4 core i7.
Found a used 27'' iMac from late 2013 for 500 bucks. Do you reckon it's a good deal? Specs: 3,2 GHz Quad-Core Intel i5 8 GB 1600 MHz DDR3 NVIDIA GeForce GTX 675MX 1 GB 1 TB hdd
Wondering if anyone can help me??? I need a iMac for basic video editing for products that I sell on my Etsy shop. Any suggestions what year or spec to buy I’m very confused 😂
TechYoSelf thank you for getting back to me so quick ! All of our footage is shot on iPhone 8 and the videos are for our social media accounts so mostly 60 seconds the odd one at 3min max . Preferably 21.5” I’ve had no experience with upgrading tech but I’m not against having a go :)
My suggestion would be to get one that is from 2015 or newer. Also make sure you have at least 8 gigs of RAM and an SSD if possible. You will want to stay away from the ones that have traditional hard drives, they are borderline unusable. Upgrades on iMacs aren’t very easy, so you will want to get one that’s already ready to go. Hopefully that helps a little, if you have any more questions let me know! :)
No shame. Just ordred this: late 2013 27" 16gb ram 1 tb ssd and with GTX 780M 4 GB this replace my old refurbished 2011 27" 1 tb ssd that replaced my midt 2013 21,5"

I just bought my iMac 27" 2013 this month for only PHP19000 or $328.00 and loving every moment I use it! For now I'm just saving money for ssd and ram upgrades. 😊
I did something similar, and completely agree it's good value for the money!

Yes don't pull ur screen to upgrade the drive . The 32 ram does the job .. and i just got the mac os BIG SUR running on it .

That’s actually what I ended up doing, just booting from an external SSD. It’s more of a spare machine at this point so it works out great.
lol, we must have the same taste.
That’s quite the project, I’m excited to hear how it goes! I’ve been thinking about upgrading to an SSD myself pretty soon.
Can use for editing 4k video?...u still use it till now?
Aaaah... some good old smooth elevator jazz.
Edit: but does it run pubg mobile?
Hmm that’s a good question, but an even better question: will pubg mobile run the iMac....?
TechYoSelf xD

Got one today for 150 .. with a hair lime crack on the right side lcd. You can't even see it wen its on lol
Is this iMac still relevant to edit 4K videos for UA-cam in your opinion?
Great video man!!! Do all the Adobe softwares run smoothly and effortlessly? Preferably premier pro illustrator and Lightroom?

@@simple_networks it's a 2.7 GHz Quad Core i5 with the Intel turbo boost up to 3.2GHz and a 512GB SSD in it. Would it still be useable and good?
Hello, do you think a 2013 imac 27" with i5 500gb ssd and 32gb ram will work to edit photos on photoshop ?
@Frankly Speaking and for video editing on 1080p but full of effects and titles ?
I just got one today....there’s a tiny crack on it...but, for cutting video...it’s cool...$274 was the price...with shipping
Wow, that's a great deal! I'm always puzzled by how people manage to crack or damage their iMacs though, they just stay on your desk! :)

Specs:
3,2 GHz Quad-Core Intel i5
8 GB 1600 MHz DDR3
NVIDIA GeForce GTX 675MX 1 GB
1 TB hdd
I would say so, that’s pretty similar to mine and I payed around 550 for it.
great video! I also have a imac2013. I just curious about your keyboard. which type is it? and can I us apple magic keyboard 2 on it?
Mine is the old wired magic keyboard. I haven’t tested it but I believe the newer one should work as well.
TechYoSelf thanks for your reply. I just checked the Apple website and it says that magic keyboard doesn’t support iMac 2013😭😭
Does this year have iMovie? I have a 2013 IPad that won’t let me down iMovie
It will run older versions of iMovie, but will not run the newest version as it no longer supports the latest edition of MacOS.

my 2012 MacBook Pro runs Catalina just fine
