Damn! I forgot to skip the video! I love “what’s in my bag” videos, it’s interesting to see what others use and this one was no exception. Thanks for taking the time to post Nick, ignore the “haters”!!!
Any reason(s) for switching from the Acratech ball head to RRS? Asking b/c I’ve been really impressed with the Acratech leveling base, and have been considering picking up one of their ball heads as well.
I had a couple bad drops... one killed a camera (dropped in a river) The locking lever on the Acratech began to not lock anymore, which lead to me taking off walking with the camera still on the tripod... then falling off. The lever system is great when it works, but not so great when it doesn' lock anymore. I also didn't love how much force it took to lock it down tight. I liked the weight and look.. just not the locking down power, or the lever lock system durability
Nick Page Mercy...that sounds awful. It looks like such a unique tripod head, but not at the cost of breaking equipment or usability issues. Thanks so much for the response Nick - I think you just saved me quite a bit of money!
I bought the NRS Socks based on your advice from one of your earlier videos. I wear them as socks when I know I'm crossing streams or rivers. If I have a choice between going across slippery rocks, slippery wooden bridges or logs I don't choose any of them. I prefer to walk straight across the water using my poles and NRS socks. Its better to get wet than it is to break a leg all alone in the mountains or forest. With the NRS socks, my boots get wet, but my feet stay dry. The socks do smell after a day of hiking though. Great video.
Hello Nick Page..How do you like the Sony 16 -35 for Astrophotography? Chroma at its widest?? Also when you purchased your bag did you purchase the inserts separately or did you get one of the "bag and insert sets" that they sell? Appreciate your time....Thanks..Helen
Picked up some useful tips. Thanks for updating your gear. While I am still using F-stop and Canon, those socks and gloves are going to be an addition to my gear. As always, I I learn something new every time I watch your videos.
Do you use RRS BH-40 with Sony 100-400mm? I'm planning on investing in a ballhead and I'm deciding between BH-40 and BH-55. Largest lens which I would ever use would be 70-200mm f/2.8 and I'm wondering if BH-40 would manage to hold that lens still in all possible scenarios.
Nice video Nick. Thanks for the shout out about the gloves. I’ve been looking for some and those look like what I’m needing and will be checking them out. Thanks for the link. As for the exposure blending, if you haven’t shown your post workflow, would you consider a quick video tutorial? I’m not big into PS and would prefer to just use LR but would appreciate any tips. Cheers!
Check out some store near you that sells fishing equipment (or online store). They usually have a selection of those kind of gloves (cheap) if you don't need the exact model that Nick has.
Found your choice of gear interesting, even though I don’t use Sony gear, there were some great choices and reasons for some of the other accessories you use. Thanks for sharing. Love your photography.
I also bought the Maxpedition Micro Pouch after seeing Peter's video. I've already made use of it on a job! I decided to throw in some band-aids and sure enough, I pinched my finger so badly on a door while on a real estate shoot. It started bleeding and instead of letting it bleed all over the place (or constantly sucking on it like an idiot) in front of the client, I whipped out one of my band-aids from the pouch. Thanks, Peter! :) It's the little things.
I still own and think its a great little tripod if saving weight is a premium. Not my first choice for stability but when I dont want to pack a heavy tripod.. its great
I’m in quite a hole right debating between the two. FLM quality is top notch but Feisol can be extended a little taller. What ballhead would you recommend on these two?
I think you want something larger than the cb 26 for your main tripod... and while alot of people like the fiesol, I have had too many issues with them to feel good about recommending them. Check out this tripod from the Colorado tripod company. Same people as breakthrough photography filters.. and really great gear at a great price. coloradotripod.com/products/centennial-tripod
Nick, thanks for a great video. Especially appreciate the links. Just ordered gloves for this winter, and my water socks for Out of Oregon in the fall!! G
to stack you either need to mount a square filter over the top with the drop in system.. or use one of their "dark CPL's" which come in 3 or 6 stops. I never have a use case for that though
I'm in the market for a new bag so it's nice to see what working outdoor photographer chooses to use. Thanks for a great video. If I go with a Shimoda I'll use your link.
Does the 100-400 foot replacement have a bigger gap than the original? I find it a bit of a squeeze to fit my hand in nicely the way I hold the lens with the original foot.
Have a few questions if you were inclined to answer. What's the weight on that tripod and ball-head setup? Just curious. I tend to go between a 1.1Kg super light tripod and a 2.1Kg (2 if I use the shorter center column) big beefy setup. The 24-105 F4, thoughts (I looked to see if you had a video)? I have a Sony 24-240 that I bought for travel and hiking in 2015. It works well, but I have wondered whether the 24-105 would pair better with since I upgraded to 42.5MP. If it has better detail - I could effectively crop to zoom. Also is the 18mm your only prime? Suprised you don't have a macro.
Our bags are almost exactly the same (Love Sony). Just a question, I love my Valleret gloves and the new mitts, but I think the zipper on the mitts should open and close in the opposite direction for ease of use. Before I make that suggestion to them, think about it and tell me what your thoughts are. (Please?)
Great gear video! I’m always interested in what toys you have. I am intrigued by the magnetic filter system and looked on your link but can’t find the filter holder, only the filters. Was the holder a different company? Owning no system yet I would like to invest in the magnetic one since it makes a whole lot of sense.
Did you know: silica packets don't have an infinite capacity to absorb moisture but drying them out is not difficult. You can put them in the microwave! It takes about 30-60 seconds to heat the trapped moisture and release it. Then you will want to immediately place them into a sealed bag to keep them from absorbing moisture until you need them.
Nice video Nick! I definitely share you sentiments about grad filters. The only time I use them is for timelapses (if they're needed) since you can't really fix that it post as easily, and I hate doing HDR timelapses. The weight and space savings for not using big square filters is also a big plus for me, and I'd much rather bracket and blend in post without the degradation from extra filters.
Awesome video! I was tempted by the devil to buy a graduated filter for Amazon Prime day and was able to resist. Of course, I'll still buy some more gear...
No this is just the tvc 24. I still have my 34 L which kind of takes the place is my big tall tripod this one is more about trying to keep it smaller and lighter for travel. If you’re going to only have one like most humans LOL I would recommend getting the 24 L because the extra height is very useful
@@NickPage Oh wow, that still looks pretty long folded. I've been using sirui travel sized tripods and looking to upgrade to a RRS tripod. And I was looking at either the 24L or 24, and if the 24 regular is that long, I might stray away from the 24L. But like you said, if you already have a long/tall tripod, it's nice to get the short tripod. In my case I have a shorter tripod, so maybe getting the 24L would be beneficial. Touch decisions, thanks for the response Nick!
@@NickPage I'll be very, very interested why is that so. Athlete gets stellar reviews and looks to tick all the boxes for mirrorless adventures. Any chance you'll release that review any time soon? I'm in the market for a backpack :)
I actually have the bigger pack not the athlete. The main thing is comfort that’s really the only thing I hold against the bag it has a lot of clever features but it’s just not nearly as comfortable
@@NickPage I did not consider Atlas Adventurer. Too big for my mirrorless system. And all other regular photo bags like Shimoda, Mindshift are way too boxy and hardly change even with a minimal amount of equipment. Atlas seems to beat everyone else in that regard. F-Stop has bad fame recently, plus reviewers tend to prefer Shimoda... If it wasn't for the shipping and taxes here in EU, I think I would be happy Athlete owner already. Yet, I might end up with a regular hiking pack like Mammut Trion 35 or Gregory Targhee 32 and camera insert and save $$$. Choices, choices....
juppiel I would think that the Shimoda 30 would fit your needs. I see what you’re saying about the Boxee look but you have to keep in mind there most of the time when you see that it’s because they are stuffed full they actually are quite slack and pliable were not filled to the brim with stuff
The X4 is made out of better materials, they’re worth the extra money because of the coatings and brass ring.. Typically a three stop 10 stop and a circular polarizer are my go to set up
Man I don't know what system to invest in. I want to upgrade from my g7 as I've moved more towards photography.. The a6400 sure seems appealing but a lot are screaming fuji at me. Maybe a used a7ii. Anytime able to chime in with some pointers or cameras?
It’s pretty tough. When investing in Sony you have to account for the more expensive lenses. When investing in Fuji do you have to be prepared for lower image quality. What do you shoot the most of? And what is your budget
Great video Nick, Thank you! Quick question, how do you like the 24-105 G? I have the 24-70 GM but the extra reach would be great. Considering selling and buying the 24-105 G.
Don't do that. I own 24-70 GM and went to a local shop to test it against 24-105 G. Side by side comparison showed full disappointment in 24-105. However what would you expect for $1k less..
Nick is there anything regarding Sony color science difference people talk about? Second don’t you feel Sony more like toy like or computer feel then a real camera feel with canon or Nikon?
Its different, but you get used to it. No i dont feel like its a toy at all, just smaller and lighter than a DSLR. I miss some things about my old canon, but the size isn't one of them!
Nick Page are Sony colors inferior compared to canon? I mean do you need to correct the colors in post processing? I have heard people online complaining about it online. Thanks for your time...stay safe and keep creating beautiful pictures ....appreciate it ...
Muhammad Asi The green channel is a little stronger in the red channel a little weaker with Sony colors but that is it, I have no issues at all getting the look I want. People that complain don’t know what they’re talking about or don’t know how to post process
I love the water proof socks Nick, but do you wear a wading boot? That way you are not sitting with a bunch of water in a regular boot! I know Cabela’s has some good ones for fly fishing. I’m not talking about muck boots though lol
I bring either a pair of sandals, or a lightweight mesh shoe to wear over them, that way they dont get heavy and take forever to dry out.. and I can either hike in with my hiking boots, and hike back out with nice dry boots, or just wear the tennisshoes during the hike.. sometimes I just wear them all day.
I love all of your videos. I believe you mentioned moving from the RRS TVC-34L to the RRS TVC-24. Is that correct? If so, do you miss the extra height of the L version or do you find the shorter version more than adequate?
Well I still own the 34L, so I still use it, but mostly when I know that I will be needing a big tripod, or if I am working close to the car. There are plenty of times that extra height comes in handy for sure, but when I am hiking or flying.. that smaller tripod is soooo nice
@@NickPage that was a quick response. I have a 24L and the TQC-14. I don't see myself ever flying with the 24L, but like having it in the car much like your 34L tripod. I am just wondering if the standard 24 would suffice for everything or if I would miss the height of the L version tripod.
I too love your videos. I also purchased couple of your video courses. They are wonderful! I'd love to do an Oregon trip with you. I've been thinking about making the switch from Canon 5D III to Sony A7R III. Question: Did you sell your Canon gear? If so, did you go private party or what? Thanks again.
Thank you for the great video! Is it okay to carry a tripod on a side of backpack? I understand that it is the most convenient way, but it makes the backpack unbalanced and for a short trip it is acceptable, but after a few day hiking, your back may start to feel bad).
agreed if I was going on long long hikes over 5 miles it could get annoying maybe, but there are other ways to mount the tripod in those cases, on the back or even on the top if need be. but it doesn't bother me too much on the side
Nick Page I rarely use then but have them “just in case” kinda thing. I bracket before I even remember I have them lol. That will help lighten my bag a little
Really enjoyed your "What's in my bag" video, Nick. I especially appreciated seeing some of your accessories like the mag filters, SD card wallets, RRS tripod and just gear in general. Man, you've got more than a chunk of change in that pack. It is nice to see what diff photogs carry in their bag of tricks and I know I'll be buying some of your suggestions. Good video. That being said, I found your background music a little distracting. At first, I looked to turn down my radio, then realized I couldn't turn down your music overlay. Ha!
Yeah, I always feel a little guilty when I show just how much money I have dumped into my gear, but I guess since its what I do.. thats my excuse. When its both your hobby, your love, and your job, you tend to pour allot back into the gear that allows you to do what you do.
I moved from LEE to Breakthrough screw ins ones 18 months ago and live them but i've recently brought some of their magnetic ones and found them very dissapointing. the idea is sound but the reality does not live up to the hope - i've found no lens cap or cover that fits over the magnetic adapter, so you have to take the adapter on and off each time, which negates the quick and ease of use idea. Lee filters have good white caps so you can leave the adapters on the lens most of the time. you cant do that with Breakthrough, which fo the magnetic adapters makes them pretty useless.
I know it's been six months or since your move to Sony but congrats on the switch. I just made the move and your using one of my main landscape lenses to vlog!
Nick Page I think the community needs to see that conversation. I have been watching Thomas and Gavin for a while. (The Yorkshireman missing Home I guess). Just found your Channel and awesome. Binge watched a lot passed few days.
Nick Page 😂😂. Well back to work tomorrow so a rest from UA-cam but will catch up soon. You have a great mix of out on scene, tutorials, and live chats. For me a mix what some others are missing. Well done
Hey Nick ! I have jumped ship to sony also (lost all my canon gear to a flood in Indonesia ) have purchased an a7r iii Do you use Sony batteries or third party?
The thing about a video like this is that you travel alot, so do I, internationally. I often wonder, do I have everything I need or too much? Also, packing smart and most importantly **ergonomically** is important for some of us and that begins with a good bag. Thankyou!
Love your setup Nick! Out of curiosity how much does your pack weigh and do you have problems with carry on luggage when flying? Got an Osmo Pocket recently too and it’s a great little device. With the microphone you have what’s the range in distance from the camera you can reasonably be from it. Want to make the move to a Sony A7 iii this year and this video had me really excited! I totally agree with you on exposure blending too! So much more control! Keep up the good work. Sorry to throw a million questions at you haha! Keep up the great work!
Well if you look through all my videos they’re pretty much all taken with that Mike on top. I try to stay within 5 feet otherwise you enter his voiceover territory
Nick Page Thanks for getting back to me. I’m looking at the Rode Video Mic Pro + but the Video Mic Go looks so much more portable and will do the job just fine. Thanks for your reply ! Long time fan, you inspired me to get into exposure blending way back and I haven’t looked back since!
Michael Patterson My favorite part of the video micro is the fact that it does not require batteries because nothing sucks more than having a battery die in the middle of a long clip or forgetting to bring a battery that is charged. The less variables and moving parts you have as well as the last batteries you have to remember to charge the better
Nick Page That’s a fair point. Use the KISS rule. I could image no audio isn’t the desired result after a day of hiking. I think you’ve convinced me! Thanks for your help.
Great video and thanks for the links! Are you still using some canon lenses with your Sony or did you sell them all? Do you like the Sony lenses better?
I started off trying to convert all of my old lenses but because I’m doing video and auto focus is a premium I ended up going all native lenses I certainly don’t regret it the lenses are great and I save weight with them
Any place that has high humidity, having those packets helps keep your gear from getting too much moisture. I buy the larger packets from amazon to keep my gear safe.
I have the Atlas Athlete pack and I'm really enjoying that the bag can become completely different sizes. I may get a Shimoda bag as well for certain setups but no matter how little or how much stuff is in those the bags are always the same size. I can make the Atlas bag a 20l bag or a 40l bag which is awesome. That's the big selling point for me. Not a fan of the Adventure pack though and how the straps are on the panel instead of the bag. That seems to me to be a failure point. Athlete is better designed, in my opinion.
Cool, thanks. I am considering the Athlete as well. I typically want to carry as little as possible so I don't want a 60L bag at this point, but having some flexibility between 20 and 40L in the same bag is intriguing.
I'm thinking of saying goodbye to Nikon after 35 years, you have two lenses I think I would buy, the 16-35 f2.8 and the 100-400 "G"master I'm guessing you have no regreats switching from Canon? Cheers man.
Great video Nick. Hey that tripod I'm in the market for a nice new tripod. I was considering the PMG tripod but what are your thoughts between these two tripods also I will be using for Real estate so do they make rubber feet and spikes for that tripod?.
yeah the RRS comes with the rubber feet, the rock grabbers are an add on. I havn't used the Pro Media tripods so I can really speak from knowledge about them. But now that I have RRS stuff, i cant really imagine using anything else
Nick Minderman - I have the Pro Media tripod and it's every bit as well machined and built as the RRS tripods. For me the decision to go PMG went down to a few things - the 34L is lighter and gets much higher than the comparable RRS offerings and I like the attachment points on the collar. The built in spikes that come with it are a very nice bonus point. Either way you will be happy, just figure out the sizing and features you want. Both companies make very well made tripods.
Thomas heaton ,jimmy Mcintyre, Simon Baxtor, EliaLocardi ,Jay and Verona Patel, I could go on and on and on all these photographers have videos of them using graduated filter some even have videos showing how to use them correctly I guess they are wrong in using them? just a question
it has to be a "perfect' use case, otherwise they create artifacts. over dark objects breaking over the horizion.. over dark water deeper in to the frame. I am quite surprised that Jimmy would use them as he is an excellent post processor. I am headed to hawaii and I will be bring a 2 stop soft, but I doubt I will use it because even in seascapes you can often get more natural results exposure blending than using a grad. They arn't wrong, because there is no right or wrong way. I just very very much would rather exposure blend and have 100% control than do the best I can with a drop in filter.
Hello Nick, I enjoyed this very much. If! ... I had the money I could be tempted by the Sony set up! But alas that is not going to happen unless I win the lottery lol
Hey Nick really been enjoying the videos! Just picked up a full size tripod and the past few outings i've been shoving it in my "waterbottle" pocket (which positions the tripod higher on my pack than I'd like). I've maybe seen in a few of your videos, a sort of pouch that hangs off your pack that the legs of your tripod sit in. Sort of like a Koozie for the feet of your tripod which effectively lowers the position of the tripod on the pack. Do you have any gear/product recommendations for me? Thanks!
@@NickPage I am using the LowPro Flipside. It has a two compression straps per side so I am thinking that I may be able to hang a "pouch" of sorts so that the legs can hang lower than the bottom of the water bottle pocket.
@@georgecannon151 I can’t think of anything that would work off the top of my head, I have an old flipside, and never really liked how tripods mounted to it

Awesome video! I was tempted by the devil to buy a graduated filter for Amazon Prime day and was able to resist. Of course, I'll still buy some more gear...
Is that tripod the rrs tvc 24L? You said and linked the Tvc 24 in the description. I'm trying to decide on the 24L or 24.
Nick, have you considered Atlas backpacks? I wonder how eg. Athlete stacks up against 40L Shimoda.
I have one that I’ve been planning to release a review on for a while. But suffice it to say my recommendation is still Shimoda
Love your vids Nick, have watched all of them multiple times! You are an amazing photographer. You take spectacular photos!
Which ICU was that?
i did not see any 1 stop or two stop filters mentioned in the video. do you not use them?
What is your recommendation for filter? Looking at a 10stop, 6stop, and cpl from breakthrough. Back and forth btw x2 and x4
ScrattleGG I’m Fuji convert from Nikon. I own xt1, 2 and the xh1 plus 10 lenses. I also own the 50r medium format also Fuji. Best camera company EVER.
Interesting collection of stuff, but I noticed that you got one of these new titanium ballheads - any comment on it yet?
I love my shimoda 60. Such an awesome backpack. Did you consider fuji when leaving cannon? Why Sony Nick? 😊😊
Does the Breakthrough mag filter setup vignette on the 16-35 GM?
Yes a tiny bit at 16mm gone by 17mm
I too love your videos. I also purchased couple of your video courses. They are wonderful! I'd love to do an Oregon trip with you. I've been thinking about making the switch from Canon 5D III to Sony A7R III. Question: Did you sell your Canon gear? If so, did you go private party or what? Thanks again.
Liking those socks ...lots of great stuff I will check into...thanks for the info...appreciated
Curious why you chose to go with the shorter 24 legs over the 24L? I take it you were valuing weight savings over height?
Because I already had the 34L I wanted to make this one my light tripod so I went with the shorter legs and lighter ball head
Great video! I have been debating carrying GND filters for a while and you just helped me make my decision.
I mean.. they are great if you really hate post processing, but it just doesn't fit my way of shooting
Nick Page I rarely use then but have them “just in case” kinda thing. I bracket before I even remember I have them lol. That will help lighten my bag a little
@@tammymellertphoto yeah I have a set as well, and they just sit on the shelf
Any day you get new gear is a good day. :)
@@NickPage Well, Nick, when it's your trade, you gotta have the right tools.
Interesting video Nick, just another question what's in the first aid kit ?
I know it's been six months or since your move to Sony but congrats on the switch. I just made the move and your using one of my main landscape lenses to vlog!
yeah that batis is great! I love it for astro, tack freaking sharp
Dude...I must be missed the video where you switched to Sony? That's awesome bro!
Nick! This isn't gear but it sure helps when you're on the trail. 1. Toilet paper (biodegradable). 2. Advil/Tylenol. 3. Dental floss. 4. Bandages.
Think i may ask Thomas Heaton the same question. Does he know your thoughs on Grad Filters? Have you had many debates on them?
oh he knows.... he knows :)
Nick Page I think the community needs to see that conversation. I have been watching Thomas and Gavin for a while. (The Yorkshireman missing Home I guess). Just found your Channel and awesome. Binge watched a lot passed few days.
Martin Hoyle I appreciate the kind words. Careful not to much too much a person can only handle so much Nick Page in one week LOL
Have you tried the Atlas packs?
I have. I have the Explorer here for review. While I like alot of the features, its nothing to become my main bag
Wink back at him! so cute! 😆
That Columbia hat is boss!
Is there a reason you dont use lens hoods?
Mostly just laziness honestly. They don’t do much on the wide lenses I use it on my tele though
I'm thinking of saying goodbye to Nikon after 35 years, you have two lenses I think I would buy, the 16-35 f2.8 and the 100-400 "G"master I'm guessing you have no regreats switching from Canon? Cheers man.
When you get really remote, you should think about carrying an emergency locator beacon .
A MUST!
Nick, love your work! I bet you're in love with all the upcoming firmware updates for the a9 and a7riii announced yesterday. Definitely unexpected!
yeah! some great stuff seems to be coming via firmware
I just very very much would rather exposure blend and have 100% control than do the best I can with a drop in filter.
when I go to the farroes on your workshop I'm hoping to do a lot of exposer blending @@NickPage
Love it Nick
I would love to switch to Sony
Maybe in the far away future lol
Hello Nick, I enjoyed this very much. If! ... I had the money I could be tempted by the Sony set up! But alas that is not going to happen unless I win the lottery lol
What do you think of A9 in 2021? vs A9 vs A1?
Still a great camera... the A1 blows it away in most regards, but its still a great camera, which I still own for wildlife
@@NickPage thank you
That’s a cool video! I added up well over 10k in gear. Hope you made a good payback for the Canon gear lol!
I noticed you first aid kid.. is that the bigger one? I saw one on REI for about 59.99
Hey Nick really been enjoying the videos!
Thanks!
which bag are you using?
@@NickPage I am using the LowPro Flipside. It has a two compression straps per side so I am thinking that I may be able to hang a "pouch" of sorts so that the legs can hang lower than the bottom of the water bottle pocket.
@@georgecannon151 I can’t think of anything that would work off the top of my head, I have an old flipside, and never really liked how tripods mounted to it
@@NickPage No worries thanks for reaching back out! I'm sure I'll rig something up until the next best bag comes around hahaha. Thanks!
Loooved the video. Except I shoot fuji and Fuji medium format and my Mavic pro. I use a 39.95 amazon basic camera backpack that is now six years old and I’ve taken it all over the world. Thiiiiirty nine, 95...
